Today we’ll be looking at why Julian Nagelsmann is the best young manager in world football, and why he could cause Manchester United problems when they meet in the UEFA Champions League.
At the age of just 33, Julian Nagelsmann is one of the most sought after managers in world football and especially after taking his side to a Champions League semi-final last season.

Let’s have a look at how it all started for the RB Leipzig coach. Who knew that a serious, playing-career ending injury combined with the opportunity to scout opposition for Thomas Tuchel would be the foundations for one of the best young managers in the game. When he was appointed as Hoffenheim’s head coach in October 2015, Nagelsmann became the youngest permanent manager in Bundesliga history and since then has proven himself to be one of, if not the biggest managerial prospect
During his time as Leipzig manager he’s used a variety of shapes and systems from back four’s to back three’s and has even created hybrid systems that defend with a back four and attack with a back three and vice versa.
Regardless of what Nagelsmann uses, his principles remain in place: high pressing, vertically progressive, attacking football. And his tactical changes aren’t just to cover for unavailable players, they’re to exploit or even to create weaknesses in his opposition. And Nagelsmann does this against some of the best defences in Europe.
We’ll use Atletico Madrid as an example. Simeone’s men have been one of the best defensively drilled sides for the past five years and shut down Jurgen Klopp’s free scoring Liverpool in the previous round. Nagelsmann however broke Atleti’s system. Setting up in a 4-2-3-1, Leipzig would defend in this shape but with possession, it would revert to a 3-4-2-1.
These tactics not only offered four players in central areas who both pinned and outnumbered Atletico’s defenders when Leipzig had possession, but without the ball, Leipzig could deal with overlapping full backs with their wingers whilst they outnumbered Atletico centrally. Nagelsmann created this variation in shape through two key players, the right winger, Marcel Sabitzer who’d move inside and the right central midfielder, Konrad Laimer, who would move outside.
This not only made great use of Laimer’s energy and ball winning ability as he was able to cover Atleti’s counter attacks down his flank, but it got Leipzig’s four most technical footballers, Sabitzer as we’ve mentioned, Olmo, Kampl and Nkunku, who are the most press resistant into central areas. Allowing the Germans to dominate possession in those areas.

While your talking about tactics, which of course is important. You also touched on an important point about getting the best out of players. I think he has a natural flair for getting the best out of players. Whether it be seeing things that other managers hadn't or just being able to understand the player better. I think it also says a lot about the players involved having the desire to play in positions that maybe weren't exactly known for which of course reflects on the kind of manager he is. Nagelsmann is still young and has a lot to learn. It sounds stupid but his 5-0 mauling will make him a better manager. He has that kind of personality to learn and adapt new things. During his time in Hoffenheim he did a lot of experiments. Fall hard on the ground but still...they were very good. Give him 5 more years and he can archieve anything with big teams like Bayern, Madrid or Barca. The squad quality is the best of the best -- opening him new tactical flexibility.

I'm a huge fan of Nagglesmann and especially the RB football style philosophy (Rangnick, Hassenhuttl have both had hugely entertaining & highly tactical sides within the RB model), but to effectivley label him as great now is a bit of a stretch. His side in the ruckrunde in 2019/20 fell off a cliff and almost missed out the UCL... one day he may go onto be the best but there are a number of areas which need to be improved upon first of all..... also Leipzig PPDA would indicate that they didnt press high, rather set in a midblock to allow for space in behind for Werner (last year) to be able to counter into...

@@matrixxx3662 i'm still not sold ole has been doing phenomenally recently but i need him to be consistent over the course of the szn. don't think he's been particularly poor enough to get sacked but i don't think we can win anything with ole and if our form dips for an extended period again this szn i think ole needs to go if we have a shot at pochettino rose or nagelsmann

@@nicklarsen5296 Poch Isn't stupid enough to come to a board that sets him for another failure. So forget about him. And consistency takes time like everything else. Ole can't use a system and stick to It. He needs to have more options. And that's what he is doing. That's also what Nagelsmann Is doing. Nagelsmann is a great coach like any other but not as loyal as Ole.

@@matrixxx3662 totally agree that ole needs to test different systems i haven't loved his 4231 for us to be honest but it's moreso the inconsistent results vs tottenham and palace, and generally like the chelsea game in the fa cup, just need to see consistent results
