In terms of the environmental carbon footprint of artificial intelligence underscores a broader issue: the stark contrast between the luxurious lifestyles of the wealthy and the daily struggles of the poor. This disparity is as striking as comparing the conveniences of modern life to the hardships of the Stone Age. Since humans inevitably “waste” energy in their daily activities, the critical question is not whether energy use can be eliminated but how its environmental impact can be measured and mitigated. The fundamental truth remains: humanity’s survival depends on a sustainable Earth far more than the Earth depends on humanity. The focus, therefore, must shift toward responsible resource management and minimising harm. Exploring mature energy solutions, such as nuclear or hydrogen power, while addressing challenges like waste storage, is essential to striking a balance between technological progress and planetary health.

If the AI creator is operating from a moral perspective, then we get an AI that contributes to human flourishing. Otherwise, we could be seeing the beginning of human distraction.
