Did the same project about 15 years ago. Found a 749s on eBay with minor damage with only 600 miles. Got it for $900. It was a fun project and loved every minute of that bike!

I had a 999. It was so easy to ride fast. Except for the heat! After the 1098 came around, some were taking wrecked 999’s and installing air cooled two valve 1000/1100 engines into them. I’d love one of those.

I don't have any heat issues with the 749 and I removed the seat/tail heat shield with the race subframe. Worst bike that I've owned by far was a CBR954RR, that thing would burn my ass and it didn't even have an undertail exhaust.

The costs add up quickly don’t they? I recently restored an old Monster 620 and I kept needing small/niche parts that either led me to marketplace in hopes of used parts or eBay. I also took a hiatus from the track. I bought a wrecked 2015 ZX10 for $1,500 last year and spent about 7 months building slowly almost purely out of secondhand parts. Just finished it a few weeks ago actually. The only things that are new on it are the slicks, battery and obviously all of the fluids. Then came sourcing all the gear and equipment that I wish I never sold. Now that I’m finally done with it and have added up all the costs I still went over budget and I could have allocated some of that money to my old Ducati Hypermotard 1100 but as you said - we are a passionate bunch and nothing will take away that feeling of being back on the track and having that adrenaline fueled ear to ear smile.

I'd love an 848 as well but I already have one track princess, gonna get something ratty as a 2nd track bike. Thinking about a 1098 for the street though.....

Good vid. I’ve owned a 748r, 996, 848 and a hyper 950. I get what you’re saying but I think if you would’ve found a 749 or 999 that had been maintained, you would’ve saved some cash. But either way, love the passion. Hope to see you at Jennings sometime!

It's tough to call, because every 749/999 I've seen (I keep an eye out even though I already have one) has been neglected. The people that take care of them seem to keep them! I know of one that's fully track prepped that even with transportation would have been less in the end but I didn't know that at the time, also I was impatient and doing it bit by bit allowed me to start riding again sooner. Been toying with getting a 998 or 748 but then I'll have 2 track bikes that I want to baby and that doesn't do me any good 😂 My dad's currently making a 748sp into an 853, although that project has been going on for years so who knows if he'll ever finish it
