I had a major accident and am paralyzed to the right leg, I have bladder retention and according to two scans, there is always 280-300cc left in the bladder. The paralysis was due to a squished nerve in my lower back. My last scan was today, same thing. I should send my urologist this video

Excellent video!!! Loved the explanation! i have a question, in the case of of sacral spinal cord injury, from what i understand according to this video, that the injury interrupts the bladder reflex-meaning if urine fills & fills no sensation & no contraction can be felt nor occur. This results in bladder holding lots of urine without the urgency sensation. No detrusor contraction or diminished causing flaccid bladder & stress incontinence occurs. If the urine is also retained in this case, why are there no high bladder pressure or hydronephrosis like the suprasacral SCI? is it just bcs of weak bladder& sphincters? I hope im making sense.

@@user-ru5dh5dn2r dont know yet. Probably disc herniation in the spine. It can press on nerves which impact the bladder. But this is one of the possible reasons. Have an appointment for mri of lumbar and chest zones of the spine. But it all is gonna be after the quarantine.

I had a disc extrusion and sequestration at L5S1 and aside from causing excruciating pain and loss of the ability to walk, I also lost the ability to urinate during that time. I had a microdiscectomy and laminectomy but the weakness and pain in my leg never went away and I was left with urinary retention. . Now I get UTI’s frequently - about 4 a year.

Looking for your thoughts on bladder sensation. My issue is that I don’t feel when my bladder is full. I have no sensation of bladder fullness. When I sit to urinate, I can void with no problem and ultrasounds show that my bladder is in fact completely emptying. But what could cause sensory issues ??? I am 10 months postpartum with a mild prolapsed uterus and bladder. Could this be causing pressure on the sacral nerves? The loss of bladder sensation arose 7 months post partum and were not present before. Your video mentions that the sacral nerve controls the reflex. By all accounts my reflex is working fine but might you know what causes issues solely with sensation ? Thanks so much

This is kind of off topic, but you mentioned sacral spinal cord injuries. I know of a couple of people with L2 injuries that say they are paraplegics with spinal cord injuries. If the spinal cord ends at L1...how can L2 and lower equate to a spinal cord injury? Do the nerves somehow bounce damaged signals up to the spinal cord?
@locorammy
@locorammy 2 жыл бұрын
To my understanding sometimes the spinal cord can end at L2 depending on the person. Also the very end of the spinal cord is called the conus medullaris which ends somewhere at L1 and L2, it’s still part of the spinal cord.
@morgancalvi6675
@morgancalvi6675 2 жыл бұрын
'Sometimes' is the operative word here. The tip of the spinal cord or conus is situated at L2 vertebral level. Below L2, there is only spinal roots, called the cauda equina. Usually this occurs when people have an extra vertebrate...but we are talking about an incredibly small part of population.

Hello! I hope my answer is not disrrspectful... I know this video refers to people and it's not easy at all to live with it. Now I'm genuinely worried about my male cat who had spinal cord injury back in March 2020 and now is missing. I emptied his bladder manually every single day until Nov 3rd 2021 (and it was usually really full, few times not - maybe he drank less water). Then he got lost this week. I'm not sure if he can pee on his own and I'm worried the bladder might burst if nobody is there to help him. It's not written on him he has this condition. Is there a hope he can empty the bladder on his own now, 1 year 7 months after the injury? Around the time 7:00 in this video, there was something about reflexes coming back after longer time (he can walk and poop on his own, btw). What are the chances of him being still alive 4 days on his own with this condition?? (if I suppose he gets food and water somewhere...) It would be horrible to die in pain from this condition...
