Would be interested if you could construct a routine with a reasonable D score which would receive a perfect execution score by copying and pasting from several gymnasts.

3:11 is very interesting to me. Everything goes by in a flash, especially vault, it's amazing to me the judges can see all of this in the half-second the gymnast is flying through the air. I'm a total amateur gymnastics watcher, but I imagine when you know this stuff inside and out the deductions would jump out at you. I wonder if the judges have slo-mo replays to aid in making their decisions?
@halfway7690
@halfway7690 2 жыл бұрын
Nope, judges don't have slow motion analysis. There's judges who sit at different angles of the routine. I don't know why they don't, maybe it's to save time or since that's how the audience will perceive it? As in, if you can't notice it watching in real time, we won't deduct you because there's no real point.

The GB women's team took a 0.3 neutral deduction in the qualifications because a gymnast who was only performing one vault actually took 3 practice vaults instead of 2. They're only allowed 3 if they're performing 2 vaults.

What are those green squiggles starting 0:25? It looks like a descriptive notation for skills. If there is a systematic way of describing routines visually (like I've heard of Laba notation for dance, I don't know how it works), please make a video about it and also some videos that use it to annotate representative routines (for me, I'd most like to see floor, vault and parallel bars). Like it would nicely enhance your video about Emma Malabuyo's E-score.

Hi - very informative video! Question: the video mentioned that the E score on floor & beam also include “artistry deductions” … really?!?? Judges really deduct for this?? So for artistry, judges want to see “eye contact”? Eye contact w who, exactly - the judges or the crowd?? How is a gymnast supposed to play a character *and* have eye contact w the judges while she’s on the balance beam? (I have never seen a gymnast do this) Do judges really make execution deductions for things like this? If so, can you give some examples? I’m just curious bc gymnastics scoring is so subjective anyway, but *this* just seems … like a stretch.
@FlipFlyTumble
@FlipFlyTumble 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they do! This is a more subjective part compared to other deductions but they generally make sense. I just checked, the 'eye contact' deduction was changed to 'failure to engage the audience'. My interpretation of it is that they should not be looking down at the floor and I guess I should feel engaged while watching the routine. Judges may not like the routine personally, but they have to objectively judge whether it's performed well. The eye contact and character deductions are on floor exercise but not on balance beam. Balance beam has its own set of artistry deductions, although there is some overlap between beam and floor. Feel free to ask more questions if you need to :)

Do judges get told the routine the gymnast will perform in advance?
@FlipFlyTumble

Only on vault (not exactly sure why). On the other events we just judge what we see. Judges do watch podium training so they might have an idea of what will be performed.

@@Hdw1998 No replays! Only if there is an inquiry for the D score, a separate panel of judges get to look at the replay and decide whether to accept it or not
@fionnaduncan8735
@fionnaduncan8735 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hdw1998 There are judges who are only looking at the 'D' score and not the execution. There's a 'D' jury and an 'E' jury. They both put their totals into the score. It's the 'D' score that can be challenged by the gymnast or their representatives. Sometimes a score can take a very long time to come through and often it's because the judges haven't been in agreement and will replay the routine to check.

Although I'm in gymnastics, I still don't like how everything is "for the points." To me, I don't see a lot of creativity, and lots of poor execution. Yet, these gymnasts are still awdarded the big points. Plus, the scoring system is way too complicated for most people, and I think it's very detriemental to the sport.
