Hard to believe Men's softball was the first sport on ESPN.

If you saw the programming in the late 1980’s or early 1990’s you wouldn’t. They used to air stuff like World’s Strongest Man, or sailing races in the afternoons. The peak for this channel, like a lot of other things, was the late 1990’s.

Without espn we wouldn’t be able to watch Stephen A and Max argue for two hours out of our day... they were the only reason I made it through COVID

ESPN also aired the American Wrestling Association from 85-91, World Class Championship Wrestling, and later on, the Global Wrestling Federation in the 90s, up until its demise (every weekday at 4pm)

At 6:08, do you have the full ESPN SportsCenter intro from 1981? It has the dramatic disco tune, and began with the flares coming in, and the ESPN logo flashes when the flares disappear. Then, the ESPN logo sparkles, and the sparkles form the word "SPORTSCENTER", as vignettes of sports are shown in a fire effect. Then, the ESPN logo flashes, and the flares disappear to form the ESPN SportsCenter logo. Finally, the ESPN SportsCenter logo zooms forward.

ESPN was relevant and excellent for a long time... in the last few years, it's a sturdy decline.

It is a bummer to see them fall to such a pitiful state. It’s not just this network, any of the A&E stations, late night comedy, I could keep going. But the fall of ESPN and The History Channel cut the deepest. For me anyway.

@@jpmnky I think history is back on the upswing. Checkout the Food that built American, I think it’s a great live action documentary. Probably some of the best shit they have made in years

@tmmedia2446 I agree. They are getting away from the "reality " crap and are returning to what made the channel so good in it's first few years of existence.
