How Erik Ten Hag Will Set Up Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Transfers

Welcome back! After months of speculation, Manchester United have finally appointed Erik ten Hag as their next permanent manager. Touted as one of the hottest managerial prospects around Europe, Ten Hag has his work cut out, with a major rebuild needed at Old Trafford. But if given backing and the time required to implement his philosophy, the Dutchman will be a success.

Erik ten Hag’s go to formation is a 4-2-3-1 but with a highly fluid and mobile system this starting shape is largely irrelevant with players freely interchanging positions when in possession.
Taking his most recent Ajax side as an example when they have the ball we often see: Really high and wide wingers who stretch the pitch, a central midfielder joining the number 10 on the attacking midfield line whilst the other is joined by the right back as the left back usually creates a back 3 with the centre backs. Whilst Ten Hag’s starting formation could be a 4-2-1-3, a 4-3-3 or something else entirely, it isn't that important. What is important however is the roles and instructions he gives to his players.

For Manchester United it’s logical to assume that Erik Ten Hag will implement a similar system that effectively got him the job in the first place. Using the current squad of players available I’d expect David de Gea to continue in goal with a back four of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw. In midfield, United are without a player capable of playing the anchor man role, meanwhile, the offensive box to box role could suit Fred who would join Bruno Fernandes in attacking midfield. And finally I’d expect a front 3 from left to right of Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
At Ajax, Ten Hag made use of “Premier League failures” turning them from unwanted players for the likes of Everton, Southampton and West Ham to topping metrics in the Champions League. His coaching and tactical system will breathe new life into all the players that train under him at Manchester United but despite that I still think there are several areas that can be massively improved.
In goal, as great as David De Gea has been, Ten Hag wants a ball playing goalkeeper and that’s just not where the Spaniard excels. Ten Hag will also want a quick, ball playing centre back. Bringing Timber with him from Ajax could be great business. A defensive midfielder is a must. An area that’s been a problem since Michael Carrick retired, whilst United could save money on the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Tchouameni, I think spending the money on Rice is the move that provides a guarantee that the position is fixed. In attack I think an inverted right winger could be signed to add quality and variety to the forward options. Still not safe from relegation, Raphinha could be available at a cut price if Leeds get relegated. And finally up front. Cristiano Ronaldo is 37 and even if he’s still at the club beyond the summer United need an alternative. Gianluca Scamacca could be perfect. He’s been touted as “The Next Zlatan” as despite being 6 foot 5, like Ibrahimovic, Scamacca also combines his physical size with incredible agility and technical ability.

It’s important to remember that Ten Hag has had a lot of success by integrating Ajax academy graduates into his first team and with an excellent youth setup at Old Trafford we could see new starters emerge. Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, Charlie McNeil, Kobbie Mainoo, Teden Mengi and Jimmy Garner could all get a chance to impress.
Whilst there’s a lot of work to be done at Old Trafford, with Erik Ten Hag at the helm and backed by the club I’m extremely hopeful as a Manchester United fan.

💯 Maguire almost always leaves his partner to challenge for the ball while he drops off to cover, despite his lack of agility and pace and ability to physically dominate and challenge in the air. He simply isn't brave enough to play on the front foot without the ball. On the rare occasion he does attempt to intercept or challenge for the ball by stepping up, especially in the ground, he does it half heartedly and almost always gets spun.

In fact only two wingers Salah and Son had more goal contributions than Rashford (37) over that time period. Mctominay can be a useful squad player if used in the right position as evident by some of his performances e.g Burnley at home As for Pogba on his day he is one of the best middlefielders in the world. Considering the number of areas that need improving, I'd rather have four B+ players than one A+ player. Rice would demand a wage north of $20 mil per year, and Utd need more players that earn between $10-15 mil per year. The 2-3 superstars surrounded by average players model hasn't worked, and it doesn't fit Ten Hag's philosophy. I'd go for Kamara or Tchouaméni at DM, David at CF, and Botman or Kounde at CB.

I don't know If anybody would agree with me but I've searched for an Anchorman for Man UTD. After analyzing all data and watching so many videos I think Julian Weigl is the cheap and best option for Man UTD right now. My two other options are William Carvalho and Dennis Zakaria. William Carvalho is very good on the ball and so calm under pressure. He scans the pitch and passes the ball and moves into the next space so intelligently like Busquets. Dennis Zakaria has very good defensive abilities too. On the other hand, Declan Rice is the best option as the full package but Kalvin Phillips is also good on the ball and he can play as a 3rd CB too. Marten De Roon's name also is also on my mind.

This might be a more popular opinion than I think it is but I'd give James Garner a chance at defensive midfield. Declan Rice is undoubtedly the best option we could go for at the moment but that price tag is insane. It would also allow the club to get a few more new faces in, which I think is what we need right now. I think the club has to focus on a new center forward and center back and we'd have more to spend on those positions depending on what the club's targets cost if Garner is given that chance in midfield. After that a winger and goalkeeper would also be nice but I assume the big three positional targets are in midfield, defense and at center forward.

Love the scouting you've done on potential signings. I've never heard of Scamacca before, and Raya hasn't really caught my eye yet. But if Ten Hag wants them, these are the signings we should be making. Maguire needs binning though, you need pace at CB for ETH's improved system. Blind is slow thus has been put at LB last couple seasons and even there he is a very big weakness defensively due to his slow recovery speed.

Maguire out, bring De Ligt in and Varane besides him. Timber is a good choice, I'd keep him play him at rightback or 3rd choice (like Van Dijk, Matip and Konate). Buy Tchuameini or Neves, forget rice, too much, Phillips overrated, he's a slightly better scott McTominay. We'd have donny back and him, with Bruno and Tchuameini or Neves would fit perfectly as all 3 can do all 3 positions rotationally. I am a fan of Rice but we would still massively struggle next season. I'd bring in Rudiger/Timber, Phillips/Tchoumeni, Raphina and a upcoming striker along with some youth players. Try get back into the top 4 next season whilst implementing a style of play and then make a big signing for rice or bellingham the year after. That allows an influx of fresh hungry players all across the pitch that will also put pressure on the current 11. I imagine Ten Hag will want to get rid of some more players the season after so opportunities to sign players will come up as if we are in the Europa now, it'll be difficult to sign these players without paying high fees and questioning their motive to join a disjointed/struggling team.

Also, watch all of the goals against Liverpool, Maguire was at fault for all of them proving that he is calamitous at the back. the first goal he's way out of position as he pushes up thus leaving a gap behind him, which salah exploits and Liverpool are in. The second goal maguire doesn't go towards his man therefore Jones has to, leaving a gap for mane which he pings to salah and Liverpool are in. The 3rd goal maguire doesn't get tight to his man being mane- I know lindelof made the initial mistake but maguire could have made up for that. The 4th goal, Maguire first plays a hospital ball to mejbri and then tries to play offside, despite salah being behind him. This all proved that he is an incompetent, unaware defender. I'm not saying he was entirely at fault but that game and many other games show why he should be out of the starting XI imminently.

Honestly, I think we would need a budget in eccess of 150 M, that being said, I think that we will have to sell many from our current setup, such as Ronaldo and Wan Bissaka, and losing both Pogba and Ronaldo will free up some wages as well. We need versatile players defensively, and as perfect of a signing as Rice will be, I think we ought to look at players like Theo Hernandez, Jurrien Timber and Boubacar Kamara to be easily rotated. I also find the attacking players lacking, so free contracts such as Christian Eriksen and Paulo Dybala could really strengthen the squad too, or wyt Dave?

Antony & Timber along with Ten Hag from Ajax. This way we would be assured that we will sign 2 class players who are already trained to play in ETH's system and pass along the same to the rest of the squad. Also, those are 2 young players who can stay at the club for a long time and give us depth in the positions we desperately need. The only stumbling block would be if Ajax would actually wanna lose 2 of their best players in one window along with their manager. Ajax also have Gravenberch & Mazraoui who suit United, however, it is unlikely we would go for them because their agent is Raiola. Mazraoui is a free agent and a fantastic right back but it is the same as Romagnoli at Milan, who although is a free agent but is also represented by Raiola.

We definitely need more than one signing for next season. Big fan of Declan RIce, but he might be more avalible after the 22/23 season beacuse of his contract at Wast Ham. I would rather look for two new midfielders this window than one. A new dominating ancor and a more dominating passer, who can dictate the pace of the game. Next on my list would be a new dominating centre back and a young top talent striker. We definitely need even more new startes (like both fullbacks and a right winger), but its not realistic unfortunetly... Lets hope Mr Ten Hag also call up a couple of the young talents to pre season, so we can take a better look at them :)

As a Madrid fan of long time, I find it a little difficult to see why people have given up on Varane so early. Varane did the exact role mentioned in the video for Madrid at the highest stage paired with Ramos. Defensive partnerships that require covering spaces needs time to form and I think for the system, under a proper regiment Varane and Maguire can do at least serviceable if not sublime job at United. And I thoroughly believe if not, Varane should not be the issue.
