Just a matter of letting the bass have its space, the vocals have their space, the drums keeping the time and the guitar maintaining its space. What isn’t taught early enough in guitar lessons is that while you learn the whole chord, you only need a portion of it when playing with a band. Helps to keep the song from sounding muddy. Triads were the big turning point in my playing!

One thing you have to understand is that most people who learn guitar just want to bang on open chords and sing (usually poorly). They kind of drag the entire enterprise down to their level. Triads are rudimentary music theory, yet guitarists seem to think it’s some sort of grandiose eye opening knowledge.

@@sigiligus They are grandiose eye opening knowledge because the guitar isn't the most intuitive instrument from a theory perspective and the cowboy chord became king because giving someone the keys to play basic songs felt like quick and fun progress (just like learning the basic minor pentatonic scale). It would be insanely easier to teach triads and do 3 notes vs learning all the barre shapes, but it's just not how the instrument is taught to 90% of players, regardless of whether they're "dragging the entire enterprise down to their level" or want to be the next Van Halen. My aspirations were to be more than open chords and singing but I started 25 years ago with what I was given; open chords. I was years into playing before I unlocked triads.

Ed was an amazing player, he was one of the best rhythm players, lead players and performers all in one at the exact same time and that was his genius besides his compositional work, he knew how to recreate using what he knew over and over and that is why the VH music whether DLR or Hagar fronted days still rocks and thrives on with guitarists….didn’t intentionally leave the Gary C days out, there was some great guitar work on that album as well. I like the artist focused lessons the most because whether it is John Sykes, Jake E Lee, Vito Bratta, George Lynch, EVH or Vai…it really focuses on the players that made us want to play so if we can pick up sprinkles of their magic and incorporate it into our playing maybe we can make our own magic from that knowledge.

Robert, Thank you so much for this! I'm 62 and have been playing in some capacity since I was 13. I am strictly self taught mostly by using my ears and centuries of trial and error. I use the chords that you featured today and the different structures all of the time. Until today, I used them but had no idea of their names or relationship. Today, you gave me a Rosetta Stone and I can never thank you enough for this gift! I've taken what you gave me and expanded it it a couple of layers deeper. All of a sudden, I know the outlines of a crap load of classic rock/metal songs and dropped the outlines of 3 new songs for me to finish writing! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! As Papa always told me, "Better late than never!"

much the same... dont get very far, then sit down and figure a few things out... hang on... that "CAGED system actually refers to chord shapes? yknow, nowhere in any "tutorial" book does it seem to mention that important aspect? c links to a links to g links to e links to d links to c... they just throw the name at you with some confusing diagram... i originally thought it meant "playing in a cage" like, staying within certain frets... yeah. too literal? knowing that opened up the fret board... and then the real simple harmonic scales, any major chord slid up/down a fret gives a harmonic minor. tied in with CAGED gives you nice "oriental" sounds... weee! also a harmonic major? or double major? one or the other... whatever, you get four scales from one major chord by just sliding up or down a fret. hammer on/pulloffs...

Hey Robert, I've been thinking about how you share your guitar skills, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you. I really admire your talent and the way you play-it's genuinely inspiring. However, sometimes it feels like you're holding back on fully sharing your knowledge or techniques. I understand this might be a way to keep things interesting, but it can be a bit frustrating when I'm eager to learn more and feel like I'm not getting the full picture. I'd really appreciate it if we could have more open exchanges about your techniques. It would help me a lot, and I think it would make our sessions even more rewarding. For example, I was really looking forward to learning about triads in this video. When my guitar instructor introduced me to them, it was a game-changer for me, and I was eager to dive deeper. However, I felt a bit let down that the video didn't mention triads directly, despite the lengthy runtime. I appreciate your effort to grow your channel and engage with subscribers, but I think focusing on the core topic more explicitly would greatly benefit your viewers and enhance your credibility as a teacher instead of creating clickbate titles like EVH "tricked us". Its more like he educated himself as opposed to most people who pick up the guitar just to get attention. Come on man....this type of content is disappointing with someone of your tallent level.

I was that way with Slash. Slash is the reason I picked up a guitar at 7 years old in 1988. The first Slash solo I learned in its entirety was the Sweet Child O' Mine solo in like 1994. I was so excited that I learned the whole Appetite for Destruction album. It was 1994, and I was a broke 14 year old, so it was all by ear. It was a months long deep dive into Slash's playing where I studied and practiced nothing else but that album. It's still one of the best times of my musical life. I wish I could relearn them all again for the first time. It was so much fun! I never did a deep dive on EVH, but believe me I was over the moon when I learned Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. I can't imagine kids today trying to learn Polyphia riffs. To me Tim Henson is the modern day EVH. Great video!

Now I have a question. For "Best Of Both Worlds", you used a "standard" Dmaj chrord in the heavier part, but the way I've always heard it, and have played it since 1988, is replacing the F# on the high E string with the F# on the low E string. I also simply move my index finger up from the F# to the G on the low E string, and play the open D, G, and B strings for the Gmaj chord. Have I always heard it wrong, or what? Either way, I'm going to continue playing it the way I always have, but it'd be nice to know for sure.

This is true…sometimes he would also leave one note out of the triad. He would often leave out the the A on the second fret of the G string in that inverted Dmaj chord and just play the double-stop on the 5th and 2nd strings for example…

Robert thanks so much for sharing this. It’s so awesome to watch these seemingly difficult songs broken down to a simple way of learning to play them. Eddie himself said that he wasn’t a great guitarist but a great cheater. Taking simple chords and riffs and making them sound and seem more difficult than they actually are. Having said that in no way is an insult to his genius and his ability, it just made me realize that the thoughts of, “There’s no way I can ever play that.” Can actually be achieved by simply “cheating” or finding another way to get the desired results I am seeking.

I always liked how Eddie was a shaped based player even when it comes to shredding. He always used that linear 3 finger shape when he would shred. When I discovered what he was actually doing I stopped worrying about the theory and just applied his shape method even with the chords you explained in this video. I personally am a visual learner and a drummer.. and its more fun trying to figure out how to use the same shapes, from shredding to chords, but making them sound different. Eddie made learning guitar fun for me because prior to learning about his shapes I was so flustered when it came to learning guitar because my teacher wanted me to learn from a theory perspective that I almost gave up. Then my friend showed me some Ed licks and I was like that's what hes doing? Ima use that shape approach instead. Eddie always did that Dmaj power chord with his pinky finger, too, like you hear in Unchained. Who needs theory when you can use simple shapes.

Similar to what ACDC does - simple repeats of the same things - but in different ways. Brilliant!

This is what the entire methodology I am building out revolves around. It goes so much deeper than EVH. This is such a good call out.

New subscriber. Love this and Eddie was and still is my guitar hero. I’ve learned through out the years how Eddie used a lot of the same techniques in and out of his chord structures and in his lead playing. I prefer the Diamond Dave era, but he still did some amazing stuff with Sammy as well. 😊

So, he used the "234" chord shapes that everyone else used and has been taught by every guitar teacher since the 80's.

So true! I have often wondered if Eddie didn't 'borrow' the use of these chord shapes from Edgar Winter's 'Free Ride.' The timing; 1972 was certainly right. I never heard him mention it, but...
