Coming from a "no rifle" deer hunting state I really enjoyed this one. I follow the philosophy that if it can kill a deer it can kill a human target just as easy or easier. We've taken deer out to 210 yards with 20ga sabot loads. My personal record is 180 yards with a 12ga sabot. Shotgun lethality is no joke especially when you have the optics and DOPE to back up the shots.

Back in the late 80's, I was deer hunting with my father. We got to the property and agreed to meet back to the truck at 11:00. I was hunting about 1/4 mile away, at about 10:45 I started back towards the truck. I was maybe halfway there when I heard a shotgun being fired. A couple of seconds buckshot was raining all around me, some were hitting trees and bouncing back into the trail. When I got to the truck, I asked him why he shot buckshot in the air. He said that a turkey was flying over. I told him that he almost hit me with it. Needless to say, that was the last time I ever went hunting with him.

When I started hunting here in upstate NY about 50 years ago a fellow I hunted with had a Remington 870 Wingmaster 16 ga with a Weaver K4 scope on it. As he walked out of an apple orchard he saw. Deer out on a knoll. He laid down in the snow and threw a slug at that deer. When the rest of us caught up with him several of us counted our steps out to where the deer laid. We averaged our counts and came up with 425 steps of a bit over two feet each so almost 300 yards. He held the crosshairs well above the deer. High enough so the deers back was barely in the scope. Drilled it right through the spine. Even he said it was pretty much a scratch shot and didn't really think he could hit the deer but thought he'd try any way. Made good camp meat.

This is one of the most fun videos to watch I’ve seen in a long time. Do more! You could try different slugs, rifled vs smooth bore, optics...all kinds of cool options
I think of the ballistics of 12-gauge shotgun slugs as being similar to that of Brown Bess and similar muskets. I appreciate that there is a big difference between a 12-gauge Foster rifled slug and an old heavy .75-calibre lead ball. And yet they shoot similarly, I read somewhere that soldiers could take aimed shots up to 70-100 yards with the old military muskets but massed volleys were effective up to 300 yards. Well, that's kind of the results in the video. That's interesting.

Due to the cup, the birdshot hits like a slug round up to about 6 yards...and no recoil. A friend made some similar rounds with some larger shot ..T shot etc. The cup wad made all the difference within 10 yards. A fully choked barrel did not have anywhere near the affect on close grouping than the cup wad.

Surprising that a cut shell did so well at 100 yards, amazing really. Also amazing how relatively 'flat' a one once rifled slug shoots at 200 yards, saw this before on Hicock45 channel (in fact at 230 yards, he actually achieved a good group).As for buck shot at 100 and 200 yards well think of it this way, it would provide useful 'area fire' if you were attacked by pirates in the Gulf and had no other weapon. If you fired 8 shots at a skiff manned by 8 pirates I reckon at least one of them would be hit. When they get closer you could take them out one at a time with a cut shell.

We had visibility, but field & a half away, it was obvious out-of-range, but being Mich Native, I said to Dave, "Watch this"!! My J.C. Higgins pump w/vent rib & comp wide open barked. Had led buck a shtload, aimed half shtload high, waited...& waited, buck launched in huge leap, pirouetted 2 revolutions, landing on rack w/front legs running until met Mr. Knife! There was just light skim of snow on, so Dave said, "Lookit' that!!" Breneke slug hit on back drew whole drop of blood, then tumbled about 20', so Dave, said "Want this?" Slug had tiny nick on edge where had slain buck, so luckier than hell, I loaded it back up,in same casing & next year got big 10 pt 1st day!! So anyways, that's the most I could get out of a Breneke slug, & effective range...I dunno...how far can such a slug travel??

Let's hear it for Georgia elevation! For home defense I'm well within 50 yards of my front porch to defend my mailbox. Should a crowd with bad intentions decide to wreck havoc (which is within the realm of possibility) #4 buckshot is my go to round. I might put in birdshot as my first round, but after that . . . this is VERY useful information.

Now they are motivated to go to the ranch with me and shoot shotguns. Progress! Nothing crazy, just some 00-buck at 15, 25, and 50. Can't wait!! They will literally have a blast.

get out the long single shot shot guns the 28" and goose guns and rifled slug barrels you will see the real potential of a shotgun 28" Stevens single shot i got penetration with 7.5 shot at 51 yards so length is strength with a shot gun.

Interesting video. At 400 yds, it looks like it may have punched through. That said, beyond 200 yds, I don't think I'd call anything a "reliable kill" past that range. Having to hold 70 ft high and 30 ft wide is definitely getting into pull n pray territory.

In the military I was taught if shooting pellets, aim lower (waist level) at the target because pellets disperses upward and wide with distance at standoff range.

Not sure if your post is a joke or not, but it would be several miles. There's been a lot of use, especially during WW2 where they would use the M2 for what is essentially indirect fire into enemy positions, treating it like artillery. Look up "plunging fire".

Great video. Watched it prior to attending a long range shotgun course using slug, 00 buckshot and #1 bird shot. Used the same 1 oz Remington slugs with Benelli M4 and they worked well out to 260 yards. Could get 3 shot groups 3-4 MOA with slugs at 100 yards. On video we could actually see slugs landing at 260 yards. With the bird shot and buck we could see the patterns thrown up in the dust since we were shooting from higher ground. Long range shotgun is great fun and to be recommended, if you get the chance.

Not many people would disagree, that one of the most intimidating sounds you would prefer not to hear, is that of a twelve gauge pump action shotgun chambering a round. usually that is all that is required in order to neutralize some situations. The bar fight scene in the movie 'Second hand lions' is the perfect example.
@fjb49322 жыл бұрын
Roger Powell, The racking sound translates into every language . . .
@ruanschmidt6207 Жыл бұрын
With all do respect, if I had to be in a situation where I had a shotgun and had to use it for whatever reason, racking the pump action to neutralize the situation will most definetly NOT be the reason for me to use the shotgun. If that thing's racked, it's not an opportunity for you to negotiate and have one last chance to rethink your position. Racking that pump handle confirms your position at that moment and negotiations have come to an end. The follow up to the racking will be sending a 1oz slug through your chest and I have made peace with the concequence that will follow as a result. If you need a gun to negotiate / neutralize a situation, you shouldn't be owning one in the first place. Guns don't neutralize targets, they destroy.

Once a 45-70 slug goes subsonic, the loss in velocity per 100 yards traveled, drops to maybe 50 ft per second. I've read that once upon a time, long range competitions were shot with them. The 12 gauge slug should do the same. A 525 grain sabot round that I have shot will shoot a rainbow trajectory but still have a good thump at distance.

The gauge doesn't actually matter very much, it's all about velocity and weight
@fluffykittynoodles8 жыл бұрын
a lot of people don't know that all shotgun gauges perform relatively closely to each other. for example, 410 double buck is only 200fps off 12ga double buck.only difference is between the payload of the two calibers.
@fluffykittynoodles8 жыл бұрын
+Art Frewin it's alright, you just reiterated what I said is all. I think a .410 double ought buck has 3 pellets? and like you said, the 12ga has 9. so obviously, the 12 will have more "ass" because there's more pellets, but each pellet individually has about the same energy across the shot shell size range.
@mcamodell8 жыл бұрын
For the extreme example of .410 vs 12Ga...yes, there would be far less pellets. For 12ga vs 20ga...no, they would be the same.

My late grandfather protected his home with 2 double action .22 LR revolvers for all of my life and longer. His philosophy was..." A blind man has the rest of his life to rethink their life's choices a dead man don't. Depends on where they force you to aim with birdshot now BUCKSHOT is a whole other animal especially inside your home. Everyone knew not to FA&FO so he never had his home broken into. They knew what to expect. He's gone now but I get it. Sadly in this day and age you might get sued for that since if your on trial like Trump and you didn't do anything wrong you can still get sued or fined. What a messed up world we have come too.
