Aggression plays a major role in outdoor sports however how aggression manifests can have a profound impact on athletes especially in the outdoors. In this video we're looking at how aggression manifests and why specifically hostile aggression can manifest. This is unique from instrumental aggression which is targeted for a non-hostile purpose. Not only does aggression in sports play out negatively in the outdoors, but it has a strong correlation to the rest of our lives. so how can outdoor athletes manage their aggression and is there a healthy kind of aggression?

Trevor this topic is an excellent topic and really fits my boating perception of how risk is balanced with our perception of skill. I certainly experienced this out on Tobin this year as our team had reality handed to us after missing our line and flipped. That balance of anxiety and fear driving confidence and motivation are a big part of how I balance (or Over estimate) my skills . I really love the exploration of evidence. The mental health aspect of adventurous outdoor sports has as a person who works outside the industry and boats as recreational boat driven me to crave more. I definitely come away from rafting a challenging run or new run to me with a excitement for life a d brings me away from my daily stressors. I think you would like the work by Allen et al. (2020) on the mental benefits of high adventure sports on mental health. The balance of adding more outdoor experiences with the balance of Risk is also explored some but more evidence and research is needed. Thank you for sharing your work on this subject and really exposing some foundational concepts why we do this amazing sport. Thanks again Eric

Speaking as a perfectionist with an imperfect body, and mind. I often have unrealistic expectations. The subjective outcome is far from the objective reality. This is manifested by frustration, sometimes masked as anger. The positive aspect of this type of personality is that we will always strive to be better. Even at things that don't matter to most. Like throwing a throw bag. But chill. I don't think anyone would describe me as chill. Although, we mellow with age. 😉 I look forward to your next video.

Trevor I like this thread, and haven't heard anyone talk about this in the context of rafting. It's very thought provoking, and im glad you brought it up. Thanks!

Absolutely Sean. It's part of being in the outdoors and it certainly comes up a lot in boating. Aggression can be super toxic if it is not appropriately directed. It is all about finding the right way to express it and to channel it that makes the difference. It is certainly easier as we age an become more confident in our skills, but it can be tough to dig deep and understand the internal mechanism by which each person expresses aggression in the outdoors. Glad you liked the piece. Thanks for checking it out and more to come on this for sure!
