I'm finding this series very interesting... As an American who had the great fortune to be stationed in the Netherlands in the U.S. Forces (Soesterberg AB 1989-1993), and who's been happily married to a lovely Dutch woman for going on 29 years, I find this topic very interesting. Even more so when I was introduced to my wife's maternal grandparents, they spoke amazing English and I immediately noticed his WWII memorabilia, books and other related materials and we bonded over our love of history. He broke out his photos, shared his experience during the war, he was actually in the Dutch Cavalry in the 30's, was reactivated prior to the German Invasion and spoke of his war years working in a German arms factory... You can imagine the plot twist as we left that initial meeting, I was all smiles from the exciting conversation, when my wife (still girlfriend at the time) had to tell me the dark side of the story...how her grandfather had actually been a member of the NSB, and well, how things didn't go so well for him after the war.... Quit in contrast to her fathers family where family members had died during the last winter of occupation....anyway, I could go on for ever, but needless to say, the history is both fascinating, and at times painful.... Keep up the great work!

You were stationed next to my former hometown of Amersfoort. Still can remember US soldiers in town. My grandfather served as an aircraft mechanic in Soesterberg. Mostly working on the Fokker planes. I'm tempted to tell his name (his last name is different than mine) but I won't. Thank you for your service. Your reassuring presence was more than welcome in these tense cold war years. I hope you and your wife are doing well to this day.

@@gauloiseguy I loved my time there and still have dear friends (in addition to family) I remember going on vacation within the Netherlands with some friends in the Dutch AF and meeting a very nice man who was from Belgium, he was happy to meet me and had a T-shirt that said to the effect of "I'd rather have a missile in my garden (referring to the fact that the U.S. had medium range weapons stationed there at the time) than a Russian in my kitchen". There was great Esprit De Corps between the NATO forces at that time.

I can't wait for the video where you will cover their fighting success because you can't deny that many of them such as men of battalion de Ruyter, Gerardus Mooyman or Derk Elsko Bruins showed outstanding bravery for which they were awarded with Knight's Crosses. Also Himmler himself said and predicted that Dutchmen are going to be the first Germanic volunteers awarded with them which turned out right.

The IV SS Panzer Korp was mainly 2 SS Divisions Totenkopf & Wiking under old Wiking Commander Herbert Otto Gille was named as the most combat effective of all SS units right up to the end of the war. This was a statement by a number of Germans. Even German General Hermann Balck, who disliked the Wiking SS at first until he seen their tenacity right up to the end of the fighting on the Eastern front. IV SS Panzer Korp took part in Hitlers last offensive in Hungary where they made 3 relief attempts on Budapest. Gille was one of only a handful of SS men who received the Knights cross with oakleaves, swords and diamonds.The Highest award of all in German army.

My father was a Dutch-American born in a New Jersey town which was full of Dutch immigrants, and people of Dutch ancestry. My grandfather, Marinus, also born in NJ, was a US Army soldier in 1917 who fought in France. My dad was a US Army Air Corps volunteer in 1940, a year and a half before Pearl Harbor, who served during WWII and Korea. The family back in Holland had served in the Netherlands army with distinction dating back to the Spanish Siege of Haarlem in 1572, serving as Engineer officers in every generation. One was a Major General during the Napoleonic Wars and after, marrying the sister of Johan Rudolf Thorbecke (she was my great-great-great grandmother). It was thus incredibly surprising to me to discover that some distant cousins served in SS Westland--my sister showed me their service history. Apparently they had both been in the KNIL, but were recruited by the SS . They served in Ukraine, one dying of injuries in a hospital near Odesa, the other unknown. I don't know much more about the brothers aside from that (the relatives in the Netherlands don't have much to say about them, for obvious reasons). The point is that it happens even in good families that they joined (and died) in the SS.

Thanks! As for your question. There was draft before the German invasion of the Netherlands. And when the Germans took over there was Arbeitseinsatz where Dutch males were called up for work. Dutch were never forcefully recruited in the German ranks.

I think i´ve read somewhere that while discipline in the waffen- SS was very hard, there was to some degree a bigger sense of fellowship between officers and men compared to the wehrmacht since the waffen-SS was not rooted in the prussian tradition with officers from the upper classes. Hitler was suspicious against the "old garde" of army officers after germanys defeat in WW1 so he didn´t want that tradition in the SS.

As the War went on the Germans realised that these soldiers were as good as them on the battlefield and were glad to have them. After the SS Wiking, there were 2 new Nordic SS Divisions created.. then the Belgian legions, They couldn't have been much worse after training. The language barrier most likely the reason.

Sounds that other nationalities had same experience that of us Finns. In most of Finnish SS volunteers diaryes and other sources, most germans especially NCO's were almost openly hostile against "lower" racial recruits, even like the other western "allies" of germany we were not too low in german racial spectrum. Bad treatment also led to a lot of conflicts with germans and problems with drinking were common. Most noticable example is Lauri Törni, he was one of finnish officers part of the volunteer formation, that were informed that there is not available spots for officers and was shipped home in summer 41 with few other officers. But offrecord one of biggest reason was him drinking and causing trouble, in many occations while defending the "honor" of his fellow enlisted countrymen while drunk. Germans viewed finns as exelent soldiers what came to combat capabilityes even during training, as finns scored better in marksmanship than average german troops. But lack of dicipline and unwillinges to adapt to german customs was seen as great drawback. Like with Dutch volunteers, there was real feat within germans, that on the front they would be killed by their own men. There is even cases in wich some finns "openly" said so. But in their own language so Germans would not understand. Well they kind of guessed, but could not prove it, due no one willing testify against their fellow men. But as it was with Dutch, finally on the front both parties started finally to respect one another and deep bond between soldiers were formed as one usually does during combat. Especially divisiol commander Felix Steiner of 5.SS Wiking wich finns were part of took liking to finns and avcording to records statet, that if he only had a division of such men instead of a battailion, what could he achieve. He also visited finnish freiwilligen in finland after the war and vise versa.

@@HistoryHustle It indeed is. There is unfortunately not too much about Finnisches Freiwillige Battalion in english. And orginally not in finnish neither. But during past 15 years many did write memorial books of those times in their "old days" like Aarne Kähärä, who was one of the youngest volunteer. He falsified his age and joined was 16year old. He unfortunately died last week. I also editet some additional info to my comment, wich i did write in a hurry orginally. The whole SS volunteer battalion is bit sensitive topic currently in Finland, due it had been potrayed as heroic endevour and that finns never commited warcrimes during their stay in SS. But now when Last veterans are dying their families have given their diaryes to historians in some there is suggestion of such things. So our goverment actually decided to do research of it. Result was that it is likely that some finns between 10-30 may have commited warcrimes, but there is lack of evidence, due most being in form that in a diary man said that his friend told him that his friends did this and that. @@rickybergsma9910 ik daag je uit om wakker te blijven bij zijn lessen. Het kon hem niet eens wat schelen dat er constant mensen de les verstoorden of lagen te slapen, dat maakte het nogal uitdagend. Het jaar daarna met een andere leraar ging het ineens een stuk beter, misschien omdat hij wel de contrle kon houden en daadwerkelijk les gaf ipv het boek opdreunen.

I think it's interesting that seemingly a sizeable proportion of the volunteers regretted joining up and did not accept the training regime. Given that the alternative for fit and able men might have been being transported to Germany to work as forced labour, it seems that they might have been in a better situation (well at least until they were sent to the Eastern Front).Wouldn't this have figured in their thinking? Given that it was nearly 80 years ago and times were tougher, some of them don't seem very different from the current crop of dropkicks who baulk at anything that demands a bit of effort and persistence.

The training regime was physically taxing, from my limited information about it. Lots of long route marches etc. They would have had to be young and fit to be inducted in the first place but even so it seems to have taken its toll.

You meantioned that political classes likely decreased as the war went on, I remember military history visualized mentioning in a video an article he saw at the german military archives that showed that political training became more and more of the curriculum. I wanna say like 40% of time was spent on political indoctrination by 45.

If there were those 3 " layers" or somehow casts between motherland Germans and neighboard , I do wonder what Himmler &C thought about the Italian , French or Spanish volunters in Their troops . The relations between official German and Italian Army It Is really well known , in some cases They fought vs eachother also before the Italian Armistice , but I am curious to know what They were thinking about the Italian or any latin in Their SS divisions .

Am looking forward to your view on this matter, History Hustle. Today we live in a world with a zillion terabyte of information at our fingertips. That does not prove to be a guarantee for a well informed democracy. It is easy for a group of people to be wrong and not know it. Same now and even easier 100 years ago, when the impact of the first afordable mass produced radios made many family homes ardent doctrine believers. (compare thát to the effect of social media and the power of media-outlets owned by the very rich, some things never change) Although a minority, many volunteers were persuaded and joined. I hope you also shed light on how their worldview was in the 30s when they grew up. The 30s must have given a constant stream of good news coming from Germany as the regime lifted the working class out of poverty and provided jobs. Sooner or later, everybody got to know the hidden agenda of that evil regime but then it was to late. The frog in the hot water metaphore, you know.

I think the discipline in the Waffen SS was brutal and inhumane by any standard, much more so than by comparison the regular German army. Former German members of the Waffen SS reported similar experiences, for instance Jürgen Girgensohn who became a social-democrat politician after the war.

I think the issue is the Nazis were Socialist, 3:42. TIK literally described the conflict between Nazism and Marxism as a Socialist Civil War, one that is still going on today at an Intellectual level as most Socialist refuse to consider the Nazis Socialist because they don't match their idea of what Socialism is. Many pro Socialist were not Marxist and Anti Communist. Even the Fascist were Socialist yet also Anti Marxist. The German Social Democrats were anti Marxist/Communist despite also being Socialist at the time as well just as many Social Democratic movements eventually becoming Fascist as well. Issue being a lot of Socialist wouldn't mind fighting with the Germans if it meant getting rid of Marxism/Communism even if their idea of Socialism was different than the Nazis.

Er staat een grafsteen anno 2020. Er liggen nog regelmatig bloemen op zijn graf. Ik twijfelde of het geruimd was maar ben vandaag even wezen kijken. Ook nu lagen er bloemen.

No way i would fight for a country that fought my Army and occupied my home region ( didnt wrote my country because i give a shit for countrys/states). But i know many did, my Father (algerian born) and some of his Brothers were conscripted into the French /colonial) Army. when i was a little Boy my Mother told me that our neighbour next door to us Herr van der Neu... (i dont write the full name because of Name and shame ;)) was a Dutch SS Men during the war he had the german citizenship since end of WW2, after WW he stayed in germany, had a good clean and well payed job in a furniture Comp. and was married with a german women and 2 Kids, i played every day with his Daughter she was 3 or 4 years older then i. he was a kind person a family Man, my Mother liked that he never went out to drink like my dad or other men, he was calm and a bit sad person he surly missed his family back in the nederlande because he couldnt visit them after WW2 . I remember in late 60s or early 70s was the first time after WW2 that he went back to NL to visit his family after all the years since WW2.

from another teacher: only Catholics, inc. Germans, were mistreated by the SS drill instructors, who were criticised even by Skorzeny (child of ethnic Germans). I cannot think of a more nazi-fascist group than the ex Benelux&German& later pro-nazi Italian & French one. Dutch people had mein kampf at home. Germanic non-fully SS legions could be more political than the SS-Dutchmen. Dutch common criminals were mainly in the future Landstorm. No difference between ethnic Germans, Reich Germans & ex Benelux Germanics whatsoever. Van Roekel was not there, my Vets did. Cernay was never a disciplinary camp. Only Scandinavians were the "US anticommunist repubblican" sort (faked fascists). "Hitler fascist" countries really included the Netherlands
