In this video on the Mental Health Act 1983 I cover the basics of Section 2 and Section 3. Other terms introduced are Mental Health Act Assessment, Approved Mental Health Professional, , Nearest Relative, Mental Health Review Tribunals, Managers' Hearings, Independent Mental Health Advocate, Second Opinion Appointed Doctor (SOAD), Section 17 Leave, Responsible Clinician.

My mother was just admitted under section 2 and i'm just glad she's able to not only get the treatment she needs, but for the rest of my family to recover as well. I see a lot of strange comments on this video alluding to 'so called' illnesses as if they're made up, and i have to respond. The behaviour my mum has displayed - especially in the last 4 days is that of a person that longer resembles my mother. She will have brief moments of coherence, but only after she had a full night's sleep after the first visit to hospital. She physically attacked myself and other family members and also had wild hallucinations right infront of me. My family are physically and emotionally drained, and for anyone claiming this is normal behaviour or her illness isn't real, then i simply do not have words for you. I'm glad she's away getting help, because if she came back to us in a manic state, my family couldn't cope.

How are you giving up on the person that gave birth to you? Who went through unimaginable pain when carrying you in her womb for 9 months? And you simply just "dispose" of this person because you don't want to deal with her. Or don't want it to be your problem? Selfish! If you ever have children, they will do the same to you and you will know how much you hurt your mother! 🤯🤯🤯😤😤😤😤

I don't think you should judge! unless you know all the facts.( And I know all the facts could not be put on here. I recon it would take pages) The thing is at least their mother will get some help now, and hopefully in time be back with her family; Who clearly love her and want their mother back to how she was. Metal Health is a complex situation that effect people in many different ways. I know this because my own daughter is Mentally ill & we have tried for years to get help and to get someone to listen. But as it is now, guessing like so many people. We wait in worry for that knock on the door to say something terrible has happened to our loved one. So think on before you Judge! Be it someone's Mother / Father or child; it's because we love them, we want them to get help and get better. @@originalunoriginal4055

I agree. It is very fightening being so unwell that you have to go to hospital even though you don't want to or think you need to, Alice. Why don't you ask to speak with your named nurse or junior doctor, or your social worker or an Independent Mental Health Advocate? You have rights under the Mental Health Act (Section 132 rights). You should have been told them and received them in writing. You could ask for them again. Thank you for your post, and hope things improve for you. Keep us updated.

@DrBethColby
@DrBethColby 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Collin. It must have been very upsetting for your friend and her mother when her mother wasn't allowed to visit her. I can't comment on this, as I wasn't there, but generally there are set hours for visitors to a psychiatric ward. If a patient is very unwell and it is thought that having a visitor would have a detrimental affect on his or her mental state, then the visitor may not be allowed at that time; and as soon as the patient is well enough to see the visitor, then this would be encouraged. Every patient on a Section of the Mental Health Act has the right to an Independent Mental Health Advocate to speak on their behalf. However, if a patient is extremely unwell, then they may not be in the right frame of mind to request one. Best wishes, Beth

Can someone be forced to take a depot injection in hospital when they want and are taking a tablet form of the drug?
@DrBethColby
@DrBethColby Жыл бұрын
HI there. Good question. If a person is under the Mental Health Act, then medication can be given against a person's wishes. However, this will not occur (unless in an emergency) without talking with a patient and discussing it with them. If a person has been under the Mental Health Act on a Section 3 or 37 for more than 3 months, then medication can only be given either if the person has capacity to make the decision and is agreeing to the medication or if they do not have capacity and are not agreeing to have the medication, a Second Opinion Appointed Doctor (SOAD) needs to see the patient and talk to 2 other members of the Multidisciplinary Team about whether the medication is appropriate for the patient before the SOAD decides whether to agree with the prescriber's medication plan (the Responsible Clinician). Sometimes patients may say they are taking tablets but may not actually swallow them and may hide them in their mouths or spit them out. This may be when a depot injection is considered.

Hi there. Thank you very much for this useful comment. I will put what I write below under the 'description' of the video. The first thing to do is ask the person you are concerned about whether they would be willing to see their GP. If the person is willing to accept help from a GP, that is great. (Or if more urgent, if they would be happy to go with you to the local Accident and Emergency). The GP would refer the person to mental health services if necessary and can get the person seen urgently. If you feel you or anybody in the household or the person you are worried about is in immediate danger, you can call the police. You can find your local NHS Mental Health Helpline (England only) on www.nhs.uk/service-search/mental-health/find-an-urgent-mental-health-helpline

@TalkMentalHealthbyDrBethColby I was in an abusive relationship, my husband drugged me after years of abuse (I'm teetotal/non-smoker/educated) I asked my sister to take me to A&E she has diagnosed bpd. She tried to stitch me up and get me sectioned (!??) They obv couldn't find any evidence of mental demise although im sure they didn't believe me about husband poisening me. I ended up seeking support from refuge, fled with a few carrier bags and have never looked back. They joined forces to try and bring me down but it only strengthened my case. Trust your instinct not everyone who SAYS they care are on your side. Cut contact with sabotagers and your peace will return .

I only spoke to MH services to be assessed over the phone every time I ended up in A&E/ physical health hospital ward for injuring myself. Eventually my treatment was "you are being discharged into your parents care and you will contact the MH services in that trust" and to be fair the MH services in my parents county did offer me treatment I just had to move counties to get it lol. Can you be voluntary sectioned for addiction based behaviour?
@DrBethColby
@DrBethColby 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham. People who are sectioned to hospital go there against their wishes, unless they are agreeing to go to hospital but do not have the capacity to make that decision. In order to be sectioned a person needs to have a mental disorder (of a nature or degree that warrants detention in hospital) and needs to go to hospital for their own health, safety or safety of others and are refusing to go in (or do not have the capacity to consent to going in). People are not sectioned due to an addiction on its own. People who go into hospital as a voluntary or informal patient do so to assess whether they have a mental illness or to treat it. Somebody must be very ill to be admitted to hospital nowadays, as a lot of the assessment and treatment can be done in people's home if the risk of harm to themselves or others is low. Maybe you could let me know a bit about the addiction based behaviour so I can answer the question more fully? Best wishes, Beth

Thank you for this. I have a young (aged 23) relative staying with me, to give his parents a break from his disturbing behaviour and an attempted assault. After a week of our getting along fine, he appears to have "become another person". My own mental health is quite poor. As he's refusing his prescription drugs and is making threats (I don't feel threatened, but he has the capacity to hurt others), I've requested help from local health authority. @@DrBethColby he is an AMHP working for Surrey County Council. He phoned me late at night. I had no idea who he was or what an AMPH was. He accused me aggressively of missing a MHA A . I said I had no idea who he was and had never been offered an appointment and didn’t have any mental Ill health. At that point he threatened to have my front door kicked in and have me removed to police cells as there was no bed spaces or something. I was caring for my 72 year old husband at the time, I was terrified and so we all left home…my 81 year old mum, myself who was waiting for a double transplant and my hubby who was on breathing apparatus. The authority know now that the report they had flagging health concerns was inaccurate but have threatened to process my data for 20 years. So I have from fear and stigma ceased accessing all care from the nhs, removed myself from the transplant register and spend every waking hour crying.
