During World War II in the Netherlands there existed different forms of Dutch collaboration. Most well known was the NSB (National Socialist Movement (Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging)) led by Anton Mussert. Within this movement there were different ideas. Mussert clashed with Henk Feldmeijer and Meinhoud Rost van Tonningen who believed the Netherlands should be absorbed in the German Third Reich. Therefore the Dutch SS (Nederlandsche SS) was created. It later became known as the Germanic SS. Men from this faction later fought as Waffen-SS volunteers on the Eastern Front or in the unit Landstorm Nederland. A fairly obscure story of WW2 in Holland.

Fascism and anti-semitism was common in all of Europe. Anti-communism was dominant in Europe, mainly in Catholic and Protestant countries. Seems Factionalism was ripe on all sides of the conflict during WWII. For the allies you had the faction that wanted to severely punish Germany and those who believed Germany should be minorly punished. On the other side you had things like this and other Factions. Anyways great video as always Stefan

The Germans may have encouraged factionalism - it stopped any individual collaborator group becoming too powerful. In France there was rivalry between various fascist groups, in the same way. Their uniformed members tended to wear blue shirts, with the shade of blue and the design of the shirt varying from group to group.

In Belgium 400.000 were prosecuted ! 40.000 were condemned, of which 3000 condemned to death. 242 were actually executed by the government, the last one as late as 1950. More than 100 more were murdered without a trial, by street mobs after the liberation. To this day the topic is undiscussable in Belgium. The only country in Europe unable to forgive these people and their families. Thousands still live in poverty today, because of what their greatgrandfathers did. A country that cannot deal with its past, is a country without future.

I have been wondering for a while: would it be a good idea if the role played by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways - for foreigners) during the occupation (and particularly the moving of troops and the Holocaust) will get a separate video ? Also, perhaps, the role played by the PTT in facilitating German communication or the Dutch media in spreading propaganda ? Or, perhaps, the police ? Or, perhaps, the Dutch civilian administration and civil service on all levels of society ? Somehow, the role played by the various "services" that form the mechanism of an occupation doesn't always the receive the attention in general historiography that it should.

My Grandfather, was in the NSB, I am 54, but wanted a union of the Dutch speaking nations, basically a union of NL & FL. He and his wife, my grandmother who was also in the NSB didnt want much to do with a union with Germany, they just wanted a brotherly friendship with Germany nothing more. The general NSB membership were not as anti-semetic as many now think, even had some members with Indo background. My Grandparents moved to Germany directly after the war, they little option for many Dutch people who were members of the NSB as they were treated as traitors by the royal Dutch government.

@@HistoryHustle My grandfather for example said the Jews were not really Dutch, but were not all bad and the good ones were very unfairly treated by the Germans, as the Germans did not seperate the good Jews from the bad. He said many Jews worked hard in the Netherlands and had normal jobs and did no harm, so they were not a problem. He also thought the Dutch people were not well treated by the Germans in general, but after the war he moved to Germany for a few years before moving to South Africa and he always said he liked the Germans in general, as I do. The NSB was Nationalist & yes Fascist, but hatred of Jews seems to have been of far less importance to most its members than the overall love of the Nation, the language and the culture of the NL & Flanders, yes Germanic blood was a part of it, but like Italian Fascism Anti-Semitsm was not so important before the Germans made it so & that can be seen by the drop in membership when the pro-German "NL as just a small part of the German Reich, a region NOT a Nation", Anti-Jewish propaganda was pushed on the more Dutch Nationalist members who naturally didnt want to be blended into a German Empire.
