For some reason people are having a hard time understanding the game. People can't seem to wrap their heads around not being guided and honestly, I kinda think it's a little sad. Anyways, I've compiled a list of everything I've heard about NMS so far and I'm going to share it in hopes that some people are less confused or in the dark about what NMS is or is about/consists of. -First things first. This is for *ps4*... for now. It is advertised as being for ps4, it is for the ps4. P...S...4! Yes, HelloGames does want to release for PC and other platforms, but right now it is for ps4, but not exclusively since they will most likely release it for multiple platforms sometime after the launch. -Infinite procedural universe (obviously lol) -Planets will be planet sized (Either all of them will be or some of the will be, I forget which). -According to Sean Murray, if he *had* to come up with a basic objective it would be to get to the center of the universe, but mainly the people at HelloGames want people to create their own experience. However, it seems traversing deeper into the universe will be a common thread amongst us all based on the way the game is set up. Obtainable things get better the deeper you go, but obstacles also become harder. -In order to complete the "basic" objective you'd obviously have to survive which brings us to the second objective... survival. Go figure lol. -You will have a "multi-tool" which you can upgrade based on your specific needs and the way you like to play. -Planets react to atmosphere... The amount of gases in the air will determine what color the sky, grass, water etc will be. If a planet is too close to it's respective sun it will de desolate (and probably desert like since that motherfucker will be hottt). Same goes for a planet too far from it's respective sun. Not all planets will be teeming with life like the one in the demo. -There will be enemies! This is not just a "oooohhhh, ahhhhhhh" kind of game. Yes you can -Explore and -Discover but there *will* be threats and people ( I should say aliens lol) that want you dead. Although, I haven't heard anything about the animal life being a threat. I think certain ones might be. Hopefully. -There will be AI beside animal life. Think back to the multiple ships flying through space, those are your companions. -Bringing us back to survival, you will have to gather resources in order to upgrade your ship and suit. And you *will* need to upgrade them in order to survive on certain terrain or, let's say you wanted to last longer underwater you can upgrade your suit to do so. -If you're cruisin' through space on your way to another planet and you decide to stop and fight these pirates in your way and lose... you lose everything. You won't just respawn with everything all good to go. You will be affected. It will fucking suck. Choose your battles people! (Now that I think about it, where the hell will we respawn if we're in space? Maybe a trading post? Which brings me to my next point...) -There will trading posts to, well, trade. Lol. - You can bounty hunt! (Excited for that) -While it will be incredibly hard to find friends (Look at it this way. The planets are planet sized. If I'm on one side of earth and friend is on the exact opposite side, it'd be kinda hard to get to each other. So now we're talking about a universe lol. Good luck!) There will be a multiplayer mode. It will either be in the future or immediately released. I'm praying for immediate because nothing is more badass than flying through space with friends and kicking pirate ass! Which brings me to my next point.. -This game will be in the works for a while. It won't release and that's it. I guess we can compare these to Minecraft TU's. Well, that's all folks! Hopefully this helps some of you out and if I've missed anything or got something wrong let me know :)

You know what I find incredible? It doesn't matter if this game ends up being good or not. The concept is public. The idea is out there. Just give it awhile, and eventually, this idea will be revolutionized by other developers. Procedurally generated open worlds, where the possibilities are dictated by nothing more than simple mathematics. Just think about it. This game, and possibly Star Citizen could influence a whole new era of gaming that is only but years away. That's why I'm optimistic. By all means, you can be happy for this game. But me personally, I'm happy for the future.

This concept has been around for over 20 years. Frontier: Elite II did this (to a much simpler level) in 1993, and is doing it again to a greater level of detail now, in Elite: Dangerous. Check out Infinity: The Quest For Earth too, similar concept, though it's been in development for a long time, and probably will be in development for many more years to come. Limit Theory is also doing something similar, though there won't be seamless planetary transitions. An Infinite, procedurally generated universe, with procedurally generated ships. You can build up fleets and factories and build your own empire (think X3).

***** I thought the same thing when NMS was ANNOUNCED back "then". I was hoping for a space exploration/trading shooter with the ability to land on planets (ffs, I could land on planets in elite: frontier in 1997). Then they started with all these features, animals, life, exploration on foot, looting, building and I realised that this is n't going to get released before 2020 or it will be released and will have all that but it will excel in none of the features because there are too many of them for them all to be good. Then I watched some more footage and press, and then hype started. Gamespot for instance is hyping this big time. I bet they made a deal to share sales profit but what do I know. This is gamespots XY video of this game, hyping it, and I know better than to trust any of this hype. Just remember colonial marines ffs.... edit: ok, A: Colonial Marines is a bit too obvious example, let's have a look at the brand new fascinating X: Rebirth. Yea, right. Luckily I knew all X games needed 5 patches to work so I waited, and I am still waiting but I didn;t buy it, and will not buy it, they ar enot fixing the game, they are making a DLC and expansion. So X died there. X3 is the last space game that is (still) good.

And if we can make games like No Man's Sky with only about 70 years of technology's evolution (computers), think about another thousand years of computing power increase, or a million or a billion. It's not that insane to assume we're in a simulation and just can't detect it, because it is far more complex computation than we have developed. Sort of like those little deer creatures in NMS having no idea they are in a video game. We can't possible comprehend the scale of how technology will advance. Our huge universe may be a quick speed round of Sim City to some super intelligent being (God). Simulation theory is nutty.

One thing that I never understood was how they store players' modifications on the environment. Sure, an algorithm can just re-generate and delete data of a specific location every time you load and unload that location, but what if a player digs into the ground? If you unload and reload that location, the hole would be gone, right? Or does the server save ONLY the data of player modifications and layers them on top of an algorithm's render? So then the location would be loaded from scratch using the algorithms, and then the tiny piece of information stored in the game save file or the server about the player's hole would be added onto the location. That's kind of a really damn smart optimization if I'm right about it.

For a future installment, I'd love to see natural selection determine how species evolve and which survive. The ability to tame certain animals depending on their breed, etc. Aside from animals, it would be really cool to have an ability to find rare elements or maybe even artifacts depending on the planet you find. The limits are endless.

the idea behind this is really great. think of it this way, in standard games everything is always there every pixel every MB which can build up to 20 even 40GB of data for games that only have 1 maybe 2 cities or areas to explore.... with this idea you can have much more places at any given time hidden with in mathematical algorithms... with this implemented into games as big as say WoW it could cut down its data size significantly, which will also cut down load times... sure it only loads when you get to that area but its only loading/generating for you... as for other people in the area it loads and generates that same data only for them. i live when indy developers think outside of the box and come up with something that can revolutionize the way we play games...

If I would have time and if I was not so overly hyped when I was done watching this video. I would write a long text telling everyone everything I love in this game. I've waited for this game, for so freaking long. Im amazed of what the universe. The laws of physics and all the planets, how they work and just how life was created in general. If this game fails. Im going to literary cry my self to sleep that day the message came to me. I don't want to wait another 15 years or something like that to see another game this great. Its literally the only thing I've been looking for in my gaming head. A open world space game where everything is almost like the real world. They are actually thinking of mathematic algorithms to make this game perfect. I will support this game to 100% and if this doesn't come to PC I will be so sad. But even then I'm going to probably buy a ps4 just to play this game. Please, PLEASE PLEASE do NOT fail this game. One thing I would love is if you went out of one planet you wouldn't just see a red fog that is suppose to cover all the black that the universe really is (watch the E3 reveal) I want to see distant galaxies and stars and everything that makes the universe so beautiful. I know that it isn't just stars and lights everywhere when you go beyond our planet in real life but still. You are making a game where you can make dreams come true.. I'll never understand the hype there was for NMS, what was your idea about this game? I was surprised when the game finally came out and almost everybody was disappointed. Yes there have been lies etc, but even in old videos it was showed nothing more than what you could actually do in game at launch, so just traveling around watching new things over and over in an uninhabited universe. I think that most people don't like an universe in which you're alone, there have to be other civilizations also on planets. You talk about this game like it's the most ambitious game ever made, so lots of stars? ED also has a huge universe. Procedural generation? Look at what 2008 Spore did and tell me the difference. Laws of physics and "everything almost like in the real world"? Compare it to KSP and come back. It always seemed too simplistic, cartoonish, with colors everywhere, how can you say it's realistic? I've always been skeptic about this game and have yet to understand what did you expect. If somebody cares to explain me I'll hear, but really, it seems just another normal game, nothing revolutionary. I think that it was Sony sponsoring it that made a large audience come in contact with it, but if you look for revolutionary games you can find plenty more ambitious than this

According to this theory of limitless possibilities in the universe of "no man's sky", isn't it possible for someone to find a planet that resembles our earth, with blue sky, green trees, and cats included?

First of all the possibilities are not limitless. They are many but not infinite. Secondly, that depends on their algorithms. If, as the developer said, wavelength and humidity play into a planet's atmosphere color and they set up their parametres in a realistic fashion (looks more cartoony, exaggerated to me) then a planet with the same humidity and distance from a sun similar to ours would resemble Earth visually. I don't know how animal species and foliage are generated, what rules their visual design follows. Again, if they are set up in a realistic fashion then obviously Earth would be populated by mostly green/brown plants, reptilians, insects, mammals etc. and he did say that cats are in the game so an Earth-like planet could feature them.

Is it? What's so special about this game that it's considered so revolutionary by some?

@@Marco-zt2jj because of the recent discoveries of quantum mechanics and the way the real world works, it is very similar to this game. Take the old addage "if a tree falls in a forest with no one around, does the tree make a sound?" We can now scientifically say that no, it does not. We discovered that atoms act like waves as well as particles. Waves being something that is not real/solid as you and mean would define it, and particles something solid and real meaning we can look at it, take a microscope to it and look into/at it. But we found that the more you look into an atom, the more that you find. We have no idea what atoms are made out of because the more we look, the more we find. Quantum science has proven that technically there is nothing that makes up an atom and the only reason why we keep finding more and more "stuff" that makes up the atom is because we keep looking. So we will never find out what an atom is made out of because the more we look, the more that is generated. Kind of like the mandelbrot set if you are familiar with fractals. Going back to what I said concerning that atoms act like waves and particles, quantum science has proven that atoms behave differently depending if there is an observer there to watch it all happen. Look up the double slit experiment if you want to see what I mean officially but I will summarize it for you. They conducted an experiment with atoms/electrons and found that the results of the experiement had two different outcomes and the only variable that changed was a human being observing it. Meaning atoms behaved differently if they were viewed during the experiment vs. is they were not viewed during the experiment. A way to visualize this, that will blow your mind, is to think of your refridgerator. The food/stuff inside of your fridge does not exist, and the atoms that compose all the food/stuff in your fridge act as "waves" meaning they can not be measured/seen by the human eye. Meaning they do not exist as real as you and I would define it, you can not hold or touch the stuff inside the fridge because it is not a solid thing. BUT when an observer opens the fridge they find food as you would expect when you open a fridge and that is because until you are there looking at it the atoms act like waves are not solid until you look at them, then the atoms snap into place and become particles. Particles meaning real, tangible things you can pick up, look at, and look at with a microscope to see the atoms. 5:37 before any updates were implemented on GTA V nothing popped in, it all used to fade in in such a way that you never noticed it. i only know this because when i got the game on the midnight release i was blown away by how good it all looked, and since the with every periodic update they make it takes away from the single-player graphics, and now things pop in. you can just delete the updates to see what i mean, and you'll notice a difference, and don't worry, you can put the updates back on after if you want (ive done this myself so don't worry it wont bosh ur game). but yeah, everything used to fade into view when GTA V first came out, its something i miss very much since the new updates.

This work looks so beautifully gorgeous and immersive. Some part of me hopes that we get to hunt. Not that I'm some evil bloodthirsty killer, but I feel like flying to a planet and just walking around and looking at the life would only work for about 20 minutes. Hunting lets you remain immersed (even more so because you need to pay attention to surroundings and the behavior of the animals, etc.) but also gives you a goal or reward.

In another interview you(sean) said that a resource on a planet can be mined for units(in game currency) but wouldn't that change in the terrain change the algorithm used to generate the planet? or maybe these changes have to be implemented to the finished planetary product of the given algorithm after it has finished creating the planet? but that would mean storing extra data and the time it takes to implement these changes would maybe cause a lowered frame rate because it would take more time to render and also do the math. A second point, Minecraft does EXACTLY this, so why does minecraft servers sometimes run into disc storage issues? Because they allow players to change the environment and store the difference from the mathmatical formula to what the player has changed it to, so unless you completely remove the players ability to interact with the environment, you'll still get issues.

Well, the way they describe it, I don't think that world you impact will stay impacted for anyone else, or even for you in future visits, because the game doesn't save anything from that planet when you leave it. This leads me to believe that anything to do on a planet will be (actually) randomly generated on entry, and it won't involve any sort of impact on the geography or wildlife. Pirates flying around, some box you can collect etc

Aside from the incredible amount of ingenuity in this universe, the only downside I see, by this mathematical word generation, is that if it's truly only mathematically generated with only the player position as input, you can't affect your surroundings. Say you kill an animal, if this information is not stored, the next time the world is calculated with your position as input, the animal will still be there since the base equation haven't changed.

They are probably using the player's multiplied x,y,z position to get a number to use as a seed to generate things close to the player. Nothings needs to be stored because when the player position is the same, the same outcome will that number have and things will generate around that position. It's a bit more complicated than that but that is a rough explanation.

This game has gotten me really excited about the future of gaming, I mean 5 billion years to complete it if 1 second is spent on each planet? The scale of it is utterly massive. It leaves so much room for new games, focused on autonomy and freedom to pop up and start replacing the stock standard "you do this" style of game. Although I respect those games and those who enjoy them (this type has been the most common throughout history and will continue to play a major role in gaming) I really can't wait to see where this level of sandbox takes us. Will we finally be able to get the ultimate sandbox, in which every action you take has a reaction and the game is a never ending cycle of life? I don't know, but I'm hoping more games like this start to pop up. We've got some exciting stuff to look forward to.

You don't modify the algorithm, they would probably start out with a base layer that persists changes to a server or database and apply all other procedural algorithms to that. In that way the world responds appropriately to said changes. Algorithms apply universally, you cannot change an algorithm for an individual exception like a object that has been left (technically you can but it's highly undesirable).

Its an online game, but at the same time not. You, and every other player, are dropped on a different planet, as in no player spawns on the same planet ever. You can meet up with other players, but you can't do much with them. The goal is to reach the centre of the galaxy, and the game gets harder and harder the further in you get, so to get there, you have to upgrade your weapons, amour and ship by physically landing on planets and gathering resources to upgrade them. There is also, as you can see from this video, combat, both in space and on the ground. You can destroy other ships and other enemies and you can get cash to spend at space stations, although this has only been lightly mentioned by Sean, so we don't know if it's actually in there. But yeah, the whole point is to explore and enjoy. No story, no missions, no epic quest. Just you going on an adventure. And one hell of an adventure it will be. p.s sorry for the incredibly long response.

They want it to be brand new when you buy it because developers these days give so many details about their games these days that there isn't much of a surprise when you finally get it. That's their intention.

Gawillamon I'm not saying it is like Minecraft but it sounds like MC in the sense of "Oh, here is the game, do whatever you want" kind of thing. I agree that most developers over hype their games and tell you too much however some games need to reveal certain information more than others and for ME, this is on of those games. I just wanna see it being played for an hour to get a sense of what kind of thing you could get up to when playing it. I don't wanna buy this and find out it is a planet generating simulator just for the sake of it or what ever.

So, if I fly to a planet and I destroy that tree, does that destruction persist when I leave? If not, what is the point of conflict or meta-game relationships? If our changes to the universe do not persist, why have conflict, resource scarcity or any other second-level organization? There's no point to it.

The change is saved locally to your system forever.

Yes, the tree will still be destroyed. If someone else comes along and blows up a mountain, you can return to find that the mountain is no longer there.

Sean Murray mentioned it in one or two of his interviews. Though he did say tiny, unnoticeable changes (like a foot-sized crater) wouldn't be there forever.
