Barbara Sherman, a board-certified veterinary behavior specialist, is the Director of Behavioral Medicine Service at NC State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to teaching veterinary students, she treats the behavioral problems of companion animals and directs the Behavioral Medicine Residency Training program. In an effort to enhance their welfare, her ongoing research focuses on canine-human communication and the assessment and attenuation of fear responses in dogs and cats.

dogs are not capable of love. Dogs were also not created by god. They are not natural animals. They were bred from wolves by humans. The only reason they hung around humans and lost their fear of humans is because they were scavenging for food scraps and also they love to eat human feces. (and any feces, including their own) Dogs don't feel guilt, or therefore love. Dogs attack people 5 million times per year. Nothing could be further from being a deity. Dogs are demons.

Oh yes! Our golden retriever, Jake, who had us completely trained. I took him to the beach everyday, we took him out fishing in his boat all summer, we walked him, we bathed him after every trip to the beach, I fed him from the table because he would just sit there looking at me with drool to the floor, he road in the back of his trick so he could jump out and chased geese in the fall when they made their treck back south. When my children got jealous I reminded them that the dog didn't talk back. 🤣🤣🤣

I just viewed a youtube about unpleasant emotions and how our bodies experience a neurophysical sensation (which we may or may not be aware of) before we actually experience the unpleasant emotion (such as anxiety). It's curious and I'm wondering if dogs tune in to that physical aspect, even if we don't, and they can anticipate something is coming. I think cats might even do this more often. It makes me wonder if the canine and feline species are more aware than humans. They really are amazing creatures with intelligence we often can't begin to to understand.

@@karenumezawa3471 I think you're absolutely correct that animals know things are coming before humans do, in fact in places that have hurricanes/ tsunamis animals give warnings and they even have hotlines people can call if their animal is acting weird plus I believe dogs can even spot/ smell if their human has cancer... It's truly amazing! Once before there was an earthquake, which is rare where I live, my dog came and laid down by me and a little while later my plants were swaying all over the place and there was an earthquake! My dog knew ☺️

I just lost my dog 12/06/19 from Spleen cancer and internal bleeding. My life feels empty with him gone. I'm retired and the two of just sat in this house while I watched KZbin videos for over 3 years. This is the 3rd dog I've lost and every time it just kills me. How many loved pets can I endure to lose? Now, I'm trying to learn everything I can about dogs. I'll be getting another one soon as I honestly believe that dogs help extend the lives of their owners. Dogs were put here for the purpose of teaching us how to love one another and I've learned that life is not worth living without a dog. I'll enjoy a little freedom for a while as I always tried my best to give my dog the very best of everything I could afford. Like all the other friends before, I'll be getting my dog from the pound and not the pet shop. I'd like to find a 1 or 2 year old that's already house broken. I'd also like to find one that's just as happy being outside for the afternoon as being inside. My last best friend was a hundred pounds but he was strictly an inside dog, which meant every time I left the house I'd worry about a friend at home that didn't have a thumb to let himself out. So, this spring I'm going to build a dog house that's heated, airconditioned and has plenty of room so my next best friend can hopefully be looking in my eyes when I take my last breath.-----------------------------------------------All you people that have dogs, treasure them and don't beat them if they have an accident in the house, if they do, it's your fault for not walking them or letting them out. They're precious and a gift from GOD, if you don't believe me, spell GOD backwards and see what it gives you.

I can not believe that the parents couldn't understand why the dog was getting upset. I was raised on a farm around all sorts of animals, when I was a baby I was introduced to dog's, cat's, horses, cowes and bird's. I was taught to ask permission from the owner before approaching an animal, I was taught not to pull their ears, tail or fur, and I was taught never to hit them like that boy was, or corner them again like the little boy was doing or restrain them, like he was trying to do. I am not blaming the child at all, he didn't know any better and just wanted to play, but it is in situations like that where children get attacked and mauled, and then people blame the dog and it gets euthanased.

I held my breath through that entire clip of the little boy & dog interacting!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s incredibly frustrating to watch a parent allow their child to be in that situation & equally as upsetting to watch a dog give every “warning” sign to the owner that says, “I’m not comfortable, make it stop!” Not always, but often it’s scenarios similar to that one, when a dog does bite/snap/growl & a child gets hurt or scared. Then, the poor dog gets blamed/punished. 😔 When it was totally AVOIDABLE!!! It’s not the child’s fault, they don’t understand boundaries or see potential danger at that age. Parents have to be the ones to teach, set boundaries, and be proactive. I can’t stand when parents let their kids hit/grab pets, put their face in a dog’s face, aggravate them, and then if or when the pet reacts, they’re treated like a monster. Ummm Noooo... let’s do all of that to you & see how you react! Please teach your kids to be kind to animals, to respect them & their space, to play appropriately, etc. If you’re a new dog, cat, bird, hamster, rabbit owner...educate yourself FIRST on what the animal needs. It will allow your family & your pets to have a far better relationship. ❤️

I got a puppy to help with ptsd issues. I never get angry now because doing so is very reflective in my dogs. Seeing them in fear of me being emotional has help me to know and understand myself. Unfortunately many people who get a pet, take their anger out on the pet, instead of dealing with their own underlying issues. On a further note, those same people abuse their wife and children as well. Thanks for posting.

I think that this is an important add on. My 2 year old brother awoke our German Shepard out of a dream & the dog bit his face & he had to have 22 stitches & nearly lost his eye. Children need to be taught to give a dog it's space on sleeping, eating & just general alone time. Please be safe with your child & give your dog it's space!!!

My Lucy I love her so much I rescued her from a bad home. God sent her to me I'm so blessed. Turns out she has addison disease. That's unusual in young dogs, shes only a year and a half. It cost over 300 a month for her shots to keep her alive. The person that had her would have put her down. I'm so glad I found her she is pure love.

I’m a human being with Addison’s I want to thank you for taking care of your precious Lucy It’s an incredibly difficult disease and it affects every aspect of existence I’m so glad i that you found each other💖 if she needs additional medications to help with the Addison’s as she grows into adulthood rather than putting her through pills and more shots see if there is a compounding pharmacy where you can take the prescription from your vet and have the medication changed into a Tasty treat or a simple cream you could rub on the inside of her ears or on her belly where there’s no fur (hope this helps you and Lucy)

Hi Roy. I just had to put my beautiful dog down on Dec 12. She was 10 and half. Devastated. My heart shattered. I live alone and Carson was my whole world. She had Addison's from young age and needed prednisone pill daily. In the last 16 months of her life I was also paying that amount monthly to keep her alive. Vet commended me saying most folks wouldn't do that. I'm shocked as I would cut my arm off with a dull butter knife if it meant more time with Carson. Good for you that you're doing same for "Lucy" and I wish you both a long healthy life. May you Enjoy every second!

I'm glad you showed a positive way for parents to work out a relationship between the toddler and dog, but more could be said about the teachability of children from an early age. Years ago my brother, who had some experience as a dog trainer, taught his young daughters that when their little terrier went into his crate or when he was eating nobody was to bother him. This worked very well, and the dog caught on quickly that he could go there when he wanted a break. For their own safety, children have to learn to respect animals. Many dogs would not be as tolerant as that JRT.

Yawning is an anxiety behavior in humans also. When I worked as a court reporter/stenographer, I would see people yawning during their court hearings. I used to think this was rude. I didn't understand how this person could not be in a more alert or hyper-vigilant state of mind during such a profound time in their life. In reality this human is so stressed they're exhausted.

I learned so much. I can always tell when my dogs are anxious but I don’t know how to manage it. I moved in a building and my docile dog became very anxious and aggressive because of the other dogs being anxious/aggressive/playful. I’ll have to find ways to calm her, especially in the elevators.

I totally agree! Dogs that turn aggressive could be a sign that their environment and owners are not providing the right care. I 100% believe that if you want to raise pets, humans need education and understand what it takes to raise animals and I'm not talking KZbin videos or talking to other humans who have raised animals. In some countries, if you want a dog, you have to take an intensive course. It's a requirement. And, while that may mean more dogs in shelters, it's worse to be neglected and abused by a bad human.

I loathe it whilst walking my dogs in town, when strangers just walk over to them and pat them without warning. One day, after just passing a shop entrance, a woman burst out and patted one of my dog's rear end. He spun round to see what was going on. Fortunately he is the most placid of dogs and loves people, so he just accepted what had happened. But he could have reacted in an aggressive way, after all, he didn't know this woman's intentions. If he had bitten her, he would have been labelled a dangerous dog and his life expectancy could have been shortened dramatically. We need to treat animals with respect, sadly, as I have a number of rescued dogs, I know that this is not always the case.

I have a deaf therapy dog and she has more intuition than most dogs, because she must pick up on smells too besides just sight and hearing. With her the rapid approach doesn't bother her but she must pick up on a persons personality or attitude during visits because she just doesn't like some people. Being an animal biologist I find it very interesting what my little deaf pup will pick up on during visits to the hospital ICU's and what she knows without telling her what is going on.

I have a rescue pit bull no one could go near him. After 7 years together I can vouch for him when I say he is the most controlled and gentle dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Ooops, sent before I finished. Anyway, understanding Grey's a bit, we were so happy to adopt him. We teach the children in our family (Grands) about properly respecting dogs from age 2 and always supervise. Today he loves and is so gentle with children, and they adore him, as we all do !

You can see some of these same expressions in humans when they encounter someone who is agressive or forward in their approach (albeit, the anxious person doesn't crawl under a chair to get away, buuuut, they may want to). The eyes exhibit a shy, fearful, darting or looking-away expression, their posture becomes stiff or they may keep some distance or shift their foot position like they want to leave the presence of the person who is making them anxious/nervous/wary. On the other hand, if the person is a good friend or even a stranger but exhibits non-threatening cues (or is an "open" person), then the other person relaxes, may shift closer to the person, engage in light banter or reveal a difficulty they are struggling with. It's all in the eyes, voice, body cues. People tell you more about themselves than they realize, and an attentive person will pick up on the subtle cues and correct or adjust themselves properly (whether to disengage or continue).

It's amazing that humans understand so little about dogs. It's really not brain surgery. I used to train dogs as a part time job and honestly I never worked with a dog that I didn't have success with. The owners on the other hand were almost always failures at learning to handle the dog once trained. Most people should not be allowed to own dogs. Let them have cats. I became so disgusted with dog owners I quit training except for my own dogs.

And correct the dog when needed. Aggression is never permissible. Balanced training saves millions of dog lives all over the world. If that's honestly her with the aggressive dog wearing the prong collar, she clearly has no idea how to even use the prong collar if the behavior did not stop. Even simply looking at the photo, the collar should be higher near the ears, because the dog is less sensitive further down. Anyone could find a proper prong collar training video on KZbin, it's so simple and kills the behavior in an instant when used properly. e-collar training is even better.

I have warned so many people about my dog....but they love dogs and approached her wrong. Straight to her face and then put their faces in her face and were surprised that my dog would attack. I always ask them what they would do if a stranger would approach them this way. As long one respect dogs and give them time and let them come up to them, there is no problem.

I adopted my dog from a shelter. He has serious behavior problem, as previously he lived as a stray dog. He was fearful and aggressive at the same time with dogs and mostly with humans. (When he lived on the streets he had no pack, no protection, no food, no shelter, so he got in trouble with dogs and humans). I soon realized if I want to rehabilitate my dog I have to understand all of his signals. It was a long process, but now he is a calm, socialized dog. I also realized if I want change, first I have to learn, and change, than I can teach him. The little guy and and the jack russel video for me was a terrible video with a terrible solution. First of all, the dog has to accept any approach to his food with submissive reaction. Second of all, the kid was aware that he should respect the private space of the dog. All in all the man behind camera did a bad teaching with both of them, but to be frank the jack russel did a better job. In my opinion the gate is not a solution. To teach dog about the structure of the pack and to to teach the kid, to understand the dog would be the solution.

Thanks! I have two three-year-old dogs & a third one who's thirteen years old, all neutered. The younger ones weigh 25 & 35 kg while the older one weighs 45 kg. I walk, with one of the two young ones, for an hour+ every day. It's most interesting to see how dogs behave with one another. Owners who are friendly tend to have friendly dogs. The dogs lick their face, sniff their rear end while I chit-chat with their owner. Great way to meet nice people :) By the way, I watched your KZbin with my dogs & they told me that you look tense! Maybe, although most competent, you don't enjoy that much speaking in front of large audiences... Are they right ???

There is no question this little boy could have received instruction around respect for the family dog, however, Barbara Sherman did not include the video segment as a means to invite debate on this subject. The video demonstrates canine behaviour, and what that behaviour is meant to communicate. We are well-advised to remember that all behaviour has meaning. No matter the animal, behaviour has meaning. We put a board to give the dog privacy as it ate. The skidding noise of the board was post food triggered the dog. It began to growl if you approached the board. Eventually the territorial nature became the room between the garage and basement (utility room). This was literally the thoroughfare. It was a sheepdog. It eventually bit everybody in the family. So, I roll my eyes every time I hear of crate training. In the wild, dogs will find a place. My dog currently sleeps with me, and doesn’t always stay put throughout the night, but I believe enjoys the freedom of being protected and being protector and May roam the house to check out noises etc. sometimes she looks at me and I need to tell her “go do your job.” She is older now, now it is my turn, mostly.

I have had dogs my whole life. My parents have a photo of me around 2 years of age asleep on the grass of the backyard with our German shepherd wrapped around me. I think because of the very early experience I’ve learnt a lot about dogs. My neighbours upstairs in an apartment above me, we met in the lift one day and they had their Labrador with them. This was the first time I met their dog. I interacted with the dog in the lift talking and patting it. As I got out of the lift the dog was trying to come out and follow me. The owners looked at me and said she never does that. I said it is a life long love of dogs and being able to communicate with them. However it doesn’t happen with every dog. As with people you don’t connect with every person you meet. Dogs in my opinion are very important for humans and vice versa.

Always good to understand that animals live in the physical world and communicate through visual clues but also that all dogs are different in their response to a given situation as are people. Many generalities apply to all but any given dog like people react differently to the same situation. What works for one , may not work for another.

I had a 1 month old dog for about a week, my mom rehomed he cause i was a little allergic to it and she doesn’t like the smell of the house. But in those few days, i fell in love with him, he was the sweetest and most energetic dog I’ve ever met. An hour before giving it away, it sinked in my brain what i was actually doing, I’m giving away MY dog. I cried and hugged his little body and kissed his head, i was so heartbroken. As if knowing that I’m really sad, he lick my neck for awhile and snuggled with me. I don’t know what he’s doing right now, but i know he’s safe with my friends family. I won’t visit him though, cause it hurts just by thinking that he won’t remember me anymore. It’s been a month, and I wanna visit him so badly. I’m still in grief. (Sorry for my english)

Haha, for the first couple of minutes I thought you had an extremely well trained dog! Yikes, that dog with the kid, poor thing! Teach the kid to let the dog eat by himself! Unbelievable that the father would let this kid harass the poor dog, and film it. The dog is amazing that he did not react negatively. So glad you said they had set up an area where the space to get into it was just big enough for the dog if it wanted to be alone to eat or rest by itself. Whew. What a great learning tool! This would be fabulous for people who are introducing a new pet into the home, particularly if they have children or regularly have guests. The gate would not only give the pooch a place to eat and drink in peace, but it would also be good for the pooch because it would know that it always has another option as opposed to needing to use the private space. Often it's just enough to know that we have another option that makes a situation less threatening or stressful than actually using it.

why didn't they discipline the child??? they could see that the dog was getting upset??? maybe somebody should stand behind the dad and just keep hitting him on the back while he's trying to eat see how far it gets, or maybe grab the dad's necklace and try to whip him around to play with him, yank on his neck. unacceptable, you teach the kid to respect the animal and in turn the animal will respect him.

Because it was made with the purpose to show a very clear example on how a certain dog in a certain family responds and the parents/owners overlooked what the most logical solution is in these. You as an outsider are clearly seeing it... But trust me, apparently, being IN the situation makes people have a blind spot and they get then lost on the obvious. So... this video is actually a very perfect example of what many dogtherapists get... and it is one of the ultimate great sorts since you get to see the entire story and reactions... If you have to pull it out of owners never having video material like this... trust me... owners have tendencies to leave out like 80% of very important material which may lead (and will lead) to making the wrong conclusions and drawing up the wrong therapy to solve the problem. And yes... belief it or not... it happens very often.

I have read some of the comments about the dog, an animal is in no way human! Don't expect it to be human. Show a dog love by all means but it's go to sense is pack mentality, it will follow pack master. The three year old is in need of training more than dog. We humans can wake up on the wrong side of the bed so can dogs or cats. Be mindful of this. Don't hit dogs a stern warning is more important. Like humans animals crave attention and affection.

A very good video, it shows just how much our dogs try to convey to us if only we pay attention. I have a three year old goldy with the nicest temprament you could ask for. Because I have had him from eight weeks old, he really does know just what i want from him and how much I am prepared to give. Going to the vets is not only something that he actually likes, but I think enjoys ( nhe knows where the treats are in the treatment room) . I have been very lucky having had three golden retrievers, when my last one died I thought i might not get another as age is not on my side, but i found that life was no fun without my pal, And after six mounths I found The one I have now,,,, he made the first move and we have not looked back since that day. He is smart to the point of being too smart for his own good, opens doors and windows, gos crazy for children, to the point he would make a good baby sitter. I think learning to read your dog is so important, amnd something so many people never take the time to do. A good video that should really be shown to those who contemplate getting a dog, it would save the dog from some real hard knocks that so many dogs are put through.

We have a stubborn dachshund, but he is clever at communicating. If he is hungry he will grab his favorite toy and shake it (something in the mouth). If he wants something particular he stands where he is used to getting it...or under where he can smell it. So with careful attention you know when he wants chicken or cheese, chocolate (I know, he likes it anyway), a chew toy, or a bit of sausage. If upstairs and he wants help getting down if I ask do you want to go downstairs and he will stand in front of me to be picked up. If he doesn't he, goes under the bed or a chair. When downstairs and wants to go out he will stand under a coat on the back of the chair. Basically he uses his body position to communicate very specific​ things that he wants.

My dogs were NOT watching the video on my smart phone, but they knew from the sounds coming through the phone that there was danger during the video of the Jack Russell Terrier. They were growling and barking and saying WATCH OUT! My dogs told me that the child and dog were in a terrible situation. Dad is lucky (dog is even luckier) that the child came through OK!

My two grandaughters got a havanese puppy when they were 7 and 5. The 7 year old could understand why we told them to let him eat and rest in peace - not the 5 year old. We created a playpen like area with bed, bowls and a few toys in it. His 'peace place'. We put it in an open space under the counter in the kitchen. Very secure 'cave' from which he could look out and watch the family. Did it work? To an extent - the only problem was the 5 year old kept climbing into the peace area, getting in the dogs bed and even sampling his food. She wanted to bond with him but didn't know how. Result: the dog did not trust her for several years. Now she loves dogs, relates to them and they to her. Her little dog still watches her to make sure she doesn't revert to her old behaviors. Dogs don't forget!
