It was one of the most popular sitcoms of its time and relied on slapstick, physical comedy, and even burlesque to get its laughs. It was a brilliant show developed by writers Seaman Jacobs, Ed James, and Jim Barnett.
But the real reason the show became a success was because of the stars on-screen. The F-Troop cast was a great ensemble of some of America’s finest actors. Sadly, many of the F-Troop cast members have passed away.
Forrest Tucker, who played Sgt. O’Rourke, passed away in 1986 at the age of 67. He had a reputation for playing villains and he truly did justice to the scheming Sgt. O’Rourke!
In contrast, there was the bumbling Captain Parmenter played by Ken Berry. He passed away at the age of 85 in 2018. He was a prolific actor also known for his word in Mayberry R.F.D.
One of the best characters from the F-Troop cast was the sassy Wrangler Jane played by Melody Patterson. She died of natural causes in 2015. She begun her career with F-Troop and soon became one of the most beloved characters on the show.
James Hampton played the foolhardy Hannibal Dobbs on the show. He also had a great career in films, appearing in The Longest Yard and Teen Wolf. He died at age 84 in 2022.
Frank de Kovawas a Shakespearean actor who had a formidable career on the stage. He played the Native American character Chief Wild Eagle - which became his most famous role. He passed away in 1981 at the age of 71.
Watch this video to learn about the incredible careers of the F-Troop cast and how they died. We’ll also catch up with F-Troop cast member Larry Storch to see what he’s up to nowadays…

@phxxr650r Ah, the 60s...my favorite decade (I was born in '60)...I feel that the humor back then was silly/goofy - but it seemed to flow with ease...The Dick Van Dyke Show, Get Smart, F-Troop, McHale's Navy, Gilligan's Island, The Andy Griffith Show (with Barney Fife's "nip it in the bud")...no cursing or sexual innuendos were needed...I remember my first pair of bell bottoms...apache scarves...wide belts...and 60s music...simple and yet fresh...Wichita Lineman...but I digress...

Larry Storch was a guest at a Greek wedding on Long Island back in the 90s and I was a member of the band . I remember that it was in a big tent and it was pouring out. He was there with his wife and was very friendly, cordial and low keyed. Of course, all of us in the band grew up watching F Troop so, we were all a bit awestruck. When he was asked to come up to say a few words our horn section started playing the F Troop theme and he turns to us and says, “you guys actually remember that song?? “ He then proceeded to slay the “audience” with some very funny stories and jokes. He was an awesome celebrity/regular guy in every way! I’ll never forget that!

I do not think that millennials would agree that this show is funny. Like other shows of the past, with the possible exception of Get Smart, if the show was in black and white or did not have realistic effects or lots of action, it was boring or old. No matter how funny it appears today to those that saw it when it was produced, something about the acting style and lack of explicit language turns off younger viewers.

@@vincentsartain3061 I was thinking of that exact comparison. To be sure, the 'get rich quick' scheme was quite common in sitcoms up through the sixties (Silver's show was originally titled 'You'll Never Get Rich'); where I think he gave it a twist and influenced later shows (usually led, fairly successfully, by a single mastermind) was pulling these scams in revered typically well-disciplined institutions, the Army (Silver's), Navy(McHale's), Calvary(F-Troop), hospital(Temperature's Rising).

Yeah, seeing as how the Hekawee(sp?) are all played by Jewish Vaudvillian comedians (a deliberate choice done for comedic purpose) I'm sure that will be blasted pretty bad. Hey, I heard once that some of the Hekawee really wanted the tribe to be called the Fukawee... however, the censors anticipated the joke behind why they were called the hekawee (tribe got lost, asked people where the heck are we? they thought we say we're the Hekawee) and shot down the name. Want to bet that the same people who would be upset by Jewish American Indians would have no problem with Fukawee on prime time network?
