Into Europe: The Transatlantic relationship has been labeled the world's strongest alliance. But since the end of the cold war, it has entered a rough patch. American unilateralism, European defense spending shortfalls, and diverging interests have weakened the relationship.
In the face of a resurgent Russia and a rising China, can the alliance find a new purpose? Challenges brought about by Brexit, differing climate policies, and visions of the world will have to be overcome if the US and Europe are to find a new way to go forward.

EU cannot exist without an impartial foreign leader. Just ask the French, Italian, and German what they think about each other. The reason US "Isolationism" was popular in the first place was because anyone could see what a cluster-f European politics were and didn't want to get involved... then the cluster-f turned into TWO world wars.

The reason isolationism worked is because European politics was built by thousands of years of history of conflict, post WW2 some of those conflict were let go off and suddenly friendship boomed between nations of Europe especially West, the only real unhappy one would be what Italy towards France because Nationalists wants Savoy Nice and especially Corsica but no one cares about them, and Eastern Europe is merely due to the Balkans where im fairly sure its still a cluster-f for obvious reasons

@@macanaeh Well, although I agree; his ambitions aren't delirious. Russia's mainland is very much exposed after the fall of the Soviet Union. What's to be done about it? Well, the most peaceful solution would be being a bit more friendly, but eh, "trust" isn't an easy thing. Wanting a safe "buffer zone" isn't weird from a historical perspective. I can understand Russia's foreign policy in that context entirely. I do, however, also do believe there are other viable options to safeguard it heartland... In that sense we can also understand why Russia feels drawn to China as an ally as well; even though they compete in Central-Asia and China has ridiculous territorial claims in Siberia. The main threat to Russia is China becoming a senior member in a military alliance or building influence in the arctic; as these are things that would be unavoidable if Russia choses to side with China.
@macanaeh
@macanaeh 2 жыл бұрын
@@ewoudalliet1734 I entirely agree with everything you said, but that's the thing about Putin's ambitions, obviously it's quite dangerous potentially having Moscow (my home city) and Russia's heartland so close to the border, but it's important not to forget, like Putin often does, that we live in the 21st century Europe. Conflicts are no longer fought on the ground here. All the military conflicts against Georgia and Ukraine has done for us, was diplomatic isolation and escalation of the conflict with the west. In the EU right now any sort of tightening of ties with Russia is unthinkable, at least from a PR standpoint. If not for these blunders, if he acted less "army marching go brr" and be smarter and more diplomacy oriented about it, we could've positioned ourselves as that non-isolationist alternative to the US Europe so desperately wants. Of course it's a stretch because of oh so recent Soviet history, but there was a chance to "pull a Germany" if you will. That, combined with how his regime handled our economy over the last 20 years, with widespread corruption being the literal core of this regime, leaves us with out reliable allies, as China would stab us in the back given the opportunity, especially if we'll become overly dependent on it, leaves us with a stagnating economy, an inefficent administration and a population that becomes increasingly unhappy with the current state of affairs. So putting (hehe, pun) all these things together, Putin is, while not delirious, is either quite incompetent or doesn't really have Russia's interests in heart, doesn't care about living up to our true economic and geopolitical potential

the only way there can be good relations between EU and USA is if USA considers UE as a peer. To achieve that, EU needs to be more independent, that is by having its own military and defence policy (which does not mean leave NATO ofc), making EU a strong partner not only in economic terms. If that can be achieved, Transatlantic relations will prosper as Russia and China would benefit from division and disagreement. Tax related problems, as well as ecological and external affair ones will be settled naturally once the relation is stabilized. I nourish great hope for these next 3-4 years, hoping they will bring prosperity and solidarity to EU countries

Then take a second look on what the USA does. This makes the EU look like a saint in this matter. Is there one single entity out there on our planet, with higher moral standards and less capitalist greed, who does this better than the EU? Surely, the EU isn't doing a perfect job, but the US fails that one entirely. They obviously lack moral standards.

@@GigaChadlovesandcares Maybe there is some truth behind that saying. I won't deny that. But every single conflict that the USA initiated after the first Gulf War, was immorale, not connected to "perfection" in any way and didn't provide anything for the US, not even security. The second war against Iraq was insane and build on false proof and wrong accusations. It destabilized a whole region, where terrorists grow, local population suffers, and immigrants start their journey to the west. Syria is a direct result of this. The war in Afghanistan followed and did accomplish nothing. The results are similar to Iraq. Their worst enemy was located and finally killed in Pakistan, not Afghanistan. And actually all (hidden) big players behind the attacks against the US are still safe, like Saudi Arabia or Pakistan. They obviously didn't want to remove the root of this evil and focused on weaker countries, that have nothing to do with this instead. More driven by financial interests and aiming for ressources. The whole Russia story is legendary, when it comes to missed opportunities. Their state failed and the US missed the chance to make peace and start cooperation. Driven by old propaganda pictures and unmeasureable amounts of greed, they unleashed their capitalist swarm, trying to secure assets, instead of establishing a long-term cooperation, that drove Russia finally away from the west, back into old and dangerous behavior. China is the other "success" story. Decades of greed played directly into the hands of the ruling communists there. The capitalist world jumped into their trap, fueled by dreams of short term gains. Now the US finally realized that this is becoming a problem and starts felxing muscles. This was avoidable and should have been prevented decades ago.

@@dnocturn84 You act like we want the ME to be stabilized, we don’t. The middle east is much easier to handle when it’s stability is threatened because the Arab states jump into our hegemony for protection. Same with Africa and so many more continents, you act like our failures in Iraq or Afghanistan are a end to our success. It isn’t, it’s merely a temporary set-back. It doesn’t matter if people like it or not, but unless the Iraqi’s are ready to jump into the bed with the Iranians they will always rely on America for a degree. And as for Afghanistan, it is going to get into a civil war sooner or later. At that point terrorist groups will be fighting for control all over Afghanistan, and it will take a while before the civil war is over and before they can strike American interests. The only problem America has for now is Iran and China, China is getting handled pretty nicely with all the alliances getting build up to counter their influence and Iran is getting more isolated by the day with the exception of Syria which is in full civil war and will take around 10-20 years for it to have full working electricity around the country and another decade for the scars to heal. Russia is a bit of a problem, but it isn’t as much of a priority anymore. The true problem America faces isn’t China or Russia, it is Americans themselves who are the problem.

I agree. Many people here in the US tried saying that Trump was xenophobic for putting America first. When In reality he was just protecting the US. The wall on the southern border for example was made to keep out illegal immigrants that brought in many different problems. I'm not saying immigrants always bring problems into a country. What I'm saying is ILLEGAL immigrants bring problems. Why would someone enter a country illegally if not to do something illegal? As for the Trump putting America first involving Europe topic. I think Trumps actions are justifiable because the US shouldn't exactly be responsible for protecting Europe when they have their own country to protect. European countries don't really help contribute nearly as much as the US does in the military of NATO. I don't think the US should stop supporting NATO with their military. I just think Europe should invest more in their militaries so the US can invest a little less in theirs. I know it sounds selfish because then Europe will need to invest less in their own countries for a military while the US can invest more in the non military part of their country(or relocate military focus elsewhere). All organizations have their own interests including Europe. Keep in mind Trump couldn't have made such demands entirely himself. Trump had support from other members in the US government, so many people in the US government thought it was time to be tougher with Europe. After all the US is drowning in Debt and has many issue's that need to be addressed. So, it makes sense for the US to demand a larger military contribution from Europe. Allowing the US to use some money in different places. I will not say anything about Joe Biden. Although there is probably some discussion to be had about him.

For example, if little green men sneak into the Baltic States I want the European army to be there in full force without delay to kick their asses out. No discussions, no consultations, no vetos, if any member is attacked or even threatened the the full force of the whole European military should react immediately.

During Trump administration, a ties and relations between USA and Poland improved a lot. Secondly, after Biden got elected as new President, he also made a political effort to support Poland. Not only that, currently US is providing Poland with military support, as helping them to become strongest military power, while directly allied with US. Third, after begin of the Ukrainian war, Poland gained a lot of political influence, while openly supporting Ukraine, rush militarization, as well as criticizing Germany's failure on preventing Russian aggression. It is also to add, that Baltic States, as well as some other eastern countries, since begin of the war are under strong influence of Polish government.

I hope the current EU leaders back off with the idea of creating a political union, I’m quite unhappy with the developments in the EU at the moment. Regarding the covid approach for example, covid passports and digital id’s isn’t something which belongs in a free democratic European society. It would be something for China but not here. And the EU doesn’t seem to see the risks of keeping the borders open. I think the EU needs to take a step back to an economic and trade union whilst creating a mutual military alliance. A united states version of Europe isn’t something which I think would work and would be beneficiary. Too much governance from one central place isn’t effective. And with a military alliance and mutual funds for large military investments like carriers and the development of new technologies we would already come a long way. Furthermore I think we need to start relocating crucial production from countries like China back to our mainland.

Most South Americans have visa free travel to the EU for short stays and the EU has free trade agreements with many South American countries. Right now the EU is negoitating one with Mercosur as well, which would mean that all South American countries have one except Venezuela and Bolivia. Especially Spain has also many latin Americans living in it. But Latin America can not provide security for the EU and does not need it from the EU, so military alliances would be pretty useless. As for Russia their used to be an unwritten agreement for the EU to not expand to far East, which the EU violated and Russia now is going to the West again. Lets see what happens once Putin leaves office. But most importantly blood and culture does not matter much in terms of alliances. Both world wars were started by Europeans against other Europeans.

SA isn't reliable for them diplomaticaly as its track on humans rights, institutional instability, factionalized armed forces brings situations that democratic european leaders need to oppose. There were coups and attempts in Bolivia in 2019, Ecuador 2010, Honduras 2009... and lawfare changing brazilian elections of 2018. See, european firms are part of enviromental exploitation in Brazil even before Bolsonaro. How can you promote yourself as an environmental leader when companies from your country are dealing with illegal logging, polluting rivers, and when your partner does that more than you? You won't do the job of these countries' agencies that are under an environmental-hostile government, right? You're going to pressure them diplomaticaly. @@GigaChadlovesandcares It’s not that the French "mismanaged" it. France could have provided nuclear powered submarines if Australia wanted. But the Australians decided not to even consult the French about it or tell them anything about AUKUS beforehand. Making reckless and unpredictable decisions like this constantly will certainly start to create a loss in trust between the French and the Australians. And yes I know Australia has proved itself to be a vassal state of the US and UK. They were only granted independence in name only. When the British developed nuclear weapons the Australians were happy to let their territory be the testing grounds. They literally call themselves "America’s deputy sheriff" in the Indo Pacific. If you look at their media you will see them accusing New Zealand of betraying Australia for the Chinese because New Zealand doesn’t do everything the US wants. Pretty much every single war the US has entered Australia has followed in its footsteps. Australia might not be in NATO, but it’s hard to deny Australia’s close connection to the US. The fact is that Anglo’s have influenced most of the world ever since the collapse of the French empire, and when the British empire fell the US took over the position.

European countries have fielded the most powerful militaries for centuries. Saying that the EU needs US security is defeatist.

Those powerful militaries were used to slaughter other europeans. Fact: Europe has NEVER had a longer period of peace as they do now since 1945 thanks to US providing overriding security and pacifying European countries from going into an arms race with each other

@@LawOfNonContradiction Both are wrong. Some major conflicts in the 19th century in europe were the prussian-austrian war of 1866, the Franco-Prussian(german really) war of 1870, the crimean war in the 1850's, and I'm probably forgetting some. But it's not like europe was entirely at peace after WW2. There was a greek civil war, the Turkish invasion of cyprus, the Balkan wars which had a full blown genocide. The caucasus had it's share of wars as well, and ofcourse the recent invasion of crimea and border conflicts in Ukraine. The major european powers have had a fairly long period of peace though, but that's not the first time that happened.

@@LawOfNonContradiction Actually, the Romans held relative peace for over 1000 years. That’s twice as old as the us has ever existed

I studied political sciences, worked as a journalist and spend hours a day researching such topics. After all this time I can only warn you guys. Any conclusions you might come to are MOST probably too narrow, too unspecific or just too simple. Not because I know it, but I realized how I don't know shit - even after really trying. Don't burden yourself for no benefit, like I did. Being mentally or physically healthy has nothing to do with understanding things like international affairs.
