Just picked up fly fishing this year, caught my first bass on a grub at very low twilight less than a foot from the bank I was standing on lol.

I’ve been fly fishing a long time in different places and this is one of the best pieces of information on casting I’ve ever seen. All of you out there that are just starting or have never fished in the salt, Alvin is spot on with all of this.

I know how you feel about people and their 20 false casts. It kills me! This video sure helps me feel better about only being accurate at 40ft or less for saltwater trip this summer. In fact the video is so good I gave it 3 thumbs up 😁

Brother your laugh cracks me up… life is too darn short not to be happy! The who saltwater fly fishing thing is shiny brand new to me. As mentioned in another of your videos I have been a 4-5 wt. Rocky Mountain trout guy for 45 plus years… so I pick up so much from you videos… non of us are too old to learn more and I appreciate you sharing the wealth of knowledge you have sir! Also… you have to show me that 100 foot into the backing cast 4 fish on 1 hook technique… I swear I knew that dude fishing the Henry Fork back in the 80’s lol

Alvin, great advice . I learned a long time ago salt water fishing that speed and accuracy pay big dividends. Pick up once cast , bam 💥

Watching me cast can be ugly, but after only a decade of doing it I could already hit a pie plate at 30 feet in one back-cast, 90% of the time. Not a dinner plate, a pie plate. It has served me pretty well since then. Alvin calls out the right attributes of a "good" cast in the right order, of course he does. Digging the channel, Captain Alvin, thank you.

Alvin you are very correct in needing accuracy over distance. Almost never need a cast over 50'. If you can, that's great but a lot of people start getting tailing loops and their cast just goes to hell when they try to cast any further than that.

Yeah that's so true, thanks for mentioning that.

The short game is the money game! Absolutely no doubt about it! I'm 67 yo and had a fly rod in my hand since well before I was allowed to drive. The vast majority of catches have been under 30 feet. Just like hunting- sneak up a little closer before you pull the trigger.

Thanks Alvin. Sometimes moving the boat or wading in a bit closer is the way to go. A time where a long cast can be helpful is covering lots of open water searching for fish. If you have a target then closer is better

Great advice and absolutely spot on. The only add I would suggest is to also work on an accurate backcast for sight fishing reds. It fits right in with speed and is way easier than going across your body (or off hand). Plenty of times the wind is on my strong side and this is the best I’ve found for dealing with fish that show up there.
@OwenWilliamsPhD3 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice from the master! Around 8:20, did you see that bass hit on the pause as the caster chewed his thumb? Classic case of us thinking we need to manipulate the fly constantly when the fish really wants to eat the dying prey
@articchar-lf3 жыл бұрын
Wise piece of advice here Alvin. Are you going to show how to tie that single hook guide fly to catch four fish in two strips? Seriously, learning to find where your target hang out and what it wants to eat is even more important than casting. That's why I don't practice in my backyard. Most times I have to back off because I'm stepping on them! Get that fly in the water! ...not in the air, not in a drag and fish free lawn. LOL

This is an awesome video! Super informative, thanks for sharing. I used to think distance was everything when i started fly fishing, then realized accuracy was more important. When I first cast, I'll let it hit the water, before loading again. Should a person false cast all the way to your target? I might land in three different spots before I get to where I'm actually trying to get to? Am I messing up by doing that?
@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing2 жыл бұрын
I would try to keep the line in the air. Every time you hit the water you could be spooking the fish.
