@@pseudoposse curious if you know much about force field blocks, i made a base with a friend on a privately hosted server, and put down a 4 deep pit with those window shape force field blocks, all around my base except for a single block so they had some path to us. anyways, the people hosting or that have server logs are claiming that my force field blocks were throwing errors into the console causing the server to crash. i highly doubt that at all, because it was crashing even before i even placed any force field blocks, but i want to know for a certainty that force field blocks are totally safe and a viable option to still use.

@@foofoo3344 Fun. Don't forget to finish studying English, guys. Native English speakers need to start insisting that foreigners actually LEARN our language, due to the sheer amount of people "learning" English and constantly using it incorrectly. It's been almost 10 years now that our corners of the internet are SATURATED with foreigners, and most of them don't FULLY understand English, which makes our lives as native speakers worse, and threatens our language at the root since so many people are USING English - yet don't care at all about it! "KAREN" - bud - is a racial term, and as such it is best left to native speakers. I know - it sounds lame - but you are learning a language, and you should be sensitive. Karens are not "...offended that other people exists." .... they are "offended that other people exist.". ... Just like Nate commented "And So" - first off never start a sentence with "And" or "But", second "So" is superfluous and makes this line harder to read. We change it to "I took that personally" and viola - we have a short, funny, correctly written little goof. I usually dedicate a day in game solely for cooking/crafting to bulk up on supplies, and just deal with the screamers as they show up. Usually 2 at a time, and at least one scream. However, after I take them and the wave they spawn out, I don’t usually get any more until way later, like there is a cooldown time or something. Yes I’ve tried this since day 35, so I have plenty of game time to use as example, it’s just unexplainable to me rn.

Very informative and well thought out analysis of screamer mechanics. This the first of your vids I've seen, I'm so impressed you get my instant sub. I have to confess to reaching a totally uninformed and clumsy solution to screamers, which ironically is supported by your findings. When I get to the point where I need a really 'hot' industrial base I dig a vehicle ramp using 60 degree wedges (2 small jumps with a 2 block deep gap between keeps the casual zees out while can ride straight in) down to bedrock and then run a tunnel right under the tallest mountain in the locale, and that's where I build my base. Either the heat dissipates before it reaches the surface or the surface is beyond active spawn range, but either way I get zero screamers, even with stupid numbers of active forges (fps and smoking cpu is the bigger issue). I could probably stage a heavy metal festival down there complete with campfire and hundreds of growling Harleys (if you've ever heard hundreds of Harleys IRL you'll know its an incredible sound!) without any rude interruptions from grumpy neighbours. The one thing that makes me think it's down to active spawn range is if I ladder directly up to the surface, there's a whole bunch of shiny green angry screamy ladies who seem to have just spawned in, so I guess that mountain top is really cooking! But if you drive out via the tunnel and ramp youll exit via a cold zone so life stays pretty calm and serene. It would be a terrible idea to hike over that mountain... but why would you?

😇😇😇 The video is generally well made, and the explanation of the construction mechanics is clear and concise. However, I noticed a small mistake that could confuse less experienced viewers. At minute 9:34, when you refer to the block type as 'Cube 5m Round 05,' you are actually showing a 'Cube 5m Round 04.' It's a common but significant error since these blocks have very different characteristics and construction costs in the game. Correcting these kinds of details will help improve the accuracy of the content and avoid misunderstandings among players. Aside from that, the effort put into creating the content is appreciated. 😇😇😇

Yeah, it seems in the current game build 1.0 (b333), the screamers approach the activity (heat map from mining, dew collectors, farm plot block, forge, etc) but do not seem to actively try to break those blocks. So, potentially you could place some of them outside your claim and use a ranged weapon to snipe the screamers. Almost forget, screamers tend to spawn in pairs now.

Hate going mining and coming back to my bottom floor being like a block of cheese. Also a video dedicated to the vertical placed hollow cylinder? I wrapped them around my base made of blocks and it worked in diverting the zombies to my bridge 100%. When I downgraded the blocks supporting my base into covers (to make it feel bigger inside) the screamers started somehow pathing over the cylinder. (I'm about to check your pathing video out, sorry if that has the answer about the cylinder block)

For mining ore nodes, I tend to make a building around the mine entrance, build walls, and place spike traps. Then put a ladder and blocks above traps extending out far enough (from the top of the wall) to allow me to jump to the vehicle. Then, as with any building, mining requires supports/pillars/beams to stop the walls from collapsing as you mine the ore. I tend to go with every 4th block removed, install a 2-block wide pillar; as clay/sand/stone/ore is removed below the pillar, replace 1 block below, then mine the other side, essentially allowing the pillar to stay intact while you mine down into the ground below the pillar, essentially building it as you dig. Then, add beams off the sides of each pillar into the wall of the mine, digging 5-blocks in, then start another support pillar, then widen it, then dig all the area around the pillar, then can safely remove all the clay/sand/stone/ore safely. (ie all beams/pillars are non-upgraded building blocks, aside from that initial pillar that has the exit ladder for enter/leave the mine, which I upgrade to wood) *Note: if you have a water purifier mod in your helmet, you can drink from any water source. While mining, water needs can be met by building a 1m block (looks like a sink with a slight depression in the block, but can use others), surround it with 9 blocks below it and 8 blocks around it, then place the 1m block, and upgrade it to wood/cobblestone. Then, with a bucket, pour water into the 1m block. When you get thirsty while mining, you can drink from that instead of always having to craft more water/tea/purified water/etc, which essentially reduces the heat map of your claim. I tend to put this 'drinking block' about 4-5 levels down from the entrance. Then, before mining, I drink enough water to fill my drink/water level around 300-400 extra water in the queue, then I can mine for longer without drinking. This can be a bit 'extra' to do for a small mine (1-2 ore nodes), so I tend to only install a '1m block' for drinking in larger mines that have 3-6 ore nodes very close together. Then, as your mined area 10-20 levels down expands adding support pillars and beams, the 'exit'/ladder-pillar can be difficult to find. So, that pillar is the one I upgrade to wood, so I can quickly see where the exit ladder is. Then, when screamer/other spawns (I have my game sound turned up to easily hear them), I go up the ladder and snipe them from the top of the walls. Along with this, I always mine in sneak mode and never use auger for digging ore nodes. As you dig, the 'sneak mode meter'/'how-hidden-am-I-detection-system' meter numbers reduce closer to zero as a zombie/animal approaches, so you may want to remove rabbits and chickens that spawn as you mine so you only have to worry about the aggressive mobs after that.

This video plus your cop one and Jawoodles on the latest forcefield block, along with a comment on that video is making me see a connection. Top center seems to be the key for pathing and sight. When comes to pathing as long as the top of the glowing side of the block is a full block through the center of around a plate to pole thickness they'll path on it usually. The sight is around the same but it must be the center facing side between you and them. Obviously there's outliers but it's something I've noticed as a pattern and maybe something to look into. Though bet you getting tested out after both these. Oh. You did forget to mention that screamers have a chance to spawn at every 25 heat instead of 100. It's why they are more frequent now. Keep up the good work.

Probably the sight test is to check if the center of the block is inside or outside of the block shape. That explain why centered thin walls are safe.
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
I think that is definitely the reason why those work.
@TheImageryGuy5 ай бұрын
I mean, the materials and shapes required aside, that build seems rather effective but kind of complex to do. I normally just go with a 51-block claim size, build outer wall (4-blocks high) 2-blocks in from claim edge surrounding entire claim (so can later add turrets onto wall and potentially pick up and move them). Then, add 4-5 wood spike traps (1-block high, 4-blocks wide) around the outside. To allow access, I normally have two entrances (maybe north-side and south-side; or east & west), so a set of 2 double steel doors for each entrance. Even if the zombies manage to get through a few wood spike traps and reach the outer double steel door, the inner steel door usually holds. With that being said, you can have an open area in front of each entrance, in a t-shape or u-shape of wood spike traps (akin to a maze of traps). That outer section of spike traps can be 2-6 spike traps, depending on needs and game stage, but make sure to make it long enough to be almost as long (about 70%) as the exterior wall length. Since you can drive through spike traps on your vehicle, you can essentially entirely enclose the area outside the main doors with traps, but have an area for vehicle parking in the 'drive-thru'. Then, extending out from the top of the wall, place some blocks to walk on and jump past all the spike traps (for entering/exiting the base). And put a ladder on one of them 2-blocks high, so you can jump up to enter your base, versus having to open and close each double steel door each time you pass into or out of your base. So, from inside your base, you want to leave; you walk to an exit, walk up stairs/ladder to the top of your exterior wall, walk out onto the blocks extending out over the spike traps and jump down to your vehicle, enter vehicle and drive through spike traps to leave. In early-game, wood spike traps (currently in game build release 1.0 b333 versus prior alpha versions of the wood spike trap) are a bit more beefy and last rather well, as long as you regularly repair them. Even if you do not fully repair all of the wood spike traps every in-game day or so (or upgrade them to iron is also a viable option later on), they are rather cheap to replace if a few get broken; wood is significantly cheaper/easier to obtain for repairing wood spike traps compared to repairing cobblestone/cement/steel wall blocks. So, the first few zombies (screamers included) tend to be rather easy to kill with wood spike traps. Then, if/when screamers spawn and actually reach an entrance door, I enter sneak mode and approach the direction the screamer is attacking door from to find which entrance it is at. Then, move to one of the corners of the base (again, stairs or ladder), get on the top of the wall, enter sneak mode, and snipe the screamer from a distance with bow/crossbow/hunting rifle/lever-action rifle/sniper rifle. If you can manage to 1-shot a screamer, no extra mobs are spawned in, but that does not always happen. So, you may need to kill the extra mobs the screamer spawns in and repair all the spike traps. A trick you can use to reduce the heat map of your base in early-game is: around 30-50 blocks from the edge of your claim border, place water and food production (ie farm plot blocks and dew collectors) on the ground. Then, when your base is properly defended, place a claim block to pick up the farm plot blocks and dew collectors to move them into the base, then destroy the claim block. So, tldr: as you upgrade your base's outer wall to concrete or steel blocks, it may be time to consider upgrading all the spike traps to iron spike traps.

There's definitely different levels of complexity and resource investment that one can do to achieve a similar result. All dependent on one's affinity for building! I think this one is one of my more simple ones haha. You certainly don't need all the extra embellishments and you don't need to make it circular. At its core, it's just a tower with a simple defense and compact storage/crafting area. Your setup sounds great! Definitely will take time to build all that up but if it works, no reason to change :)
@robertb62765 ай бұрын
You're missing an important aspect of screamer spawning naturally. When they spawn they have a target, the hot spot location. They spawn at a location and move toward that hotspot so eventually they will come within the 15 meter range and scream.
@pseudoposse5 ай бұрын
That is exactly way I made a tower base in which every point of the base is 15+ meters away regardless of where the screamer wanders. If you build directly on the ground level, you'd absolutely run into that issue unless you make a giant perimeter wall that guarantees that every point of the base meets that range requirement.
@hcharlequinharlequincorps83944 ай бұрын
@@pseudoposse You both have it kind of wrong. The heat index is for a general area. From bedrock to sky limit. Try running 50 heat in each of 4 seperated locations in the same area. Same thing if you run that much heat at bedrock. Yes they will track the light/sound/heat, but the spawn rate is for the general heat of the area. The behavior that you want to be talking about isn't the spawn or the heat/light/sound pathing, it's the scream. So the right test to do is actually under what conditions they scream spawn a siege, not just track to you. They have a "Fake" scream which doesn't spawn and the proper "Scream" that does spawn. They won't scream spawn unless they have LOS on you, even momentary LOS. But it is a much longer range than cop snot or vulture spit.

i would place a hatch near the ladder and put some sledgehammer turret that way during horde you can slow down the zombie from damaging the wall because they need to go up again. the biggest concern now is if you have mg gunner with AP rounds those can damage the ground, I also tested the underground base method and so far the underground version is working really well because MG gunner can just spray and pray without worrying of damaging the wall. ofc this is only works if you already have a better digging tool
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
You can definitely add the turret for some extra crowd control. AP ammo won't do a crazy amount of damage to the blocks, so I wouldn't be too worried about it. That being said, glad to hear that underground bases have been working really well!

On mine and my wife’s game it was day 8 I was doing a mission and unloaded a magazine for the pipe machine gun and 2 shots of the pipe shotgun and had 2 screamers spawn in from outside and they spawned in 3 cop zombies as well. We don’t live near the mission location it was a random location.
@pseudoposse5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, not much you can do to prevent that...screamers are spawned by noise as well. So shooting a lot will cause them to spawn no matter where you are located.

Mine and my squads base is a huge "Fallout Vault inspired" underground bunker, so screamers have a hard time getting to us (20+ rock and dirt around it) sure there's the entrance tunnel, but turrets fix that. We've been working on it since 1.0 release.

We're OG console edition players (my wife and I), been playing for years. We are on 1.0 now. I figured out the best way to prevent screamers, was building an entire huge base underground-desert, easiest to dig to. Screamers got so bad on ours, they were literally 24/7.

Very informative, per usual. But I was super hoping this would also cover the screamer changes and what is now a dangerous heat source compared to before. As a player with 5k hours the new screamer spawning perimeters feel so arbitrary. I could run four forges, dew collectors, and campfires and not get one, or my character could fart really loud and spawn two.

I wanted to focus mostly on preventative measures rather then discuss how the heat generation works. But that could definitely be a new video!

I do I do have base ideas! I love the spear/sniper build, and I'm workin' on a crawler base. cautious pancake was suggesting the stair tip upside down. but I'm worried about if lategame, there's bears, and whether the new direwolf would fit that 1.5 block crawlspace...and if NOT...how do I construct an alternate path that only animals would use? so one thing to test, is a "secondary path differential" ie...how long can a path be viable? how MUCH longer MUST it be, to be treated as secondary in almost all situations? I was using a base that had the same ladder to slope option, but I was mid construction of CP's crawlbase. I just slapped a ladder onto the construction, walled off the unfinished areas, and MOSTLY they preferred this path, crawled the 5 or so blocks that were present, and fell off the "diving board path." but about 15% of zombies preferred the old ladder. I HYPOTHESIZE. it had something to do with direction of approach, seeing the old ladder first...so it having to do with the "secondary option differerential" so would be awesome to see some kind of rigorous testing to convey something like..."What do they prefer? like if you have equal paths, but one has more blockbarriers...or...what if one path is LONGER but has a door at the end...[assuming doors attract zombies...] how do you minipulate their pathing, and by how much CAN you?
@pseudoposse5 ай бұрын
That could be a fun video idea! Thank you for the in-depth explanation!

I wanted to mention that in your base building portion, where you put the blocks up, you list Cube 5m Round 04 at the very start. That doesn't seem to be the block you are using there. It appears to be the "Cube 1/4 5m Round 05". At least I couldn't make Round 04 work in any direction without it sticking way out inside.
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
For the lower towers I use the cube 1/4 5m. For the wider part, I used combination of cube 1/4 7m and cube 7m.
@Einarr995 ай бұрын
I wonder if the 15 block distance is related at all to chunks? Isn't a chunk 16 by 16? I've also started to find zombies digging down when my bedrock forges were and also some mining. I found a huge single column pit digging down maybe 3-4 blocks behind where my forges were. i think me traveling far enough may have despawned it since when i heard her i ran away then up to snipe more than one screamer. another spot i noticed surface digging above a lead or iron mine at bedrock. Maybe the forest is too close to bedrock where i built.
@pseudoposse5 ай бұрын
Hmm there could be some correlation between chunks and the distance. I think the 16x16 dimensions are correct.
