I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to Ed's image. His image is that of a genuine bloke, and I imagine he is exactly that, but it doesn't mean he can't be intelligent when it comes to his marketing. When I was waiting for the buildup to his new album on social media, through the release of singles, teaser posts and so on, I found myself amazed at how well it was done. He didn't follow the formula for building hype by releasing one single, then another, then another, and then maybe the album. He basically had the double single, and more or less the album. But because he'd been away for so long, and hadn't built up hype for so long that people got tired of it, the reaction was instant, as people wanted more Ed Sheeran after it had been over a year since he released an album. He really demonstrates how it's possible to be a genuine person but not naive to how the industry works. Great video!

I'm not a Justin fan, but I'm a big fan of ed's music, so when I heard Love Yourself for the first time I was fairly surprised of how much I loved the song. The flow of it, the vibe, it was different.... and there were a few lyrics that for some reason would make me go "I don't know why this is so familiar to me, not in the sense that I've heard the lyrics before, but in a sense of knowing the person behind the lyrics"... Like, the irony in the lyrics. My momma don't like you and she likes everyone; You think you broke my heart oh, girl, for goddness's sake; I didn't wanna write a song cause i didn't want anyone thinking I still care, I don't; and, of course, the If you like the way you look that much then baby you should go and love yourself. So I looked up the song and when I saw Ed in the credits it was so obvious... there is a lot of Ed's witt in that song. He has a way to put the oddest sentences in his songs without it sounding stupid or out of place, and he can be so descriptive. The same goes for the songs he wrote for One Direction on their first albums. Little Things: You can't go to bed without a cup of tea, and maybe that's the reason that you talk in your sleep; I know you never loved the sound of your voice on tape; the dimples in your back at the bottom of your spine. Or Over Again: Cause our hands fit like my t shirt; hole in the middle of my heart like a polo; I can make your tears fall down like the showers that are British; can we take the same road? two days in the same clothes.... Or 18: let's split the night wide open and we'll se everything we can, living love in slow motion. There are a lot of other songs I could ramble on about, but my point is that Ed's personality really breaks through in LY, even if Justin co wrote it wiith him.

Here’s another thing about Ed’s marketing. He has the idea of using symbols to make yourself recognisable. His use of his album covers and his constantly consistent outfits and guitars, and the symbol of his loop pedal, as well as keeping a consistent brand while still changing his style was spectacular. He knows how to make himself become very simple, by becoming a symbol, a melody, a progression, a beat, so much so that while not everyone listens to his music, most everyone knows who he is. Many one hit wonders are what they are because they don’t maintain a consistent symbol, and almost every truly famous artist have an easily recognisable symbol; fleet wood Mac have micks drumming, ed of course has his pedal, mathematical album covers and red hair, and any artist that has sustained fame will almost always have this same symbol, to make them easily recognisable, because human brains go fast enough that we really don’t need to waste time understanding something complicated, when it can be as simple as a red head, and a plus

I was thinking of that last part just last night... Ed Sheeran has his sound, and he does NOTHING to change it, no matter who sings the song.... you can hear his signature on Bieber, Anne-Marie, One Direction and so on... I like that about him...Sia has a very different style from him, but you can also hear her signature in the songs she wrote for others....it makes me wonder whty Bruno Mars had to create a whole formula for himself...when he sort of already had one, especially with his first record as for Love Yourself....I think Bieber is credited as co-writer from the Purpose era forward... but not only did Ed write the song, you could also hear him in the harmonies, which was the first thing I noticed in that particular song tbh
@kaylamcook6967 жыл бұрын
I really liked this video! Ed Sheeran's songwriting, in my opinion, is the best of every current popular music artist. I love how honest and down-to-earth he is and his very "real" image, as you mentioned. He seems like a very relatable person, and his music definitely reflects that. I noticed many times before that in the very emotional parts of songs, or parts of songs he wants a certain amount of attention drawn to, he will do octaves, but I never really considered the root and major third thing you mentioned.

Interesting. Strangely I don’t listen to his new stuff but I was obsessed with his original albums. Probably up until he started collaborating with pop stars that didn’t interest me. It was his story telling that drew me in and as you say he clearly wrote the story first and then created the music to fit the story. Maybe that’s what I unknowingly preferred about his style.

I feel like Ed Sheeran has two styles: most of his music is what you discussed here. But occasionally, he releases more mysterious and groovy songs like Bloodstream and Shape of You that rely much more on roots, minor 3rds and fifths. I personally like that style a lot more, but then again, my own style revolves around the colder intervals. I prefer the weeknd over Taylor Swift anytime. So I guess I just like to listen to whoever manages to inspire me in making music myself... Anyway, just discovered your channel, very awesome content man. Got yourself a new sub :)

Great to see videos with a little more theory and different ideas. Why do you think slow songs with simple piano chords work? - I'm a keyboard player/songwriter. I think Chris Martin's songwriting would be a good topic. He has come up with so many 'good' songs and writes songs in different genres.

Kurt cobain would be an interesting one as he didn't collaborate as much in terms of the actual song like ed sheeran and Taylor swift. For example, in the Taylor swift video, when talking about the one note melodies.. I've found that this trait is synonymous with max martin and his team of songwriters who worked heavily on the songs that were mentioned.
@ryanleone30077 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. I'm more interested in songwriters, or bands, that have had great success with a singular style that taps into the mainstream but is not of the mainstream in the ways of a miley cyrus or katy perry, where songs are a product of a whole team working within the established trends. I would also love to hear what about Cobain's melodies struck such a chord in the early nineties.

Very interesting analysis. My favorite Ed Sheeran song is "A-Team." And that's my segue into Grace VanderWaal, because she recently did an acclaimed cover of that song. I see you've also done an analysis of 21 Pilots, and they are one of Grace's favorites. I would very much like to hear your analysis of Grace's songwriting, as she is incredibly emotive. For example, I can listen to "Beautiful Thing" a dozen times in a row and still get wet eyes every time. No other songs do this to me to that extent. I would recommend using the renditions on her EP, Perfectly Imperfect, as I think these are the definitive versions.

One way to learn where you are is to study where you came from. My older brother one time said that the history that the Beatles called upon was the music of Beethoven. I would think that the songwriters now had parents from back in the 60s/70s. Born in the 80's/90's and listening to their parent's music may, upon further study, show the influences of the modern songwriter. I just discovered your videos, btw. Very helpful. I mean I think this is quite a simplistic way to break it down. Metallica = E minor (because, as Hetfield said, "that's the lowest note"), lots of chugging and dakada dakada on that low root note, lots of power chords rooted on minor third, 4th and 5th, the occasional tritone to spice things up or as part of a chromatic movement, a fast tempo, and lots of high speed Em pentatonic runs from Kirk.

I think some artist you should look at next are Maroon 5, Green Day, Blink-182, Smash Mouth, Lil Pump, Lil Xan, 6ix9ine, Post Malone. Katy Perry, Bhad Bhabie and Tripper Red. Those are some example artists I have to suggest, and I will give more in the future because this Artist series is actually pretty interesting and intriguing, so I hope you keep it up. Also I found your channel from your recent RHCP (Red Hot Chili Peppers) video, and thanks for that!

The octave above backing vocals made me think of Julian Casablancas. Especially in the song "Fast Animals". It would be great if you made a video about Casablancas as well!
