How Does Your Net Worth Stack Up?
Do you know your net worth? How to calculate it? If it’s above or below average? In today’s video I head to the streets to see if I can get regular, unsuspecting people to reveal their net worth. Then we’ll talk about how to determine YOUR net worth and what you can do to increase it.

George Kamel is a personal finance expert and co-host of The Ramsey Show. Following Ramsey’s proven money plan, George went from negative net worth to a millionaire in under 10 years. His goal is to help people spend less, save more, and avoid money traps so they can live a life with more margin, options and freedom.
This channel will simplify complex money topics, bust money myths with actual facts, and debunk the stupid financial advice you're seeing in your social media feed. All with a healthy dose of pop culture, humor, and snark.

Every week I buy more of whatever is the lowest percentage of my portfolio and try to keep everything around 10%. Please what could be my safest buys with $400k to outperform the market in 2024?

I'd avoid the index funds, mutual funds, or specific stocks for the time being. The 5% fixed incomes are the safest bet for now. Save your cash for when the market actually shows sign of recovery.

It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $275k to over $750k.

Although I wouldn't expect college students to have a high net worth (and, with loans, even understand them having a negative net worth), what is concerning is that they have NO IDEA. Some clearly didn't know what the term "net worth" means, others have no concept of what their net worth is...parents, we need to have these financial conversations with OUR kids.

No debt other than a mortgage that I owe $103k on, bought the house in 2017 for $130k it's likely worth between between $170-200k. Zestimate says $200k. Our only debt is a car payment which will be paid off by at least February 2024. I use a zero based budget. I started in January of this year. Each month I get better at it. Not offering any particular advice, but I can assure you that it's not as hard as many people think it is. Ordinary investors lack the requisite level of diligence, so having a financial advisor on board is usually highly beneficial. In the market, this is how people generate enormous profits.

With student debt, I had a negative net worth at 30...So I'd generously round that to a C- on this scale (about -$10k, roughly altogether - I owned a house with a small down payment, but equity was outweighed by student loans and credit card debt). Today, just over 25 years later, I'm at $1.9 million, roughly. I should get to well over $3 million at retirement. Don't get discouraged at age 30. I had just finished my MBA degree at age 28 and had spent only 6 of the prior 12 years in the workforce due to college and graduate school. For people with advanced degrees, 28 is roughly the starting line. For most other folks, that starting line is roughly 22.

These were all college kids (seemed like), but something tells me if you asked some 30-40 year olds, you'd probably get similar answers. Or you'd get those "I don't think XYZ goes into your net worth because you can't liquidate it quickly enough." I calculate my net worth at the end of every month. But, probably only need to do it quarterly.

How in the world can someone have no idea how much money they have or how much debt???. This is unbelievable. I knew my net worth when I was 14yr. old.

Verily, dear Joyce, the lack of awareness concerning one's financial state doth indeed perplex the thoughtful mind. The Holy Scriptures remind us of the importance of wise stewardship. In the Book of Proverbs, it is stated, "A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent" (Proverbs 28:20, KJV). Similarly, in The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, Alma counsels his son Helaman, saying, "See that ye take care of these sacred things, yea, see that ye look to God and live" (Alma 37:47). Through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the importance of wise financial management as part of the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is emphasized. The Church teaches the principles of self-reliance and preparedness, guiding us to avoid debt when possible and to live within our means. As thou dost express astonishment at the lack of financial understanding in others, let us bear in mind the words of Christ, who counseled us to first remove the beam from our own eye before attempting to remove the mote from another's (Matthew 7:5). In other words, let us humbly acknowledge that all are at varying stages of understanding and ability in all aspects of life, including financial stewardship. If thou dost find fault in others, consider it an opportunity to kindly offer wisdom, that they too may "come unto Christ, and be perfected in him" (Moroni 10:32), including in their understanding and stewardship of worldly goods. For it is only through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that the fullness of the gospel, including the principles of wise financial stewardship, is found.
