21:15 Video Game addiction, 2-3x as many people with ADHD will suffer from substance abuse. 24:50 Play is gone from our lives nowadays; too much protection and helicopter parents. 27:20 A bout of exercise is like taking a little bit of Prozac and a little bit of Ritalin 29:50 Exercise in the AM before school or work. Boosts arousal, which is a big part of attention, and helps to start the day off much better - more energetic, motivated, interested and focused (eg. Doug Leone, Jocko Willink) The benefits starts to tail downwards around noon, after 2-3 hrs. 30:30 Use an exercise “snack” to pick yourself up after the positive effects wear off, rather than taking a coffee break. Move around, do push-ups or squats, run up & down the stairs a few time. 31:10 Effects of strength training vs aerobic exercise (it really doesn’t matter, matters more what you’re able to stick with consistently). 32:30 Aerobic exercise with a focus/coordination challenge is the best (eg martial arts, mountain biking). Focused dance is the best exercise you can do (Tim Ferriss Tango). There’s so much information your brain has to deal with, so it really turns your brain on. 34:50 Regular walks throughout the day are very helpful (especially for ADHD). Better to walk briskly or uphill to stretch and strain yourself. The more effort you put into it, the more your brain likes you. 35:10 In pre-school kids should be moving all the time-they should be playing _a lot_ and not worrying about numbers and letters until later. 37:00 Finland ranks first among the non-Asiatic countries on TIMSS because their classes are 45 minutes of study and 15 minutes of vigorous play every hour. They also place a tremendous value on their teachers, vs. here in the USA (graduate degree required and it’s a hard position to win). 41:05 Fencing - Ratey’s nephew was a fencer at Stanford. They do so much aerobics to get into shape, fencing is a very aggressive and active sport. Taekwondo is similar. 43:50 *What exercise does for ADD / ADHD is sharpen the focus and increase the time on task.* Both kids and adults will get pronounced effect of improved focus if they’re staying active and exercising. 49:00 Kids playing video games and being transfixed by compelling digital worlds is a net negative on overall health. 51:00 *Less time on devices and earlier to bed.* We have a sleep epidemic in addition to the obesity epidemic. Our screens and phones are always on - so addictive and soothing that it keeps people away from normal things like going to sleep early enough. 53:15 Force yourself to get out and walk in the morning. 53:42 You get much better sleep-and deeper sleep, staying there longer-with more intense exercise.

I’ve found that deliberate focused strength training helps me wake up and think better than other exercise. And Ashtanga yoga.

Really interesting. Have just dug out an old skipping (in the UK - 'jump' in the US) rope and will be using in those 'just can't started moments'. Thanks

Wait... How did video games and opioid addiction get lumped together?
@malindarayallen
@malindarayallen 2 жыл бұрын
The connection is not that much of a leap. People with ADHD are prone to addictions - whether to something relatively benign like video games, or do something much more dangerous like opioids. Also, people can struggle with more than one addiction at a time.
