The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis was a trailblazing coming-of-age sitcom starring Dwayne Hickman that aired between 1959 and 1963 on CBS. The series was adapted from a series of short stories by American humorist and author Max Shulman from 1945 which were re-released as a collection in 1951. Shulman also the script for the feature film adaptation of Dobie Gillis, The Affairs of Dobie Gillis, which was produced by MGM in 1953.
Dobie Gillis was particularly significant as it was the first American television series produced by one of the major networks that featured teenagers as its leads. Other series from that era, such as Leave it to Beaver and Father Knows Best primarily featured teens as supporting characters in family dynamics.
It was a historically significant series for its depiction of the Beatnick counterculture of the era. Dwayne Hickman would later say that the series represented what he called the 'end of innocence of the 1950s' before the subsequent cultural revolution of the 1960s.
Since Dobie Gillis has been off the air for well over half a century, most of its cast members, Dwayne Hickman included, have since passed away. How could you have left out the "nose scrunching, girlfriend wannabe" of Dobie Gillis,...Zelda? She always had a crush on Dobie....but he could never see himself with her but could never stop himself from returning the "small girl's" (as Krebs called her) nose scrunch. I always think, as many did, that Dobie returned her feelings but never wanted to in lieu of more "beautiful" but "out of his league" girls. She and Maynard G. Krebs, were my 2 favorite characters!

Steve Franken died in 2012, not 2021. It was Aug. 24, and he was 80 years old at the time. William Schallert was 93 when he died, not 83. Tuesday Weld's character name was pronounced "Thayl-ya", not "Tall-ya".

Steve Franken was also a constant guest star on Bewitched as several different characters, both mortal and warlock! When I was watching a marathon the Decades Channel was running of this show I got a kick out of a phenomenon that seemed to happen on several shows in 1962/63 season and that was Florida Freibus's hairdo getting very bouffant, similar to Barbara Billingsley on Leave it to Beaver and Marjorie Lord on The Danny Thomas Show around the same time!

It wasn’t my favorite show but when I did watch a couple of episodes, Zelda and Maynard were the most memorable. William Shallert & Jean Byron were great on the Patty Duke Show as her parents. I loved Bob Denver on Gilligan’s Island. Doris Packer was also good as the principal on Leave It To Beaver and her role as a society lady on the Andy Griffith Show.

Sheila James Kuehl (Zelda) is a fine person. I wouldn't believe for a minute that she did anything underhanded or corrupt. Her entire life has been devoted to fighting for human rights, not just LGBTQ issues. I would be willing to bet that that raid on her home was based on her political, right wing enemies. She went up against the anti-gay policies of many powerful conservatives (like Arnold Schwartzenegger).

This is filled with errors ad omissions, the first claiming the show is over a century old. There were errors on ages at the tie of death of cast members. Omitted were several notable cast members such as Warren Beatty who was in the first season. Most surprising was not mentioning Sheila Kuehl who portrayed Zelda. She is currently 81 years old and was a noted politician in California.
