In this video, we deep dive into the math behind the Global Positioning System (GPS). Using simple ideas of geometry, we can accurately determine any location on Earth.
Mathematical thinking skills help us solve problems, and understand and see the world more clearly.

I have a quick question: Wouldn't 3 GPS satellites suffice to pinpoint your exact location on earth? Since you will always get two intersection points, one located on the face of the earth and one somewhere in outer space, couldn't we assume that we are located on the earth?
@MenacingPerson
@MenacingPerson Жыл бұрын
the GPS receiver cannot see the earth so it cannot know which of the two points is on the surface

Explanation in the video is wrong. The 4th sattelite is needed, because the other three distances cant be calculated without error. Thisxerror comes from the unknown sattelite time vs own unprecise timecreference

You are right. The 4th is needed for time synchronisation.

Thank you so much... In was just finding videos about GPS system but didn't find anything helpful content from them and then I see your video. As you use animation for better explanation; Now my doubt is clear . Again Thanks ❤❤

There's a mistake in your video. If you want to locate the point near the earth, 3 satellites is enough. Beacause one of the 2 points that calculated by 3 satellites is far away from earth, it can't be the results obviously. The reason why need 4 satellites at least is because besides 3 dimentional coordiations, another unknown one is "clock error" of the receiver. Just because the clock on the receivers can't use the atomic clocks like that on the satellites.

I suspect that not every GPS receiver has an atomic clock. How will it work then ? only from the time difference between the received times ?
@Michael75579
@Michael75579 Жыл бұрын
If the clock in your receiver is off (and it almost certainly will be as most receivers don't contain an atomic clock), the spheres won't intersect at a point. Going back to the 2D example because it's easier to visualise, the circles won't meet at a point but will form a "triangle" with three curved sides. The receiver can use this triangle to work out how much it needs to alter its clock so that the circles will meet at a point, then rerun the calculation with this new clock value.

No GPS receiver has atomic clock, It's GPS satellites that have atomic clock synced, GPS receiver simply receives signals from all these satellites and calculates differences in the received time from each satellite.

There were quite a few mistakes in the video. GPS device does not communicate with the satellites. It only keeps receiving. Before the GPS device can calculate distance from the satellites, it needs to sync its time with the time of the GPS satellites (it's clock can not maintain accurate time for too long). I was hoping you will show this math as it won't be easy. Also if you are using USA's GPS, you need to wait to see where the satellites actually are (unless you have downloaded assistance data not too long ago). Unlike for example Galileo, GPS does not have geo synchronous orbits. They keep sending their locations every now and then. That is why a cold start of GPS takes a longer time compared to warm start (the GPS device caches the locations for a short time). Final mistake is the minimum number of satellites, which is 3. But in this way you will get less precise 2D fix instead of a more precise 3D fix that requires 4 satellites.
@n00bATlarge
@n00bATlarge 4 ай бұрын
Nonsense. The 4th satellite is for time reference, as the clock in the phone or other receiver is not accurate enough to validate the signals coming from the other 3..
