Having lived In Scarborough from 1994-2004 this is my personal assessment for anyone looking to move to Southern Maine. The state is beautiful, you can’t beat the quality of life there, but, be prepared to live a simple lifestyle unless you are financially well off. The state is heavily taxed and when you combine that with low wages and above average grocery and utility cost, not to mention really high home and rental cost, southern Maine can be a tricky balancing act to have a budget to meet your expenses and still have some disposable income left for maybe going out to dinner or theater. During the time I lived in Maine the disposable income was not an issue for me. I took advantage of a lot of the free benefits of living in the Vacation State. Due to family reasons, I had to leave Maine to return to Pennsylvania and I must say our financial picture and wealth improved significantly and watching Pennies has not been necessary here like it was living in Maine. For those who like rural living and still want to move to a Maine, I would suggest looking in Northern Maine, but jobs are virtually hard to come by up there , or possibly try western Maine along the New Hampshire border. The housing can be somewhat more affordable than you would find in Southern Maine (Cumberland & York) counties. The mid coast region might be another option up around Brunswick and a Freeport areas, but I’m willing to bet prices are still going to be high there. For all looking to move to Maine, good luck, follow your dream, just be sure you do you homework before making the move. I made the assumption back in 1994 that since Maine was a mostly rural state, it would not be an expensive place to live, I looked at it like it was similar to West Virginia.

Should have definitely highlighted one of the best reasons to live in Maine. The crime rates, especially violent crime is some of the lowest in the country. That Maine has been consistently one of the safest places to live and Portland does have one of the easiest airports in the country to navigate. Combined with the general lack of traffic jams and the extremely high quality of living compared to other similar sized cities makes Portland such a great place.

Nice video.... Looking to move up there potentially in spring. The housing market is confusing. Based on your estimates and Bestplaces etc, the rents are on average about 1100 for a one bed, and 1700 for a three bed. But where are these??? Even in the screen grab on this video it shows 3 beds going for 3k. When I go to craigslist the one beds seem to be about 2k. Am I missing a local classified section that has apartments listed in the stated 1100-1700 range? Where can I find these listings?

The best places to look for rentals in Maine are Craigslist and Zillow. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

You will NEVER find a three bedroom apartment in portland for under 2500 dollars, and the average one bedroom is closer to 1500 dollars, which is basically 2000 because nobody includes anything anymore.

Thanks for checking out the video! Portland is a great place to live! If you find Portland is outside of your budget there are some amazing surround towns like Westbrook, Biddeford, and Saco that can be more affordable. You will not find an apartment for under 1500 to 2000 dollars in portland maine, but you will find alot of state funded housing that is setting the standard for how high rent should be, basically landlords watch the state of maine paying 2 grand a month for apartments through housing and they follow suit,...which leaves us that work fir a living screwed.
