A simple moat of 2-3 blocks deep of empty space, Fits into realistic look, realistic planning, and actually prevents zombie AI from just breaking the walls to get to you on a ground level base. Several simple designs with a Moat and 1-2 block height from the ground would still look real and function to force the AI to get funneled where you want it too. AKA "I have the High Ground Anakin....I mean zombie horde."

Okay, as impressive as that base is... the most impressive thing about this video was a scantily clad Taco making it up a ladder! I feel she's been secretly practicing off-camera!! Okay, so I mentioned to you about my latest horde base design, but I can't help but imagine what your crazy brain could come up with. What I've been working on designing and now building is a base with a central hub and multiple ways of dealing with a horde night. For now it has 3 ways to fight in cardinal directions and I'm trying to come up with a fourth. Each side is controlled with a switch that turns on that side and if the switch is off then that side is non-functional and no longer a path for the zombie AI. For now, the three sides are afk, sniper/guns, and melee. This allows a single base to let you do whichever type of horde night that you are in the mood for with just a flick of a switch. I won't go in to detail on the actual design for each path in this, but I would like to challenge you to come up with your own version of something like this. I'm VERY curious to see what you could make. The only stipulation is that it needs to be designed for at least 2 people to do a horde night. Okay, gauntlet thrown so let's see what happens, lol. Love you guys and your content *muah* !
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
She may have been lol! That sounds pretty cool! I did something similar ages ago with a central hub and corridors in the cardinal directions. But instead of controlled by switches, it was all connected via tripwire so the corridors would open/close one at a time based off the initial tripwire activation. You can take a look at it here but be forewarned, I edited this one early on and I don't have any of Taco's panache: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZKZZoKQbdOLaJI. I'll have to revisit the idea in the future though!
@Oktokolo4 ай бұрын
For less material costs of the outer walls: Surround the base with a moat on the three sides the zombies are not supposed to enter. For even less cheese: Use an air lock at the end of the funnel instead of hard-walling it off. Have a cage reaching one block inside the room and one of the sides of that cage be a door. That way, you can still use your sniper rifle for perfect penetration shots down the funnel, but can enter your base using the same path, the zombies will try to use. For a more convenient player experience, I would ditch the second ceiling and instead replace the scaffolding ladders with doubled-up bars. That removes the potential for players falling through the upper ceiling onto the lower and having to jump to get free. It also makes aiming slightly easier as you're only aiming through one ceiling instead of two. Nades can still be deployed using the chutes. For more resilience, I would add another airlock at the bottom of the stars and one at the top. That allows for using the back room as a second bailey in case they break through the air lock at the end of the funnel. Just for completeness sake I would also add outside-facing machicolations all around the base. I hate dead spots in my base defenses and occasionally single zombies do get stuck in munching at some random block. Machicolations allow sniping those without exposing yourself to them. Dire wolves might or might not have problems seeing the one-block corridor as a path. I would like to watch a video about what actually is a path for them and what isn't and where they get stuck or not. So all in all it's a nice base proving that you indeed still can just build your base like a medieval castle and it will just work fine like in all previous alphas. I like it.

I loved that base build. I usually build simply and go on from there with alterations as I go. I currently have a pill box base on a central column with .025 poles holding up the corners and it is about 13 or 14 meters high off the ground. I repeat the supporting poles going from the front of the pill box spaced out about 6 meters to support a narrow walkway that looks like a long balance beam that leads from another elevated platform that the zombies access via 3 different ramp routes. I try to make the access ramps long and winding enough for the zombies to lose their rampaging phase before they get up on the walkway. Doesn't always work with a stun baton with a repulsor mod on it as it knocks them toward the ramps. The aforementioned pill box has a three wide open "service window" with scaffolding ladders running across the top and bottom. I double these layers for added protection. To keep zombies from crawling through, I use the double poles placed between the ladders. Above the top ladders, I put ramp blocks in so as to block zombies from climbing on top. For the inevitable birds, I have a ladder with a hatch to reach the roof and I place a bunch of spikes on top for them to impale themselves upon. From the service window, this allows me and up to two buddies to shoot at or beat zombies coming toward us. Later on, I'll add blade traps to the ground floor of the base where the zombies must fall down to at some point and have to run through a gauntlet of whirling blades. While this base is great for vanilla, it will need a LOT more for the Darkness Falls mod.

I love this game and I love the depth of ideas that can be used for base design; my biggest peeve has always been that I want to fight as many zombies as possible on horde nights, but at game stage 300+ when almost everything is radiated, not only does it take a long time to kill each zombie, but you have to hope that your base holds up. It feels like the options are either to make a dropper type base, so you don't have to fight them (but also don't get Xp from kills) or use traps that also grant no/ minimal XP until you level up INT. I'm trying to experiment with a Zombie dropper base that has two approaches- each with a 'killing corridor' dropper, and then some of the zigzag, pole walkways. I want to have a Steel garage door under each dropper but on alternate timings- so when one opens, the other closes. If I can figure out the trigger mechanism, it means I should be able to fight *some* zombies (but not too many to damage the fighting position) then switch to the other approach, so the zombies have to double back and give me time to reload/ repair before they come in, trigger the doors and rinse repeat.
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
The building possibilities are really great. Towards your idea, I made a design with tripwire that did exactly what you talk about. In my design, zombies would reach the end of a powered hatch corridor, drop down into a killing corridor which would open up another path allowing you to make any repairs and what not. Then that next path will close opening the original. This video is a bit old and rough around the edges but it explains how it works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZKZZoKQbdOLaJI Of course me being me, I took it to the extreme and had 4 cascading opening/closing paths but I show an example with 2 paths. Hope that helps!

i love how my base design in A16 was awful since zombies just went for the straight way to you instead of the easiest route, but after they changed their AI then my base became almost the best base i could wish for that doesn't cheese the zombies. (it has aspects of the base described in this video, but has the main base in it as well and is using electric fences that are connected in series instead so if one runs out of durability then it will still work until every single electric fence runs out of hp, but makes it very weak if one of the fences gets broken by explotions breaking the entire connection)

I love this idea because while I do greatly appreciate cheese bases, I feel like it would be nice having a reliable lactose free base at the VERY start of a horde for funsies. But if things go awry, I could always fall back to a cheese base, especially if I plant a bedroll in the supply room of the cheese base if things goes totally south lol. I prefer playing singleplayer, but sometimes I see the amazing results of cheese bases and worry I'd get bored if it works *too* well (I own too many games to have been able to reach high level hordes before a ton of updates had gone through during Alpha, so I rarely got to play with even mid-level cheese bases before needing to start a new save lmao), so this is a very nice setup for some extra thrill

We dug a trench around it but forgot to leave paths to us, so they fell in trench and dug underneath us lol. edit: I'm like the tapered base walls with the ramps. Also, I like one of the previous videos where you kept track of the resources used to build the base since you're building in creative mode. :) edit 2: Another style of base I'd like to see... combined horde and crafting base in this "NO CHEESE" design philosophy (MP friendly being a huge plus).

But if you are looking for a design now, I would recommend adding a tower in the back of the base (on top of the sniper/melee position) where you could safely store all your stuff.

Almost impossible these days to build in a non cheesing way. Even this could be considered cheesing as we exactly know wich way the zeds are about to come in and use it to funnel them into our traps. 😅 I think the only viable way to not cheese hordes ist to pick a random house, look for any obvious ways up, knock them out and wait for what's going to happen. That way you'll have them zeds working out their own way to get to you, wich often is very surprising, and you gotta adapt to any given situation. I also find this to be the most exciting and fun way to deal with hordes, since anything else is just exploiting their pathing. Don't get me wrong though, I love your creativity and always praise your builds! Your bases are always something else! Cheers 😉
@KeiTheOne9914 ай бұрын
This. Exactly this. The creator did such a good job but I feel like people are setting out unrealistic expectations. If you manipulate the AI in any way, you are cheesing 😂
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
Haha fair enough! Though I would counter with leading an enemy into a chokepoint is a strategy as old as time. I think it is fair to assume (you know if zombies were real) that if you positioned yourself inside a building with makeshift defenses, and left lights on and noises emanating from within, that it would draw attention of zombies through the front. It does make sense in a RP (realism) sort of way. But that could also be me coping 🤣
@thenomad23114 ай бұрын
Also, zombies in movies always go to doors they don't try to beat through the side of the mall. Would have made all of George a Romero's movies really interesting though if they just tried to destroy every building. No he fed off the idea that the people that turn into zombies go through the doors Etc because part of them still exists somewhere lost inside of the zombies. Anyway long story short all of these arguments are really false equivalents. Zombies have pathing. Deliberately abusing the mechanic in a way it wasn't intended is a cheese base
@Veazy34 ай бұрын
Fun Pimps said game contains tower defense elements, so forcing enemies into single path with chokepoints, killzones, etc isn't a cheese
@KeiTheOne9914 ай бұрын
@@Veazy3 I would agree, but most of the people who complain about cheese bases would disagree with you. Creating a path and limiting alternative routes or setting up a killing corridor is not cheese, that is a mechanic put in by the developers. Also using wedges and half blocks to create a path that the zombie will walk to but cannot walk on is not cheese either, by the same logic. It is a mechanic the development team put into the game. It can't be cheese if they give you the tools for it.
@bigsuperman33010 күн бұрын
When i made this base i had alot more zombies then i expected banging on the outside walls. Mostly by the end of the corridor. Any way i can stop them. A 5x5 moat seems ok but cant i use cheese blocks that stop they're pathing? Just curious. Cheerrs love your videos
@pseudoposse9 күн бұрын
You could certainly use cheese blocks to prevent them from pathing if you don't mind using cheese. But if they are trying to break through the outside, you need to make your walls thick enough to force them through the front.

I notice this is a lesser/inefficient version of horde bases made as far back as a18 (that I recall). This is very generic, with your own modifications (of which most appear to be restrictive rather than useful). Some of the newer shapes is worth a mention, but other than that, its just a generic horde design that been done 100's of times. However, it's good to know this same generic design still works just fine. (I use it often when building a fast/easy horde base.) TIP: The ladder difficulty most people seem to have is hitting their head on the bottom ladder when jumping too close to the wall. This can be avoided by placing 'plates' the same thickness as the ladder under the ladder, so players cannot move 'under' the ladder, and thus will never hit their head on it.
@pseudoposse4 ай бұрын
That is kind of the point. Usually generic, regular looking bases don't really perform that well (at least since the A17? AI changes) so I wanted to get it to work well enough.
@TheImageryGuy4 ай бұрын
I mean, sure. A complex base you design and build in godmode, but realistically, at what point does the average player have about 5k-6k cement/steel, 18k wood, and 5k-6k cobblestone to plop down in one go by day 7, 14, or even 21 bloodmoon. If you want actual players to make your end-game base, actually play a session, stream collecting all the resources, and build your horde base in stages, finally ending up with the final design shown in your vid at 16:00. And show each stage of the build, for a day 7 bloodmoon, day 14, day 21, day 28, etc. So, if it takes a few bloodmoons worth of actual game play time to get those resources, that original build design can still be used in cobblestone, concrete, or steel, then upgraded as those 'upgrades' are unlocked and made available by gathering the resources, doing the forges, cement mixers, etc to reach the build design goal. I have found doing all of that will show those blaring errors, such as zombies love to jump on top of each other. In your base's design, you made the platform (ie area where the zombies die) wider than 1-2 blocks, so not many zombies jump on top of each other. I mean, until they get to the 1-wide section at the end. So, idk. However good or bad example (of an error) it is, you may discover those errors before you stream something that is obvious to the average player. To prevent that jumping, I tend to now always use a 2-block high roof of building blocks; I suppose in your case (ie your base in this video), you may choose scaffolding ladder block shape (or that 4-way/plus sign) as the roof (2-blocks high above the 'platform') to still allow shooting or whatever. If it can be built up in stages and upgraded as you progress, then it will apply to the average player. Otherwise, have you ever heard the us military acronym (er, pretty sure only the army did this one for all the blockhead idiots joining) K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid). Basically, keep it simple enough for idiots to follow the path, the directions, or your methodology. Basically, a wider audience will 'mentally digest' and be able to recreate your design the less complex/more simple it is. I know, I know. All of this is tedious and 'beneath your intelligence'. Or consider the fact that the smartest people have no clue how to explain their ideas to the average person, so either it is a communications issue or they are not really 'smart'. Take that with a grain of salt, but just know that if you work on how you present/communicate it, maybe you will have more people trying to recreate your 'creations'.

I've been playing 7 days to die off and on since I got it on Xbox 5-6 years ago and then moved to PC. 7 days to die offers the best zombie survival world-space I've seen in video games and I love the idea of making my own bases to defend against the horde, but I like to build stuff that you might see in TWD or similar holdout bases. The experience is completely ruined for me if I have to make Wipeout bases. The pathing of zombies has been tweaked a few times over the years but it has never felt okay to me. They always behave irrationally or with overwhelming brute force and that doesn't line up with the pace of player progression in my eyes. Wacky base design to counter overly aggressive zombie script is a downfall in my opinion. There are multiple problems with the game even outside of the horde night(graphical issues, zombie crawling behavior, magazine progression, loot pools, questing) that I overlook most of the time but this just makes me think about all those other problems and how this game is in no way stable.

I don't see it as cheese to make a base which makes the zombie pathing AI act in special ways. It is imo actually playing the game as intended, since if not, TFP would have made the AI different. Even before A17 , we made our bases based on how we knew zombies would most likely act. Though, someone playing the game with just fighting in mind might call an AFK base cheese, while someone playing it as a survivalist/roleplaying might see AFK bases totally legit (to avoid infection, etc). Probaly other way to play too. The one featured in this video however , seems at least to me fully legit. Used to call them boombox bases. Very very effective and simple.

Its next to impossible to build a base that does not take into consideration the zombie pathing, and have the base survive! No hate to the creator, absolutely love the content, but I feel like any base someone copied from a video is cheese because you have already seen the build and how it works.
