The only times Chimaev has looked human was against elite grapplers. Against Burns, a BJJ world champion, Khamzat could not dominate on the ground - it was a dangerous area and he had to bail on ground positions a few times because of submission threats. Against Usman, he had to spent a ton of energy wrestling, but he could also not get good bang for his bucks on the positions he gained. Usman is one hell of a wrestler and even though Chimaev had an edge in that department, it wasn't enough of an edge for him to close the show. Usman has been a dominant champ, and the fact that he didn't go through a grueling camp is maybe not the disadvantage that people think - when you have chronic issues (the way Usman does with his knees), being well rested can sometimes beat 3 months of grind in camp. Those were the only times Chimaev couldn't really impose his will in the wrestling department: against legit, highly credentialled grapplers who came up in a grappling sport, as in, not guys who learned grappling for MMA and got good at mixing things up, but specialists who will fight every detail of a grappling position. DDP is an enormously physical guy, very strong and powerful, but I'm not sure he is technical enough of a grappler to fight off Chimaev in grappling, and Strickland is known to be a competent grappler, but he is not a guy who is in love with grappling. DDP is a tough fight, but it could easily turn out to be a mauling. Strickland might be an easy fight style-wise. They have trained together, Chimaev will know what to expect in the stand up, the pressure and the looks. Strickland's deceptively basic approach to striking will not surprise Chimaev because he's already experienced it, and he isn't the kind of guy who will suddenly develop some unorthodox stuff to throw Chimaev off his game. Grappling-wise, Strickland admitted he got mauled, and that's not the kind of skill gap that can be bridged in a training camp, especially if you are like Sean and don't love grappling. If Strickland wins the title, I very much doubt he will sign on the dotted line because he knows he's getting whopped.

dricsu beats khamzat and he beats strickland. he is the real deal champion you will see. he is to much physicality and fight iq to lose to khamzat. now if khamzat had the same physicality as dricus then maybe khamzat could win but dricus is to strong and big for his wrestling to work against dricus like it does with everyone else. also gilbert burns beat khamzat i watched it back several times they robbed gilbert to allow khamzat to keep his undefeated record so the ufc can push it for views and revenue. same as how they robbed peter yan against sean o malley, peter clearly won the fight everyone saw it

Strickland was the fight pre Whitaker Chimaev. The Loss Strickland had was split and controversial and instead of a rematch that happens the majority of the time. Izzy got the fight. Sean is ranked #1 so I agree with Chael 100%. Chimaev vs winner of Strickland v Du Plessis. That finishes the business of the sport

DDP said that Khamzat hasn't seen power like his before and frankly I'd agree, DDP is huge at 185 while Chimaev has only just come up a weight class. I think dana white some time ago publicly said Strickland should be next for Dricus. Dricus admitted there is a real fight contract ( for Strickland) ,he just hasn't signed it. If Dricus is undecided maybe Strickland and khamzat should fight each other to force a contender. But would Dricus want to wait it out that long

Best option is Khamzat, if not, do Sean in January/February and Khamzat vs the winner in June/July. There's very close to 0% chance that Sean would accept a fight vs Khamzat that's not for the belt. He refused the Whittaker fight and insisted on waiting out for his title shot.

@ I agree. It showed vs Burns that he wanted no part of the jiu-jitsu game but Burns was an expert at it. And even if that’s the case he will let DDP up and just take him down almost at will in every round if it even goes the 5. They will both be exhausted and the only way I see Borz losing is if he gets rattled by a punch and finished. UFC history shows that takedowns, even if they are lame, are enough to win rounds if it goes to decision.

Strickland can’t win any of those 2 matches. If he goes in first against Dricus, we’ll never see him fight Chimaev. Dricus beats Strickland and Chimaev beats Dricus, so where is the logic here? The only slight uncertainty is the outcome of Dricus versus Chimaev, but Chimaev will clearly be the favorite. So if you really want to see Strickland fight Chimaev, the right thing to do is to give Chimaev an immediate shot at the belt, and let him fight Strickland right after.
