Appeal to Authority: "All mathematicians agree that 2+2=5. Are you a mathematician? Where did you get your degree? No you can't cite a source from that mathematician, he's not respected within the community and I don't care what his arguments are and I don't care that he went on Joe Rogan. You haven't told me where you got your mathematics degree from yet!"
@ravingsofa...6

An appeal to authority would be: Check out this guy. Him saying 2+2 = 5 is correct because he’s an mathematician despite it not being supported by mathematics.
@matyasfekete8341
@matyasfekete8341 2 жыл бұрын
You are the one appealing to authority. Just because he is a mathematician and went on Joe Rogan, doesn't mean he is right. Him being the only mathematician saying what he says is a pretty strong indicator that he is most likely wrong.
@rc0ll18
@rc0ll18 2 жыл бұрын
An appeal to authority is basing an argument on the basis that somebody more qualified made a claim as opposed to an informed examination of the evidence. Saying 2+2=4 on the basis that a mathematician went on Joe Rogan and said so is an appeal to authority. Denying the mathematician's claim on the basis that 2 mathematicians say 2+2=5 and no other argument is also an appeal to authority. Whether 2+2 equals 4 or 5 is based on evidence, not consensus. Expert opinion is useful to support and challenge ideas but not as the argument itself.
@matyasfekete8341
@matyasfekete8341 2 жыл бұрын
@@rc0ll18 That is true. However when most of the evidence points to one claim being true, then most mathematicians will be agreeing with it. Keep in mind that it is the minority of mathematicians that usually say 2+2=5. (Of course there are exceptions, but it is a good rule of thumb.) People do not become mathematicians to manipulate people into believing 2+2=5, so if they are wrong about an equation then it isn't on purpose and the miscalculation is usually recognised and corrected.
@metalman_j
@metalman_j 2 жыл бұрын
@@matyasfekete8341 When many mathematicians have a conflict of interest due to their entanglements with "big math", and other mathematicians are afraid of having their math license revoked for disagreeing with the "mathematical consensus", then that "consensus" becomes a lot less trustworthy than many would like to believe it is.

2 is not equal to 2,0. there is no precision about what comes after the coma. 2+2 could in fact be 2,3 + 2,4 which would make 4,7. by keeping the precision to +/- 1, we would see "2+2=5".
