Cruze, 15.6 gallon tank, 747 miles=47.88MPG. Jetta 14.5 gallon tank, 617 miles=42.55MPG. The Cruze traveled 130 more miles with only 1.1 more gallons of fuel. Even if you filled the Cruze with only 14.5 gallons of fuel, it would still have traveled farther than the Jetta. The Cruze is more efficient, the Jetta costs more to drive.

Vdub Guy I've owned both. Even accounting for the extra gallon capacity the Cruze has, it still does better on highway range than the VWTDI. But, it's all academic now since neither is made anymore. Being an owner of a 2014 cruze diesel, 46 mpg hwy is the least you will get with this vehicle doing 70 mph. If you drive 55-60 it will get over 50 mpg, flat roads with no wind. The fuel tank is 15 1/2 gal, but it will hold a total of 17 1/2 gal. It takes a while to stuff all that in there but diesel foams up when being pumped and takes a while to settle down. My car with a FULL tank will go 175 miles before the fuel gauge needle moves off of the full mark. +Jacksonkellyfreak Everyone has their good and bad with both companies. I bought a 2000 TDi brand new. It was delivered with a defective instrument cluster. It took 14 visits to get the bad from factory fuel injection pump replaced (went more than 10 months with a frequent misfire and despite the pump screaming, the dealerships couldn't figure out what was wrong). At less than 50K miles, the turbo failed, which is a very common occurrence on this vintage. Between the power window motor failing multiple times, and cheap coatings on interior panels coming off, and the other mentioned repairs, it had been in the shop for almost 2 months during my 2 years of ownership, and would have cost me more than $8,000 dollars for the repairs if I had to pay for them. I replaced it with a 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. I'm now at 196,000 with the original powertrain, save the rear axle. Repairs in and out of pocket have been less than 2K, which is extremely reasonable for the vehicle. In all, including owning a fair amount of imports - a '00 Nissan Maxima, a '97 Toyota Camry, a '99 Mazda 626 (wife's), an '81 VW Rabbit Diesel, and an '84 VW Jetta Turbo Diesel, the TrailBlazer has been by far the best, and most reliable vehicle I've owned. Yes, it gets terrible fuel economy in comparison, but I knew that it would. I'll never, ever own a VW again, even if they hadn't made the mistake of the century with their "clean" diesel.
@Jacksonkellyfreak8 жыл бұрын
Doug Goodwin I'm the opposite. I would never in my life own, drive or even work on a gm product. Everyone I've ever known that bought one has literally had nothing but problems out of them. I owned ONE, and it was the worst automotive mistake I ever made. it had 70 something thousand on it when it puked its rods out. Had clean oil in it, didn't burn or leak any, showed full on the stick. Never got an oil pressure warning. Just bang clatter clatter. Piece of shit. But my Jetta, which isn't diesel, has been one of the best trouble free cars I've ever owned. 185k and has only needed maintenance and I just did the timing chains on it, but they were the factory set. I probably would buy another VW, but I would definitely own another Toyota, and as much as I HATE and despise American cars, believe it or not I would consider another Ford diesel truck.

To get the diesel engine in a Cruze, one must also purchase the package that it comes with. Meaning that in order to achieve fuel savings, one must spend an additional ~$9,000, up front. And its not available with a manual gearbox. Congratulations, once again, GM for mucking up what could be a beautiful thing. I personally prefer the VW. (full disclosure, I own a 2012 GTI, 6 spd) The Cruze does have a bigger tank by 1.1 gallons. But if you apply 3rd or 4th grade math you would divide the miles traveled by the amount of gallons used. I apologize if the exact numbers are off. Cruze 747 miles / 15.6 = 47.88 mpg Jetta 609 miles / 14.5 = 42 mpg So even if the Jetta had an extra 1.1 gallons to equal the size tank the Cruze had, it would only run about 655.62 miles until it ran out. That science sponsored by Woodlawn elementary school. Again...I own a VW GTI. So the argument about the bigger tank evening things out is invalid.

DavEnzoF1 finally, a little math and the voice of reason in this thread. Fact is, the Cruze got 5 mpg better on this test than the VW. Fact!

I would argue that gas and insurance prices are the main differing factor. The downsizing trend is much more visible in europe, not only diesels but also petrol engines are made with strong emphasis on low consumption and emissions. We have mid sized cars powered by 1.0 (mainly Ford) or 1.2 (VW group) liter turbocharged petrol engines, which beat some diesels in both aspects. These trends are true for all countries, no matter how popular the public transport is.

Have fun running that DEF.. What a lot of people don't know is that the DEF actually has an expiration date. When it goes bad it crystallizes and messes up everything from tank to motor. Oh did I mention that the repair for that is not covered under warranty. I know this from past experience with heavy diesel engines. Its a 3000 dollar fix that comes out of your pocket. Probably slightly less for the small diesels but still not cheap none the less

My record with my Jetta TDI is 63.5, but I average around 55. It is an EA288 with a 6 speed btw

Jetta tank is smaller by a few gallons. MPG is usually conservative on Jetta. Mine got 55+ mpg on long trips which took me closer to 700 total miles at 70 mph AC running. The Jetta will hold up longer and be more valuable at the end of its life. Cruz is a nice little car.

Even accounting for a slightly larger tank, teh Cruse is a superior diesel to the TDI and Chevy didnt screw the pooch with dieselgate like VW did.

I took a road trip in my 2015 Ford Focus Titanium, 12 gallons and it lasted 720 miles! And it's not even a diesel, just a 2.0 4 cyl with 160 hp and a dual clutch automated manual. The Cruze and Jetta are also great vehicles!

That Chevy will NEVER last in years the longevity of the German diesel engine. Germans invented the diesel and have perfected the diesel for mpg and longevity. You will see the Cruze in salvage yards with expensive diesel engine repairs if the parts are even available. The VW diesels are still available and nicknamed the million mile engine for a reason.

Did they make the fuel tank smaller in the 2013 Jetta's? My record in my 2010 Jetta TDI was 640 miles, and that was in mixed driving. One thing to consider, after about 10K miles the TDI's mileage increases greatly, during break in its a bit disappointing. I liked my Jetta so much I traded up for a Passat TDI, wonderful car! While I like the Cruze, its a bit too small for my taste. We need Ford to make a Fusion diesel, that would be sweet!

Our Chevy Cruze is assembled in Lordstown Ohio. My Uncle worked there for 40 years. I'm pretty sure the Cruze was originally designed in Korea actually. But your right.. It's a nice car. I deliver into GM Powertrain all the time. That's where they cast the engine blocks for all the V6,V8, gas engines, and the Duramax Diesel. And the 1.4 Liter engine for the Cruze and Volt.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Cruze no its not its the same car
It is actually an Opel Astra but stripped down to be cheaper, changed looks and branded as Chevy/Holden (there is even Vauxhall in UK but they are just rebadged Opels). To US people, there were a few versions of Opels under Saturn brand.

A lot of upset VW people in here claiming it's unfair. How? Yes, the Cruze went further but if you do the math, the Jetta got 42.5mpg and the Cruze got 47.8mpg. Side note, I own a 2001 Jetta TDI and a 2015 Passat TDI but I'm not biased towards facts. That being said, the 2001 Jetta of mine got just the same, if not a little better, than this one while mine was fully loaded on a roadtrip.

Even prius cant beat Jetta in mpg because in Prius you have to drive like a dud to get the mpg, Jetta we can drive normally and get more mpg than Prius and its damn more fun to drive than Cruze, thats Y I tell Jetta and German diesel and DSG that com,bination is unbeatable, see if someone wants to keep a car for more than 5 years it has 2 b Jetta, Cruze wont live just like all American cars "use and throw", but Ford Focus is different, its proven in Europe Australia an Asia as well

(1) U.S. diesel was very dirty upto 2008. It would have poisoned the exhaust filters. (2) Chevy had other priorities. They wanted to successfully release the Volt first (which is a Cruze but with hybrid internals). Then they marketed the release of the Cruze Eco last year... and now it's the Cruze Diesel's turn . Basically they were rolling-out one Cruze model at a time .

As a reference, watch the Car & Driver editor Csaba Csere's review about ATS. He does not even mention once BMW, or even he does not even use the term "European feel." He simply speaks about the ATS and how a nice car is. While many others, including the Motor Trend guy(s) not only compare it with BMW 3 Series but try hard not to let ATS win over BMW. "ATS' engine sound terrible" This is the thing that Motor Trend and a couple of others found on ATS to defend 3 series.

I've done my own analysis with my 2002 tdi automatic trans at 85 mph with the ac on burning fuel from Kroger 46 mph all day Long 62 miles to work so 124 total fuel was cheaper at speedway at 20 cents a gallon got 42 mpg on 2 fill ups .
@perrylund39953 жыл бұрын
The 2006 Jetta TDI that I have averages 46 - 49 mpg. I wonder if the older 1.9 L TDI engine is a bit more fuel efficient. Mileage is tied to air temperature I note in my TDI. Optimal is 60 degrees for my Jetta. When temperatures climb to 90 degrees, mileage might be 44-45 mpg.
@bobirving6052 Жыл бұрын
Some guys claim 60+mpg with the older ALH engines. This is possible with a retune on the newer ones also.

to be fair everyone is saying this isnt a good comparison but...click the about and read the 1st 2 lines at least, this did seem like a comparison but in the end they just vertified the two cars estimated mpg at least driving on the highway 95% of the time. and they exceeded the numbers for both cars, i just wished they showed me some actual numbers and not just tell me...

I think its a good test, even if something has less MPG, a larger tank means more range, which is an important factor, how often you go to fill up should be considered when buying a car... Yeah no question I'd go with the lower range Jetta in a heart beat, but still

Running a diesel out of fuel is the absolute worst thing to do, my jetta tdi is great except for the quality of it. Motor is phenomenal and 6-speed makes it great. But the after market parts for the tdi make is 10 times better. Over 300 ft-tq with 50+ mpg, can't go wrong there

i have a 2003 jetta diesel with about 190,000 miles on it, its chipped for about 40 extra hp and it gets better fuel mileage than either of these cars, it got the same mileage as the cruze when loaded down with 1000lbs of car parts (not exaggerating, the suspension was completely bottomed out) over the course of a 15 hour drive. and thats driving through all sorts of different terrain, not just a flat highway.

@rueben4411 жыл бұрын
Actually the Cruze should be able to do more because they took it in start and stop traffic near the end which is less efficient than the all freeway driving of the Jetta.
@vdub581811 жыл бұрын
new jetta diesel is 14.5 gal capacity and the cruze is 15.2. No matter how you slice this one, the cruze won this. FWIW range can be based on a lot of things. Total engine output, curb weight, engine efficiency, engine condition, the transmission used, coefficient of drag, belt driven accessories, electricity consumption, etc. So one car that weighs a ton with the aero of a brick and a gigantic gas tank could have less range than a light car with a small tank that has a very low DC.
