However I don't think it was supposed to go the way it was played out, I believe it's the stigma and mindset of the entire (players in the game of this hidden probably barely illegally lifestyle it entails) the dancers are pawns that move to the place the players who playing put them. They are unaware of the board and it's peices that can harm them because they are not the ones moving.) So in my opinion I believe Ebony was manipulated by the players too. Remember the guys "icecube and the other one from earlier? Who tried to get Ebony into the car but diamond grabbed her up. It's them that causes the outcome to happen to Ebony by luring Roni out with the weed and telling Junior he can smash because she was into it) as pay back for dissing them before. Roni was truly horrified by what happened but obviously to get her brother out of the crossfire she does what people do that are flight mode do running.

@@curtislamarh Very valid observations indeed! I do agree that the environment of the Players Club breeds a very toxic type of human. But I also believe it attracts that pre-existing toxicity in others. I also find it ironic that Ronnie was so horrified by junior's assault on Ebony (rightfully so!) meanwhile Ronnie herself took full sexual advantage of Diamond while she was unconscious. To expand upon your previously made point ; It's also worth acknowledging that dozens of Junior's friends stood right outside the door listening to him assault Ebony and did nothing whatsoever to help her. As you mentioned Ice Cube and the other dude who led Ronnie away are the ones who facilitated the assault. So the spectrum of toxic masculinity for the men in this movie indicates that they either cause sexual assault, participate in it or BLATANTLY ignore it. So I thoroughly agree with you.

Ronnie is TRULY one of the best black movie villains. Textbook. She’s stylized perfectly in juxtaposition to Diamond, she commands a room, she’s a scene stealer, and JUST when you think she’s done enough you find out she’s way worse than you thought. She’s awful in a PERFECT way.

For your information, context within the movie with Ronnie asking the other girls to dance and them not wanting to because its Junior, leads me to believe he has a history of being sexually aggressive/abusive. Using his physical strength to overpower his victim(s).. though of course. In real life, some men will use the Ronnie Method as well.. And Some Women use the JR method on other women also.. Ronnie is a true pimp. She didn't care about anything at all but made sure she made a dollar off it all in every way possible. Them cop parties are regular (i hated it then and hate it now. I also want to rock that entire look at least once in my life), she's turned a lot of girls out at The Player's Club, and I'm sure she makes more money than Dolla Bill there. She also set up a lot of parties for her brother to grape women at. Absolutely nobody was going to do Junior's anything. The fact that no one were warning these girls is wild. I'm sure Ronnie got a kick out of turning out Ebony in front of her cousin knowing she wasn't going to do anything about it cuz if she cared she wouldn't have had her working there. A predator knows that everyone is prey.
@darkwriter_xx94

I agree with all of this! Especially the fact that Ronnie probably targeted Ebony as a way to get back at Diamond. And I did catch that everyone seemed to know not to do any of junior’s parties but no one thought to warn Ebony. I wonder if her friendship with Ronnie made the other girls not like her? I never thought of her being complicit in her brother SAing women at other parties. If that was the case did she think she’d be able to protect Ebony as long as she stayed around her bcuz she seemed genuinely upset about what he did to her.

Ebony was trouble in Tallahassee, which is why she was sent off after graduation. Ebony is very envious of Diana, but thought her and Diamond were on equal grounds, since stripping was contrary to Diana’s goody two shoes character. Ronnie really played on that jealousy to manipulate Ebony into getting deeper in the game, so she can make more money, have a better car, etc. Although, Ronnie would prefer Diamond over Ebony and doesn’t really hide it. Multiple characters tell her she second fiddle to Diamond, to get Ebony to do what they want.

I honestly love this movie a lot.... I have a few takes 1.) I stand by the fact that this movie was carried by the supporting cast. Bernie Mac, Jamie Foxx, A.J. Johnson, James Amos, Faizon Love, Adele Givens, Charlie Murphy and Terrane Howard. On paper, this movie was extremely stacked. But those folks really brought an energy to the movie in which made it more lighthearted despite the dark tones of the movie, especially Love, Amos, Johnson, and mostly Mac. 2.) Speaking of the dark tones of the movie, Chrystale Wilson did a miraculous job with showcasing the predatory nature of folks in that industry. It's a rare take that a lot of cinema really haven't shown to a degree of the predator being, well a woman. She did an amazing job in the movie as Ronnie and it saddens me that she doesn't get enough recognition for this role, she does indeed deserve her flowers. 3.) The fight scene between Wilson and LisaRaye McCoy is probably one of the greatest fight scenes in cinema period. Not a hot take but by god that scene lives rent free in my head as one of the greatest that I have ever seen. 4.) I don't think that LisaRaye is that great of an actress. historically, sometimes it's just basically LisaRaye playing herself... but she certainly had a lot of bright moments in this movie, from the fight scene, to some of the more emotional scenes in the movie... as the main character, this is clearly her best role by far.

Lance had some nerve to demand that Diamond quit working at the Players Club. He didn't even give her any options. She was only stripping to pay for school and she had a young son to care for and the child's father wasn't around. So was he gonna pay her tuition and financially support her and her son? I think not. He was just embarrassed because his friends was clowning him. But here's the thing though. Diamond was one of, if not the favorite of all the girls at the Players Club. They probably low key wanted her. Diamond's professor gave her an option by giving the information of someone he knew who worked at BET. If Diamond would have quit, what Lance would have done?

It is fucked up that Diamond had already gotten 'caught up' in the club/assaulted, etc.. and she still took Ebony in there.. And i think she was in the midst of the lesson of Realizing how her actions & decisions effect others.. She was discarded as an adult teenager ,basically, by her parents over a baby & a school decision. So her young traumatized mind may have processed & Coped with allat in the way of suppressing her emotions & hyper focusing on money & her goals.. So also in her mind.. balancing her goals, bills, child & ebony..meant keeping Ebony where she thought she could keep up with her.. The Club.. cuz in her mind- if Ebony worked a regular job, it'd be much more difficult to keep tabs on her since she was in school by day & the club all night.. and it wouldnt be as much money.. Them doing allat lying and hiding stuff gives That they come from a real strict family that obsesses over image. And the underlining homophobia gives potentially religious parents.

I need to go back and watch the film again, but from what I remember, Ebony just seemed very green. She obviously had a wild hair or two in her blood wherever she was from, but the appeal of the "big city" was heavily romanticized in her mind. That was such a fun time, but I handled it like Diamond, actually, most of the girls do… you got your few Ebonies bouncing around but they were actually rare! We were there to make MONEY! For Your Information... I think they tried to give Diamond a well rounded story but because she wasn't wildin out, it wasn't as interesting. She had the thing with Myron following her home but she survived. AND That was quickly overshadowed by Ebony and Lance in the bed together. Yes Lance cheated but she ended up with a better dude. Yeah she was in danger of failing(they could have made that bigger than they did) but she didn't fail. She graduated on time. Her life was merely inconvenienced by Ebony's antics but other than that, not much. Even the thing that happened to her by Ronnie. She didn't suffer any true anguish afterwards like Ebony did. So they tried but they made Diamond a stripper with morals so nothing really bad ever happened to her(aside from the non consensual thing she experienced while under the influence)

I feel like Ebony had been in this sort of situation in her past and re-traumatizing was about to occur. I think she was having second thoughts about doing the party but was trying to get lit enough to be numb to whatever was to come about. Looking back, it further reminds me how you can't ever assume people who look like you will protect you or actually care about your well being. The movie was a great honest delve into the world of stripping. I just can't believe generations later so many people still want to be a part of that culture, as if this movie wasn't enough of a cautionary tale.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION. Diamond set Eboni up for failure by getting her a job at The Players Club knowing how toxic it was & Ronnie SAing her. Eboni got turned out because she’d been sheltered her entire life. She wanted to be like Diamond but Ronnie probably told her that she could be better. She fell under Ronnie’s influence & found out in the end who had her best interest at heart. Fun Facts: Lisa Raye was in Makaveli’s Turn In Up & she also appeared on Martin. Monica Calhoun played Rebbie Jackson in The Jacksons An American Dream, She also appeared on A Different World, The Wayans Bros, The Jamie Foxx show & she was also in The Earnest Green Story alongside Morris Chestnut. Lisa Raye & Monica Calhoun were also in Civil Brand & Gang Of Roses. Lance played by Montae Russell was on the short lived HBO series Laurel Avenue. St. Louis played by the late Larry Mccoy, was in Malcolm X, Dead Presidents & Never Die Alone. The dude who told dollar bill it was time to hear that pop was played by the late Badja Djola. He played the original Half Dead in Penitentiary. He was also in Mississippi Burning, A Rage In Harlem & Who’s The Man. He & the late Bernie Mac were in Who’s The Man. Myron, played the Jimmy Woodard was in Hollywood Shuffle & House Party 3. Samuel Monroe Jr. is the eternal typecast. If you look up the word typecast in the dictionary you’ll see his picture. I would love to see The Players Club get coverted into a series like The Best Man Final Chapters. I also would love to see how the characters faired after the cameras stop rolling.

I enjoyed the breakdown☺️. Is it bad that I’ve always thought Lisa Raye’s acting has never been good like at all lol. Her career has basically been her benefiting from desirability politics (so has Nia Long’s and a few other 90s OGs). It just seems like Ebony’s family ultimately failed her within a 2 month timeframe. Her own mother and aunt basically had no plan for her when she got to ATL and just threw her under her cousin’s care in which the cousin was still struggling to make ends meet with a child, a complaining boyfriend, and school. It’s almost like Diamond’s mom didn’t care what Ebony did as long as she wasn’t work at the strip club like huh? Lol. Looking back at it now I’m like why didn’t ANYBODY suggest school to Ebony. I would have like the story more if we could have seen Ebony get a fair chance at trying school and working part time at the shoe store THEN gradually being suck into the fast life after being persuaded by maybe Ronnie and Trick’s like they did Diamond. The subtle homophobia in the movie is also kinda weird but okay lol I hold a lil animosity towards this movie also bc my mom chose to give me the sex/consent/rape talk whilst watching this movie during a BET movie-thon when I was like 10..

Thanks for sharing this! As I mentioned, I suspect that this is what some of the students at my school were doing too, although I didn't know first-hand.

No family member, male or female, has ever made a move for one of my paramours, BUT I have a friend whose sister (ten months younger) we suspect slept with her first husband and definitely be flirting and making inappropriate jokey-jokes with my friends second husband. I don’t understand their relationship, like how can you love me and betray me?

I’ve always hated this movie with a passion cuz Lisa Raye’s acting is one dimensional. Ugh. You guys def made it interesting lol On the topic of Ronnie dancing at the party, that would’ve been gross. That’s her brother’s party lol. That’s very personal lol. Her even being present is weird lol

As a bartender for more than 8 years and a former male entertainer for another 8. The bartender is everyone's therapist and the eyes of the club we tend to know more than we admit and see/hear more than we want. Like a good therapist, we tell when it's dangerous. As a club dancer, the bartender should be your best friend and side pimp in a sense.

I think most people give diamond more credit than she deserves. She did everything Eboni did. She just decided it wasnt the way to go. She had to experience and then learn. Baby girl got R@%!!# by another female. i also think thats where her fear for eboni being with the woman. her point was man or woman they can both get you. I also think she wanted to know for sure if Ronni tried Eboni. This all boils down to Eboni had to learn her own lessons. unfortunately those lessons were way worse than what diamond went through!!! I bet if diamond continued to carry herself like she did she wouldn't be as popular as she was. Pretty or not. she would have been ran threw.

Older cousin role model. That’s why in some hoods younger people join gangs or sold narcs with older role models or if the older cousins all worked in construction, when the younger cousin want to get money they go do that with them. She turned 18 and wanted money and a place and see what’s working for her cousin. The age is easily influenced and learning adulthood

Usually the older dancers make the real money and they barely did anything. But I do remember this one time I was sitting with a customer and there was an older dancer on stage (terrible dancer, just awful) and my customer was like “HOW OLD IS THIS WOMAN!!!????” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 “what is that dance? It looks like a mating ritual!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I heard that part of the reason why Crystal was so good in the role was because she and Lisa had beef on set. Heard that fight was real, but I may be incorrect.

1:29:53 going back on to my earlier comment think that scene with ebony in her draws was foreshadowing for the eventual moment, I think this moment with the banana was her realizing it could actually happen and she was thinking about that moment earlier in the movie. Probably plotting, officially.

37:22 that look was a signal. They knew nobody wanted to do his party. Ebony is NEW. She don't know that the local girls know. Then when it came time... She was the only one who showed up to the party.

Diamond said her mama wanted Ebony there so she can keep her out of trouble so clearly she already had a bad rep with the family and as for Ebony being a stripper I think it was just she needed a job right away and Diamond could help with that I think she would've followed her big cousin anywhere as far as jobs go

I could care less what other people have , I can always get it too . That’s just my mentality. Never long after other people’s things because you never know w they got it . I cant be persuaded to be a stripper, be on only fans be a escort or any of that because I’ve always had some type of respect for myself and never felt comfortable with people looking at me especially half naked

Maturity is realizing.... 1.) Reggie and his sidekick got revenge on diamond by getting ebony raped because she stopped them from running a train on ebony 2.) They plotted this knowing that diamond would come to the rescue 3.) They knew by ronnie getting beat up by diamond(they set ronnie up too) it would bring a lot of drama and dolla bill would come out the club so they can unalive him about the money he owes their boss.

Being from Tallahassee myself and eventually moving to Texas for school I always strongly understood Ebony’s naïveté perspective in the beginning. She really didn’t know any better.

To answer your question: I think Ebony was already on that trajectory, cause remember when she caught her in Bed with Lance, she said she’s always with somebody’s man. So yeah, she been about that life.
