Same here. Great first run shows. Great 50s and 60s shows in syndication. I miss how people still had a sense of humor and understood that jokes were just that: jokes. Even if they were in poor taste. People understood that one's person beliefs didn't give one an excuse not to do one's job because someone asked them to do something that offended them. The only bad thing about the mid to late 70s was the music. Disco sucked then and still does.

70s were great for music and TV like Barney Miller and Columbo, then plummeted in the 80s with the corporate dreck that epitomized the Reagan era. Luckily, music and TV rebounded in the 90s (the latter mostly due to HBO, Showtime, etc). Barney Miller was a fantastic show! It encapsulated the 70's, while breaking down barriers. Some of the running gags throughout the series were hilarious; and would often creep up on the viewers, because unlike modern sitcoms, the writers didn't overwork them. They knew how to get the most out of minimal use. The coffee gags were precious, as we're Fish's toilet gags.

My favorite was Steve Landesberg as Dietrich. He was so funny and so deadpan. I had no idea he was a comic. I do remember he was in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which also starred Jason Segel. Landesberg played Segel's therapist and he was not in the film long but he was very funny. I loved it when Dietrich trolled Harris. You could tell Dietrich loved doing it too. Some of the best scenes of the show had those two fighting or sharing deadpan quips with each other. I loved the storyline right after Landesberg joined the cast when Harris moved into Dietrich's apartment (not by choice ) and they clashed greatly and it was SO funny how he got under Harris' skin. Ron Glass and Steve Landesberg played so well off each other. I wonder in real life if they were friends. Actually Ron Glass was so great on this show but he was so undervalued in many ways because other actors like Abe Vigoda, Jack Soo and Steve Landesberg got most of the attention. Harris and Wojo (played wonderfully by fellow Michigander Max Gail) had the most growth in the series. Besides Hal Linden (who was the only cast member to be on every episode of the show), Glass and Gail were the only two supporting cast members to be on all the seasons. Neither of them were even nominated for their performances, which is a real shame.

Great writing - so many of the problems encountered on the show are still with us today. So many of the people arrested to came back to do other shows. Dietrich, Levitt - they were cast as lawbreakers and later as police. The guy who did the werewolf was on several different episodes too. truly a great sitcom - they don't make them like that anymore.

My favorite character was Steve Landesburg. He was always the one who was like a deep thinker and sophisticated. Barney Miller forever. I miss them all and i still watch the re runs.

Mine too. In the early 80s I had a chance to attend a party (Foundation Junior Blind) where we spoke as a celebrity guest. I popped up and asked "Are you really omniscient?!" He replied disarmingly "Huh....nah I don't know nothin'." It was so awesome.

BTW Landesburg was first on the show as a false priest selling bibles in S2; didn't know it until I watched series on DVD this past year.

Loved this show. It was such a refreshing departure from the all of the other TV cop shows that were so prevalent at the time. The cast was just superb, and what really made it work was when a cast member left, they didn't try and replace him; they would write in a completely character. I remember watching an interview with Hal Linden--years after the show went off the air--and he said the main reason Barney Miller ended was they simply began to run out of ideas of for scripts. They even worked with drama departments at the local colleges and universities in the hope of coming up with new story lines, but they still couldn't come up with enough fresh ideas to keep the show going.

The cops on Barney Miller were decent humans that had respect for themselves so they were able to give it to others. Cops today must not respect themselves because they're horrible to others. Welcome to corporate America. Motto: profits above people. National bird: used to be the bald eagle, but now it's the middle finger

Jack Soo also was praised for his role in the 1961 musical movie "Flower Drum Song" which was based on a Broadway play by the same name. It was his first movie role. "Flower Drum Song" was also noted to be about Orientals living in America and almost all the cast members were either Chinese or Japanese, a rarity for that time. Most Oriental roles in movies were played by Caucasian actors who were made up to appear Oriental. The only exception was Juanita Hall who was a well known black singer on Broadway and had appeared in "South Pacific" as a Pacific Islander. She was a replacement in the part however. Originally the part was to be played by Anna Mae Wong who sadly passed away shortly before filming was to start.

One of the best non conformist early 70s show!! Opened the door of all kinds! A great loving boss, working with other colors, working young, middle aged, and the elderly together... and the people whom got arrested and brought in to the precinct was unforgettable laughter of why they were brought in... the combed the path of our today's weirdness!! My father was a Chicago policeman for 32 years. He loved Barney Miller and said it depicted most accurately daily police work. One scene in the show that actually happened at my dad's police station was when Wojo tried to open a window but Yemana said it was nailed shut when the building was condemned. My Dad worked at the Maxwell Street Station and that building was in such bad shape that he had to wear a sweater most of the year because of how drafty the building was even though you couldn't open the windows. If you ever watched Hill Street Blues, the outside of their police station was actually Maxwell Street Police Station.
