I actually am sober too...and although I've never seen him at a meeting, I know for a fact he is still very active in his own recovery, goes to meetings in NYC, and he takes it very, very seriously. He's a huge inspiration to me (and obviously millions of others). And to the original comment - YES - it's so awesome that he's alive and well and healthy. It is reflected in how the band is playing...which, in my opinion, is as good as ever.

There is a real wisdom from Trey here. As a graphic designer, you get used to sketching a few initial ideas for a project you are working on. Once, an illustrator challenged me to make 100 sketches for my next project. What a difference! You find that the easy first few ideas are pragmatic, straight-forward, utilitarian, expected. By sketch 70, you are exploring all sorts of off-shoots you would never have originally considered. Creativity comes pouring out. For Trey to make a set list and destroy it before playing is very similar. Get the uninspired ideas out and move on to something better.

That's basically how Vince McMahon writes his live TV show, RAW and SmackDown. Writes Raw Thursday, chops and changes it whenever he's not busy with something else Friday, Saturday, Sunday, then on Monday, a few hours before the show goes live, he rewrites a lot, if not all, of the show. Sometimes writing the last parts of the show while the first is happening. That's a good entertainment show writer, producer, director and whatnot to be compared to, genius level.

His ritual is "throwing out" the set list he spent the whole day working on and just letting the audience guide him with song choices. I've been to hundreds of concerts (over 500) over the years. Several opportunities presented themselves and I found myself "in the right place", "at the right time", i.e., I got to meet several of the "front men" in some of the bans I've "followed on tour". Conversations with them, their band members, other musicians who come to "play with" or just "see" them, and audience members about "best shows" always have to do with "feeling the music", which requures establishing a relationship the audience and tbe band in the/that moment.

Hey Trey, about that ritual before going on stage and seeing the crowd, then deciding what to open the night with. How do you get the vib from that to open a show with the song " My Soul" . maybe its just me but I hate that song. Anything telling you inside your head to play this song needs to be ignored. Along with Brian and Robert and Velvet sea. I saw Phish in the early days. 1992or 93 was my first show. Veteran of 40 something shows from what I consider the best era of phish. but these 3 songs i hated and felt like they were a waste. Songs i like to see a show opened with the most from back in the day? My Friend, 2001 and punch you in the eye.

it's ridiculous to assume that because you dislike some songs that all the other people in the audience will agree. That's what makes seeing Phish fun, the songs you hate I love and vice versa.
