How Donny van de Beek Will Fit into Solskjaer’s Manchester United taking a look at Starting XI, Formation & Tactics. Following the transfer of Donny van de Beek to Manchester United on the 2nd September 2020, we take a look at his playing style, what he’ll bring to the club and where Ole Gunnar Solskjær will likely use him.

After breaking into the Ajax first team under Frank de Boer & establishing himself under Peter Bosz, it was under Erik ten Hag when Donny van de Beek became one of the best players in the side. He was integral in the 2018/19 Champions League run to the semi-final, scoring against both Juventus and Spurs and putting in a huge display against Real Madrid. During his time at Ajax, the Netherlands international was directly involved in over 70 goals in just 175 appearances and has played in every midfield position.
Van de Beek is a highly intelligent footballer and this influences his playing style. Not blessed with lightning pace or an athletic physique, van de Beek outthinks his opposition to great effect. Often using his excellent off the ball movement to get into goalscoring positions before using his outstanding technical ability to finish off moves. His relationship with Chelsea new boy, Hakim Ziyech saw him look for the Moroccan frequently, allowing him to do the flashy stuff whilst the Dutchman did the important jobs.
Despite experience playing in a double pivot for Ajax, van de Beek is definitely at his best in a freer role, either at number 8 or number 10. This means he’ll likely compete with Paul Pogba & Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford if Ole persists with a 3 man midfield. What I’d love to see however, is a switch to a 4-4-2 diamond, a shape Solskjær has used to great effect, dispatching Spurs, Leicester City, Arsenal & Chelsea with the shape in the past. This would allow van de Beek to play in his favoured number 10 position, without forcing Pogba or Fernandes into defensive positions. Whilst playing behind wide forwards in Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford would create space for van de Beek to exploit.
All in all, the signing of Donny van de Beek is an excellent one. In the current market, a 23 year old, full international with Champions League experience would usually fetch more than the 40 million plus add ons it cost to bring van de Beek to the club. And with his best years ahead of him, I expect him to have a long and successful career at Manchester United.

Very rarely do a team have a fixed on first XI that starts every single week. We were unusual end of last season for having that. De Beek and Sancho would add so much versatility to the squad, we could line up in a number of ways as and when needed. So Donny - starting ahead of a midfield pivot including either Pogba or Bruno; in a midfield diamond; as an 8; right midfield of 4222/442/3 at the back system; or if absolutely necessary right of front 3. But generally as a rotation player, surely....

i too think if you want to play VDB as a starter with pogba and bruno no doubt you have to switch to a midfield diamond whether thats in 4-4-2 or 3-4-3 if they want to incorporate sancho and reguilon as the rumours suggest they are trying to buy though personally i dont think reguilon is that much better than shaw when it comes to defensive capabilities as we saw shaw absolutely kill that LCB kinda role in a 3 ma defense whenever it was used last season

@@vyomthakkar1011 I honestly think a 3-4-3 won't work for Utd. Using that with Shaw shall AWB or Lindelof to be benched. Perhaps, if Sancho joins, they'll probably use a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 to retain defensive solidity. Moreover, don't forget that Utd have 55-60 games next season, so even if VDB is 'benched', he'll still manage over 35 games next season, which is good given that he needs to adapt to the PL.

I see VDB as a a quality cover for Pogba and Bruno. -If either gets injured he comes into the starting XI -he comes in as an impact sub when they are playing weaker team and need to win the game -he comes in to relieve Bruno or Pogba -4/4/2 diamond not happening because we're getting Sancho -in champions league game weeks 1 of Bruno or Pogba would need to rest in the PL or vice versa -In conclusion, VDB's role would be either a Box to Box midfielder cover with a DM to cover him or as an Attacking midfield cover

*If* Ole wants all 3 on the pitch I think the diamond would be best but I've been saying for a couple seasons now that if they are not going to play McTominay at CDM, we need a new one asap. I'd even argue that if we had a quality younger CDM to protect the back line, we may not need a CB this window. Matic was really good last season when he was fit but his legs are pretty much gone.

I see him as being Pogba's replacement / rotation in some games or someone to throw on when facing stubborn opposition when we're chasing the winner. It just seems like people are afraid to state that VDB is Fernandes' switch partner. If Man Utd are going to make any headway, they need to start honestly start acknowledging that the team game requires ruthless execution. I reckon he's come in so that if or when Pogba leaves we don't have a big hole in midfield. In the meantime Ole has to keep them all happy somehow. Not sure if you can break up a front three with a proven 60+ goals a season in them. Interesting season coming up. 4-3-1-2 is the most feasible for the 3 to play together. 4-3-3 with Bruno and VdB flanking Pogba is also feasible because of Bruno's and VdB's work rate and positional intelligence. Not week in week out. 4-2-3-1 with Bruno being the Raumdeuter or Wide Playmaker on the right is also an option especially against deep blocks with AWB and Shaw pushing high

Quality off the bench and giving competition to Bruno/Pogba. It's what we all want. Not sure we will be comfortable with a 3 at the back this season as our main formation.

Personally. I don’t think Ole will change his system, think he’ll just stuck to what work last season and you’ll just a see a rotation between Bruno Pogba and Donny. I think he’ll start Donny next to Pogba but he’ll have the freedom that when he gets the ball he can play into either of the attackers and carry on his run. Cos a lot of times last season Bruno was found out wide or near the half way line picking up the ball so I think you’ll find Donny wherever Bruno should b the in the attack.

So basically he is not replacing Matic/Fred/Mctonamy but supporting Bruno and Pogba when they need it. He is now above Mata/Lingard/Perreira on the list. Sancho now is key. It means we have extra power upfront, Grennwood can rotate more between left wing and central forward. And can be the s2nd striker behind Martial and infront of Ighalo. Sancho can go left or right wing. We probably now need an extra leftback and a 3th striker and a CB. Willson goes on the right supporting AWB. GK possition is set and heated up. Long bench is key. We need that, season is long.
