This is exactly what I was thinking of when I commented on your post with Mark about it’s terrible UIUX in the block editor. Why can’t we have nice things things like this in WordPress core?
@dima_storozhukАй бұрын
Lol. Because you need to cleanup a Wordpress core and philosophy first. Clean should be clean, no HTML/js/css soup. Open Source must be open source, not a mix of free sometimes useless functions and paid subscriptions from the plugins which always trying to build their own ecosystem inside the Wordpress and interfere/compete with other plugins.

looks like drupal still heavy developer-oriented. that was their mistake and they still on it :) but their new dashboard looks sexy compare to old one holy looks so nice.

They are releasing a separate version of Drupal which will be more designer/page builder oriented but in general yes, ease of use has never been the strongest part of Drupal

You should look at the new "Experience Builder" initiative for Drupal. I'm not kidding when I say that it looks like Figma for a CMS.

This is a great idea and format! I'm already a fan of this series-count me in. I haven't used it in ages either. It's very powerful, but certainly not as direct and simple to use as the Create Content Model. I believe much of this could be accomplished in the block editor, as seen in the prototype, and with loops in a pattern (which is also kind of a view). We are missing filters, categories, etc., and we could get close while keeping it simple.

Thanks, Max! Looking forward to making more of these.

If I came from different CMS, saw Drupal and WP for first time, looking at those build-in custom fields & design, it would be Drupal all the way. Luckily I have the money for Bricks + ACF Pro/JetEngine, but otherwise Drupal would be the logical choice. When trying to get something slightly more advanced done in WP, it often feels like you're jerry-rigging something together with multiple plugins 😅

@dima_storozhukАй бұрын
You’re right. Very nice to see this opinion. I don’t understand why WP is so popular while it is non-free (i am talking about all this paid subscription in WP plugins). Probably people are so lazy trying to educate themselves, and usually just follow simpler way to buy a plugin. Which actually can work for small websites (it doesn’t mean that it will not cause the problems in future), but as today’s solution it can work.
@nickm1049Ай бұрын
@@dima_storozhuk I think in past the initial growth to dominance came from the 5 min install, then the 1 click installs that hosts offered + the big plugin ecosystem. Back then as an affiliate marketer I could spin up blogs so fast compared to other CMS and I didn't care about design customization much....later years making sites for clients, I would like a better CMS 😃

I haven’t used Drupal in ages. The admin experience looks way more modern. I think WordPress could be shifting this direction a bit with the newer admin UI and data views. I think the post/page editing experience could benefit from this cleaner, one panel approach. What got me really intrigued is the table view builder. That would be amazing to create something like that out of posts. I know you could achieve the layout with core blocks, but it’s not the same as a table. That’s pretty cool. Next episode: Joomla 😅. Is that still a thing?

Very interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing more. I see no good reason why WordPress can’t offer basic custom fields and post types. Also, the UI is much better.

I like this series idea. From working at multiple college/universities that use Drupal instead of WordPress I suspect this may be why they use it?!? I always found editing more annoying and limited as someone w limited access but if they want a user to have only limited "insert some text here" format, where custom post/page types are all identically formatted, maybe admins deciding to buy the tool find it clearer for their use case out of the box? (Of course that can be accomplished w WordPress).

The nice menu of Drupal ist the same system as the "classic WP Admin". I even prefer the WP one, because of the dark color of the menu. Helps focusing on the bright main content. The block editor interface with to many sidebars and panels are hard to use. Never used Drupal: Can you save this content types to file to version it?
@WPMinute3 ай бұрын
Unsure if they have more advanced stuff you can do with it.
@koffer3 ай бұрын
you can export all the configuration to yaml files and import to another drupal installation, and you can find some modules to install a specific yaml configuration, and in this moment people are working with a module called Recipes to export and import more complex and specific functionalty liked to content types.
@24AheadDotCom3 ай бұрын
What koffer said, plus you can create content types in code. Drupal has the concept of "entities", which are a generalized object covering content types, users, taxonomy terms (categories), etc. Minor issue: I'd call the new type "Home", not "Homes" (unless it represents a set of homes).
@TobiasKarnetzke4 ай бұрын
I wish WordPress would get a minimal UI similar to this.

Also, how you use body as a field WordPress should do the same thing, the classic editor could be a field, and the block editor could be a field that you could choose at will

I wouldn't say Drupal puts WP to shame. It's def nice it has these cms features built-in, but the overall theming, plugin, and publishing experience is far better in WP IMO.

Kevin beat me to the views… a similar concept exists in Toolset but it’s magic area gives you a full editor for html markup, css, js and conditional logic. I notice that the fields are tied to the CPT while in other Wordpress equivalents custom fields can be broken down into groups and allied to more than one post type.

@blairwadman87983 ай бұрын
Views is really handy for simple to moderate queries. When you get to advanced queries, sometimes it's still easier to do it in code. But you can also extend views in code when you need to.
@24AheadDotCom3 ай бұрын
Views is a query builder that also frees you from a lot of hassle relating to displaying things. You can have different displays in the same view, like one for admins and the other for visitors: admin users would see more info. You can add relationships to other items. For instance, in a list of nodes you can also display info on the author of the node. It can output in different formats: as an HTML page, as RSS, as JSON, etc. And, as blairwadman8798 says you can change the queries in code. In addition, you can write your own plugins for views, for instance some sort of custom proximity search could be added to the query via a plugin.
