How does the wind affect fish location?

Another great question for Pete. How does the wind affect the location of the fish. This is a question that does not have a cut and dry answer. However, when it comes to consistent wind for an extended period of time we can use that to determine where to target fish. Ultimately it is about patterning fish and understanding the wind is another tool that can be utilized to catch more fish.

I'm sure you have a much better understanding of wind than I do. What I have learned is to look for structure that is most often exposed to the predominant wind direction. On LOTW I'll fish a structure that will get hit more often by a south, southwest, west, or northwest wind before I fish a structure that gets hit by a east, northeast, north, or southeast wind, even if it's a dead flat calm day. I figure that on a long term percentage basis, structure that gets wind more often holds fish more than one that doesn't, all other variables being roughly similar.

In general I believe a bigger factor on the shield as so many necked down zones to great current factors when wind blows. Generally those wind directions better, but it's really more in how certain winds hit certain spots with regard to the structure. Of course, if just a generic shoreline or bay different story

@@petemaina7073 Thanks for the reply, Pete. Really do appreciate it. I think we are talking much the same concepts and this gives me confidence that my thinking is on the right track. I didn't mention the narrow necked down areas by name when I talked about wind blown structures but they were on my mind. You can get some interesting sechie effect currents in those areas with the water flowing in one direction and the wind blowing in another direction. Then when the wind calms, or changes direction, then a counter current flow will occur. Thanks again
