Should put some resting weight it, and keep adding more until it begins to give. Sledge hammer doesn't really tell you much of what the neck can handle.

Truss rod gives the neck support under the fretboard. There are a few online ebay stores that sell a lot of guitars with broken / cracked headstocks that didn't survive shipping. I've saved a lot of money buying and fixing these for 20% of the new price.

the grain lines.. shold be perpendicular to the fretbord.. I dont know if thats clear.. O like to draw it on paper for my clients to undertand it, and just in case I have a piece like in this vid.. and I show it to them .
