I thought that the Denver convention made giving most pull through sharpeners a crime against humanity and the convention on chemical weapons forbids tungsten sharpeners as it groups them along side compounds such as mustard gas.

I love these videos, Pete. Top quality work as usual. I've always wanted a way to compare a lot of the EDC sharpeners so your recent video on that subject was a gift! And although I've got a KME, most of my people aren't knife people so finding the best sharpener for "normies" is greatly appreciated. Henckel has a 2 stage pull through sharpener that might be worth looking into because of how recognizable a brand they are.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzbin.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

Another excellent video. I have a Lansky Blade Medic which has both carbide and ceramic pull through slots. I discovered, kinda by accident, that if I have a blade that has dropped below shaving sharp, I can restore it to shaving sharp by _very gently_ pulling the blade through the carbide side 5 to 10 times. By very gently, I mean little more than the weight of the knife. If I overdo it and form a burr, I remove the burr on a strop with 5000 grit sandpaper on one side and leather/green compound on the other.
@crispysocksss
@crispysocksss Жыл бұрын
The problem is that people use it too hard. I use an accusharp pull through after using my KME to get a razor sharp edge without stropping. If I form a burr, i use a plastic marker and stroke it down.
@budthecyborg4575

7:43 "Thought for a second that it dulled it" It did, those ceramic rods are much steeper than the carbide, and with any amount of pressure they'll be rolling the edge back and forth before the big fresh burr pops off. If the carbide actually did create a stable edge shape then ideally you'd just strop it after that. Or at most I would give it two or three feather light passes on the ceramics for the most microscopic of micro-bevels at that (way too steep for my taste) angle of the ceramic rods.
@rolandmasegosa8794
@rolandmasegosa8794 2 жыл бұрын

I used a 'Worksharp' for a while and it was OK to start with (I think) but then I felt it wasn't working anymore so I looked closely and found that it was actually ruining the edge of my blades! Somehow - possibly due to inferior material, it seemed to be actually blunting my blades as my knife had caused a groove to appear in one side of the material.

My mum still uses it and swears by it as the best sharpener she’s ever had. That being said she uses it for her kitchen knives & dad’s old Victorinox “Swiss Army” knife, which she keeps and still uses for sentimental reasons, dad passed away 10 years ago. Thing is it is a good sharpener for her, for what she needs.

Pull through sharpeners are really useful for floppy fillet knives. They are quite hard to sharpen with clamp style sharpeners, and bench stones are just slow when you're processing a limit of fish.
@Freakmaster480
@Freakmaster480 2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand. If all you're looking to do is get a good usable edge, not something mirror polished although for the more exerienced that may apply aswell, a regular bench stone would be signifigantly faster than a clamp sharpener.
@awwwshucks443
@awwwshucks443 2 жыл бұрын
@@Freakmaster480 in this instance, I'm really just talking about fillet knives as a reason for having a pull through at all. Bench stones are super fast for more rigid blades, but you also have to take into account all of the time developing the skill. Clamp sharpeners are extremely convenient and give such reliable results.

Ok, so haven't had any luck with either this or the field sharpener. If anything, they're making the blades worse (Victorinox SAK and Aus-8 Dozier). Is the Spyderco Sharpmaker easier? I would like to work up to a serrated hawkbill (really the best knife for my line of work), but I'm afraid this just isn't my thing.
@AYellowPepper
@AYellowPepper 3 жыл бұрын
so, if you are sharpening normal unserrated knives with the Worksharp Guided field sharpnener its 100% your sharpening technique thats the problem, its basically just diamond sharpening stones, just keep trying! A Serrated hawk bill is basically impossible to sharpen if you don't go tooth by tooth! I would just buy a single of the Spyderco Triangle stones and use them as ceramic files and work my way through each tooth... ... But honestly If its a Spyderco, send it back for sharpening... no other way can get you as good of an edge back!
@FreedomFox1
@FreedomFox1 3 жыл бұрын
@@AYellowPepper Thanks, I suspect you’re right about my technique. Folks at the Spyderco forum say that the sharpmaker works great on serrations without going tooth-by-tooth. I was also looking at the electric-powered Worksharp, which is supposed sharpen serrated knives by just pressing the belt against the flat (non-beveled) part of the knife... so that is probably the easiest, or just sending it back to Spyderco, like you suggest.

Technique is the key part about the guided sharpener and knowing what each company sets their bevel at case and point Victorinox do their edge bevels at 15 degree set guided sharpener is set for 20 degree set so you have to feel the edge out or reprofile and or set a micro bevel as it goes its a pain in the ass to learn at first a good tip I can give when you first try and figure out an edge use a sharpie on the edge of the knife and do a test pass on a stone and see where the sharpie is wearing off and from their its trial and error that's how I learned. Also Its a 50/50 for the sharpmaker for the average person the guided sharpener is a good portable system the sharpmaker teaches you fundamentals and has both a 15 degree and 20 degree options and its good for fine tuning work on it that's just my 2 cents

Let me just say this first, I love a good edge and I love this channel. That said.... I used to before I knew how to sharpen carry a lansky pull through in my back pack. In the event that my 600 grit lansky edges would go dull mid day at work on my cheap knives. I still carry it, because a workable edge is more important than people being edge snobs. I will sharpen it when I get home, but honing it so I can work more efficiently and safely is fine by me. It actually did save me once at around 11am I was processing boxes for my job and it was just so hard to do, passed it through ten times each side and boom flying through. I still sharpen my blades at 40 inclusive so it matches my pull through. People need to get over themselves.

You over did it with the carbide, you mustn't apply medium pressure, no matter what the company says. You have to hold the knife in a pinch grip near the at the most front part of the handle just before the blade begins.Also never do so many passes on the carbide, It only takes 2-3 light passes (keeping a perfect 90 degree angle) on the carbide and then you advance to the ceramic (Most of the times, it takes only 1-2 light passes through the carbide but that depends, how dull the edge is, what steel and hrc etc). Next on the ceramic, again, try to always keep your 90 degree angle and begin with light to medium pressure and then advance to light pressure passes. Standing on your feet and not sitting on the chair, helps to keep the 90 degree angle and not tremple.Slow and precise is what you are looking for. (not really slow but defenatelly not very fast, because you will lose the angle). If you always lighten the pressure as you advance, you will end up with a scary sharp edge, with almost any pull through sharpener. Is that a system that I suggest to people. NO, no matter if he is experienced or not. The worst thing about this kind of sharpeners, is that they seem the perfect sharpening system for non experienced BUT it needs the experience to make it work properly! Stones and or ceramic stones with kangaroo leather strop for home and ceramic rods with a leather strop for field maintenance, is my advise. If you want to use a pull through sharpening system, no matter what, the choose these, with round rods, ot the flat ones. PS PLEASE, they are called "pull through" not "rub on back and forth" sharpeners.. you can't keep an angle that way, only thing you do is to remove metal if you use it that way... The only reason I don't recomend these sharpeners, is because even people with much experience cann't understand how things exactly work. Also I know many people that sharpen professionally, all of them have tons of experience BUT most of them use easy systems like KME wicked sharp etc. It's very rare to meet a person, that can sharpen properly on stones and still I see mistakes, that dull the tip of the blade, (like when they pass the blade further than the stone surface) and many more mistakes.So, think twice, who is going to sharpen your expensive knives. Cheers

shadowdance4666 just mentioned on another comment I bought my parents 1 of those hand grip Lansky sharpeners with the knuckle guard 25 - 30 years ago & mum still uses it & maintains it to be the best sharpener she’s ever had because for her, for what she needs in the kitchen & with dad’s old Swiss Army knife she keeps & still uses for sentimental reasons it serves her just fine.

Actually the carbide channel is *concave* in order to create a convex edge.

The carbide surfaces are concave, the space between them is convex, surely. And the channel is the empty space.

oorcinus LOL! Do people you try to hang out with keep ditching you? Have you, for example ever caught an entire birthday party trying to climb out of the bathroom window, including the restaurant’s child friendly mascot? That comment right there, that’s why. 😂

I use a pull through style sharpener if it's on a cheap beater type knife. My knife collection is very varied in terms of price range and build quality, so if it's one of my expensive knives I'll strop it and use my sharpening system, but if it's a cheap little user knife, I'll use a pull through to get a quick sharp edge and go back to getting on with my day

I would think it would be less evil on better steels that are “supposed” to have a finer grain structure, whereas steel that has larger carbide grain matrix, it would pull out the carbides... or so the legend says.

I don’t want to be a knife in your household. I have to look away and turn down the volume like a horror film sometimes 😂😂 That spike though ... ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh 😭😭😭. Someone buy this man stones to review ASAP. Keep up the incredible content - we love this , even if it’s not pleasing for our ASMR😜

one of these days you have to reveal the secret of actually getting a sharp knife with a whetstone, i picked up 4 arkansas stones recently and have tried a handful of times on an old 440a steel blade and i'm getting nothing but frustration.

FFVIII! Edea's music is stuck with me forever. (I know you're referencing a different Final Fantasy, but that's where I first heard it. (Thanks for doing this review. Was just looking at these, as oftentimes I'll be doing irrigation in a farmer's field with no way to sharpen my knife. I usually just bust out my Olfa, but this will help.)

The Chef's Choice Pronto 464 Diamond knife sharpener is supposed to use diamonds instead of carbides. I wonder if this wouldn't wreck the edge as much?

It had the theme from those monsters you don't hit but give stuff to too. Also some FF9 music during the sharpening.

I’ve notice that knife snobs don’t like any sharpening system that’s easy and they act like their knives are precious. I’ve been using good pull through knife sharpeners for many years, nothing wrong with them.
