Although I went to a HBCU and LOVED it....let's be honest..Diamond was pregnant her senior year, her parents was still being supportive, her father was willing to pay for college and her momma was willing to babysit...she was being a brat 🤷🏾‍♀️ she could've did that first year and get a scholarship that next year if she wanted to be smart about it...she was absolutely spoiled and determined which is good but everything could've been avoided

Honestly Diamond had a good heart through it all. Even when people did her wrong she still stuck through it. We don’t give her enough credit yes she brought ebony into the club but she didn’t know ebony was going to be wild. Everyone tested Diamond until she reached her breaking point and then everyone thought she was crazy when she really was just trying to work and go to school that’s all

hold up, lightbulb moment: so diamond's mama was willing to babysit her grandson at any given point, yet she was quick to push ebony onto diamond to take care of (and basically told her to deal with it)? mmmm, that tells me mama knew (whether up front or deep down) her own niece was foul and didn't want any of that smoke. however, does that also mean somewhere along the way mama never honestly respected or looked down on--in a classist way--diamond...or ebony...or her own sister? because early on, she didn't want diamond to leave the house with the baby. now it's like "i'll take the baby and y'all do that heathen stuff elsewhere."

@@missmisher yeah that is true. But if the idea was for ebony to be set straight, and the mama knew diamond was already working at the club, having her deal with it was already setting everyone up for failure. The same scene where Blue and Diamond are in the parking lot after the club incident, it cuts to where you can see Ronnie and Myron sitting in the car watching Diamond leave. So, I believe Ronnie set that up to have Myron follow Diamond to her house. Cause in a previous scene, she dropped off Ebony. So, now Ronnie knows where Diamond lives.

7:51 when this movie came out I was a kid. Before I knew the importance of an HBCU.. the dads character really bothered me calling them "Nigga colleges" that always struck a chord with me. Now even though I went back to school late I am currently in my last year at an HBCU (Johnson C. Smith University) so I feel it is just as important for young black people to go to an HBCU now as it was back in the 90s. because back in the 90s we had influences like "a different world", Martin and Living Single would promote HBCU in the clothing in the wardrobe. So, we saw it back then but now it's just getting popular again because of the importance of representation, education and the political climate has changed plus there are a lot of hbcus they need funding from alumni to stay open. But anyway... 🤷🏿‍♀️

1:47:23 I find the professor's approach to be a lot more than low-key after he saw her clapping in the club. I think the interest was always there, hence the unwarranted I assistance he gave her all the way through. But he got some more balls once she appeared to be lower hanging fruit than she initially presented. The real question for me is, would he still have given her this contact at BET if he didn't catch her in the club?
@Funnie1Baby

I think they made Diamond timid in the beginning to show how the club can change you. Even if it’s a facade you can’t let anyone in the strip club see you sweat. It can be a savage place sometimes. After the encounter with Ronnie that night she had to change how she carried herself to survive.

1:47:34 Maybe the professor saw this before. She wasn’t flaunting her night club money and fame, getting derailed by the usual. She made it semester after semester, consistently trying to keep the two worlds separated. That takes a lot. Maybe he felt she was serious about her future and she was worth helping. I knew a few girls in school who stripped to pay for school. You see them in the Bursar’s office with straight cash paying their tuition. Some you see moving out because the money and or the life had derailed them. And it usually doesn’t take long if you don’t have a plan you at least try to stick to. Ebony had no plan, not even an aspiration to have her own place. She just wanted money and attention from anyone.

I know a lot of people may disagree but diamond should’ve just listened to her father. Yes her father was ignorant for his “nigga college” comment but all the bad that came from her being at the club didn’t make going to the HBCU on her own worth it. I mean we are questing the rational of these characters but in retrospect... Diamond is 18 to 22... I don't know about anyone else but from 18 to 22... I was a dam fool!!! My decision making process was not up to par with structural life dynamics so there should be grace for Her a bit. I say for a Single Mom at that age... Diamond was pretty grounded given the circumstances but regardless at that time a ton of development is taking place. I also think That professor was just a good dude... Was he attracted to her... Yes rather unconsciously or blatantly but I should say that regardless some People just has that IT factor and it's noticeable... It's heightened actually and Diamond was that girl overall. Also just want to say Chrystal as Ronnie is legendary. I wish her career would have taken off after this... I mean she did that!!! 1:03:10 when this movie came out, I was 15 years old (side note, LisaRaye was my crush until I was about 24 or 25). That being said, i remembered how much college was and I remembered going to school with a "stripper" (more on that later). I grew up in Texas, so the average cost (excluding big universities such as UT, TA&M, TX Tech, Rice, etc... during 2000 to 2006) of tuition was about +/-$2k. It was the room and board that cost the most because at the time, a pell grant was enough to cover most if not all of the tuition. When you look at the movie at face value, it doesn't look like Diana/Diamond ever lived on campus, and even back then, living off campus was a bit more expensive than living on campus because colleges tend to over inflate the rent. When i transferred to A&M Corpus Christi, we had a section of the student center where most of the black, some Mexican and a few white students would kick it. One of them (who was actually a friend) use to work at this place called Cheetahs (coincidently i never went). She actually told us stories that didn't portray the lifestyle in a glorious light (she even said that, because she wasn't "top heavy", she had to keep up her pedicures, obviously for clear heels, to compete to get her tips). However, she was from Corpus, which leads to my main point of my post. I'm not saying that wasn't possible to strip to pay for school (which used to be kind of a trope if not a joke), you do have to take into account what was being paid for. Diamond drive a practical priced car (Honda Accord), a decent apartment (probably about $400 a month compared to about $1200 for a 3 bdroom (one for her, son, and ebony)), and went to an HBCU (which is typically cheaper than a traditional state college). This movie is still a classic.

360 Deal I will say that I think the professor character was meant to be a foil to Lance, not to be a stalker. Lance wanted Diamond to quit working at the club but offered her no alternatives. Here comes in the professor, who sees Diamond when she’s having all these problems with her parents, Ebony, Lance, Myron, Ronnie, etc who does offer her an alternative once he sees what is keeping her from being focused right before graduation

The part about Diamond dating a man she met at the club reminded me of the time I worked at a night club. I was helping out as a bartender because my ex husband was the promoter/host at the club. He would come to the bar and threaten me if a man talked to me for too long. I never flirted with anyone but bartenders tend to become therapist or if you look good, a man going to shoot his shot. Anywho, I got fired cuz he threaten me in front of the boss. So, he took money out of “our” home. Smh.

4:55 As to why she didnt still go to cillege and be able to get a loan, she was most likely still under her parents. In those situations, you have to either emancipate yourself or get an emergency exception from the school to get loans not co-signed by your parents. When she left home, she was more than likely 17 and went to her bf's place, and she didn't start stripping until she got to 18. In short, her parents' financial situation made it harder to get her own loans.
@AxiomAmnesia
@AxiomAmnesia 8 ай бұрын
I think your parent only needs to co-sign the PLUS loan. The Stafford and other loans don't need a co-signer. The only potential conflict I see is if her parents were still claiming her on taxes, because that will affect your financial aid. But since she had a child and was living outside of the homealready, that seems unlikely IMO.

Sex work is what I call it in the most non demonizing way. We have a culture that demand and promote sex work. Being told to smile as a cashier for minimum wage is no different from being pimped. @@AxiomAmnesiaI don’t think that y’all demonized sex work. I do feel y’all struggled, like most to find ways to name it and uplift it. But I don’t think that’s something y’all had to do. I am grateful y’all opened the discussion. There’s a beauty to the history of sex work that we need to talk about as humans. I believe it’s important and healing work. I’m not a sex worker however it’s not a job that’s X’ed off my list. I have Fam and friends that do it and I appreciate the lens in which they use when doing it. But there is another conversation I feel that y’all were trying to have. There’s a conversation about people (women, gay men, trans folks and even some strait men) expecting others to pay me for their time. I think the issue is at times in the situation people don’t consider it to be sex work. But I don’t know if I am the one to name what that is. Maybe it is an individual’s choice. Personally if I did this id own my profession and call it sex work even if I don’t have intercourse with them. It’s a form of labor. The individuals choice piece reminds me of men who love trans women or have occasional sex with other men, man of them don’t label themselves as “Gay”. Personally that’s fine and their choice. But what are the consequences for not identifying themselves? (That’s a whole other topic)

1:11:33 I feel like if diamond wasn’t tasked with having to keep an eye on her then she probably wouldn’t have even been to the club because Damond’s mother said she would take care of Eboni but then passed the buck to Diamond, so if Eboni was in the care of her aunt then she wouldn’t have been in that environment because that’s not the type of environment Diamond mama is in and if Diamond’s mama was the one watching her only way she would have been to the club is if she happened to run into Ronnie and Tricks and they got in her ear like they did Diamond

Ebony didn't even know what "really happened" between Diamond and Ronnie(and that's her cousin), so how would the bartender find out? I highly doubt Diamond would tell her. I think Diamond just told her she stopped drinking lol. However, Diamond sat by the bar, so the bartender did her job and asked if she wanted a drink to see if she was still alcohol-free. I don't think there was malicious intent behind it.
