Thanks for nice detailed discussion. Helped me much to understand what and why low-impedance in the modern chargers. ELE2 ... I see more components on the breadboard in front of the first transformer than what is shown on the schematic. I need build one for my livestock. Looking for web page with complete schematic and parts list. The diac trigger diode has only once connection on schematic. Does not show what else connects to. I do not know what those other unexplained components are for on the board.

Been trying to find out if I can use a 120v to 12 volt transformer to feed the ignition coil for my fence it will make it a 60 cycle pulce what do you think.

this video is technical - I would like a simplified explanation of how they work in layman's terms. For instance: Does the capacitor discharge totally every time the neon light blinks, or does it discharge only when and animal touches the fence and completes the circuit? If the circuit is completed when an animal touches the fence, then why can you measure a voltage on the ground rods all the time when nothing is touching the fence to complete the circuit? I ran a low-impedance charge for years to control livestock. Also did not basic repairs to get it back in operation. Yes the cap discharges every pulse as load is sent down the line. I suspect the neon light acts as a safety to help discharge if nothing connected. From what I read, some high voltage outputs can be damaged if load is not discharged. When the electric fence line is run some distance there is always some discharge with high voltage. Consider humidity, high voltage finding way to ground through air molecules. Also insulators not 100% perfect even though they appear to be on an ohm meter test. Dust and moisture collecting on insulators reduce effectiveness. Rain wet insulators especially makes circuit to ground. Hope that helps.

Excellent video. Perhaps you can help me out! I just recently got a bull dozer model#4612 (serial # 1245 785) in an ebay sale for a few bucks. The circuit board says 13 1985. (13th circuit produced in 1985?). It was listed "as is" so knew it wouldn't be working. I was hoping it would be a bad capacitor, however, that was not it. A transistor and what looks like a resistor burnt up. I searched online for schematics, but couldn't find any. You wouldn't happen to have one or any recommendations for what kind of transistor to put in it, would you? the circuit is very simple, there are only 11 components on the actual circuit board. The controller is a 6v/12v design, and I intend to use it with a solar panel and battery when I get it working.

How do you work out which transformer you need to replace a faulty one. All I have is the dimensions (31.5x37.5x46mm) and that there are 2 pairs of posts (19mm apart and 30mm apart) and there are numbers 1,2,3,...10 on the top . The energizer is 1.6J/12v. Many thanks anyone!?
