A lot of this is Russia getting into the rink - pretty much after 2014. That is after the Maidan Revolution - and what Putin viewed as western “meddling” in Ukraine. Before then he was mostly focused on weakening the EU but I think from 2014 on we became his number one (target that is). That’s when we first started to detect the contours of a global right wing effort as well - mostly based on online agitation and shady “energy” deals etc. with developing nations. China has been really big in that space as well, by essentially providing loans to nations in the developing world - for political influence. Combined, these and other methods form the basis of our 21st century version of imperialism. Very popular around the world - especially with the pre-existing “death to America” crowd. Nukes, economic interests (oil/gas & market share/currency aspirations) and a patriarchal outlook helps to unite the members of this new “Axis” as well. Note: patriarchy is the great uniter of our times - how progressive, right? Lol. It seems religious/ideological differences matter not when the goal is the preservation and expansion of the patriarchy and the economic/social advantages it brings to some. Rights, democracy and equality be damned.

Attention leads to more reportong and moderation of content that violates platform rules. Fact checking is treating the symptoms vs the cause. The cause of misinformation is the algorithm metastasizing the radical content. We need to regulate the algorithms.

Sometimes it’s the lack of messaging still. I moved back home to Ohio in December and I see right wing ads way more regularly now. Democrats act like Ohio is very red when it’s really not. They are killing their chances in future elections by doing this. While writing this, I got an ad from THE SENTINEL ACTION FUND that links to the ohiosos.gov page for requesting an absentee ballot. In the ad there is a clip of Trump saying to vote with specific emphasis on voting by mail. Which is incredibly misleading. Trump and Republicans have stated several times that they don’t want vote by mail. I also cannot recall seeing any ads targeting the left with such a simple call to action.

The problem isn't the disinformation being spread. The problem is voters actually hate the candidates for real complex issues, but the disinformation is an easy talking point to just quickly move past the subject. You can try to argue facts, but there are reasons for why each candidate is horrible to a voter, that no amount of talking points is going to bring them back. Voters don't like the status quo of Democrats sucking up to corporate interests. Voters don't like voting in a candidate to combat some certain aspect of government, but then seeing their candidate capitulate to the same system they want to see changed. It's the disingenuous politician that voters hate, which is why they love Trump. He may be a shit bag lying scammer, but he never said he wasn't. He's an authentic shit bag lying scammer, and that gives voters confidence.

The internet/forums in 2007-2008 were a lot more liberal. But the GOP realized this and funded trolls and commenters to just repost and share the same thing over and over again until people thought that was the way a large portion of Americans thought. The Democrat campaigns failed big time with their “offline is better, anti-tech bro” plan.

Wait, Why doesn't this administration bring back the 2015-2016 Obama-Biden memes?

Is that a bird on his head?🤣 A little distracting. Still looking forward to listening to (Audible) to his new book.

Is anyone else distracted by the silver eagle coming out of the top of Sasha's head in the full face camera view? Don't know who set-up the background but they messed that up!

How much of the viewing imbalance is due to the fact that, while "conservatives" tend to seek out only their own kind, "liberals" (tell me you're a Canuck without telling me) want to check out at least *some* of the other side's opinions?

Excellent...timeless evolution of communication;posit:" 'it' is NOT 'it'; 'it' is 'that' which WE will to do. so our "tech." ways&means happens sooner than we may have "prepared"(w/or w/out SUBSTSANCE);😊 "sooner"

Really great episode. I loved the conversation about focusing on the underlying issue rather than spending endless time taking on ever recurring sources of negative information sounds like a novel strategy. Almost immunizing people against disinformation; so, regardless of sources it will be ineffective on them. "Baseline map" idea also reminds me a lot of medicine. Important to know the "normal" state of ones body to be able to identify important changes.

Loved this fascinating conversation, especially comparing and contrasting Obama's campaign and current practices. Thank you!
