In this episode of The MindHealth360 Show in conjunction with the How To Academy, distinguished Harvard psychiatrist and prolific researcher Dr Chris Palmer unveils his pioneering insights into how metabolic processes underpin mental disorders, challenging traditional psychiatric paradigms.
Dr Palmer leads the Metabolic and Mental Health Program and directs the Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education at McLean Hospital. He is also an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. His revolutionary work advocates for the medical ketogenic diet and a metabolic approach as a treatment for psychiatric disorders, proposing significant shifts in how we understand and treat mental illness.
Learn about:
- Dr Palmer's evidence-based theory that mental disorders - whether psychiatric or neurological - are metabolic diseases affecting the brain and involving dysfunctional metabolic processes which can be fixed
- The role of inflammation in metabolic dysfunction and its impact on mental health
- How mitochondria in the brain are not only the power houses of cells and mental energy production but also regulate neurotransmitter production, immune response and inflammation
- How enhancing mitochondrial function can dramatically improve mental and neurological health
- How trauma and stress affect mental health via their effects on metabolic health
- How ADHD and the phenomena of hyper-focus and distractibility can be explained in terms of metabolic activity in the brain
- How diet, and in particular low glycemic and ketogenic diets, can affect metabolism and mitochondria and dramatically improve outcomes in psychiatric and neurological patients, when traditional therapies often fall short
- The comprehensive strategies Dr Palmer recommends, encompassing dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, sleep hygiene, and nutritional supplementation to improve mitochondrial health, and therefore mental health

Great talk. B12 though - this is so essential to mitochondrial function and I feel it should be highlighted

Speaking of sleep deprivation, it’s 1:51am and I’m listening to this lecture. At least if I’m not sleeping I can learn something useful.

Bipolar and schizophrenia are mitocondrial dysfunction disorders as Chris would state. Bipolar happens and then it’s a “waiting” or “limbo” process for psychiatry to correct these issues when they can’t. Schizophrenia is a RESPONSE to untreatable bipolar, withdrawel, anhedonia and amotivation. Schizophrenia is trauma, dealing with the “intolerable self,” dealing with bipolar disorder or loss, marijuana, amphetamines, alcohol and being around poor enviorments. All affecting mitocondrial function in the brain and body overtime to create these disabling conditions in young adulthood…people need to connect the dots of mental health that are so obvious

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 2 at 16, I'm 23 now, and I recently had a second breakdown. It was way worse than my first breakdown. I was hearing voices(which never happened to me before), paranoid, in psychosis. I saw a video on KZbin of what it's like to have schizophrenia and it was exactly the same thing that was happening when I was in the hospital. So I'm hoping that a keto diet, regular sleep, and exercise and sunlight routine will fix my mitochondria dysfunction and hopefully it will eventually get me off my meds in time obviously with doctor supervision. But I just thought I would reply to your comment because it's very accurate to my story. Also, I got into marijuana use in my high school days, around 14, 15. What you mention about trauma and intolerable self is accurate to how I was mentally around those times as well(middle school and high school). and also around the time of my second breakdown, my dad passed away from a sudden heart attack and then after I had the second breakdown.

btw where did you get that information about bipolar being the waiting/limbo state and schizophrenia being a response to untreated bipolar, intolerable self etc. I never heard about that but I'd like to look into that stuff more.

@@notlrac123 I’m referring to myself. Schizophrenia was a reaction to the inability of me or psychiatry to treat the underlying bipolar negative symptoms. “The intolerable” self becomes about that I became an alcoholic or started to show mental health symptoms. It was intolerable to me that I of all people was dealing with this stuff so later down the line, with other environmental factors like abuses, sleep disturbances, marijuana and even domestic cat ownership lead to schizophrenia or psychotic like experiences I still live with today. Good luck to you on your journey
