Brilliant video mate. Back in those heady days of the early 80's I had already got used to front wheel drive handling having graduated from a Mini to an Opel Kadett 1600 (think Vauxhall Astra). I borrowed one of these AE86s (although at the time I just knew it as a Corolla) and of course what you do with a car that isn't your own is drive the beans off it. Imagine my surprise when, having stuffed it into a roundabout at some heroic speed or other (which I knew I could do in the Kadett), the rear-wheel drive Corolla decided to kick its rear end out. Imagine to my further surprise and elation how easy it was to catch, hold and power out of the roundabout! Slow? Yes, sure, but since that drive I've evaluated the handling of every other car I've driven the same way: how easy is it to catch when things get messy. For me, this car is one of the best handling ever built by anyone, ever. Thank you very much for the walk down memory lane.

"Gravity is a big help for us in this car!" Indeed, in the anime Takumi only battles when downhill, and mainly battles other low-powered lightweight cars (with a few exceptions). It's obvious he wouldn't stand a chance uphill against the cars that compete (NSX's, RX-7s, Skylines and the like).

Now to drive the overweight american cousin of the trueno AE86: the 3rd gen Trans am! It's true! They have a surprising number of similarities 1. They're both 80's RWD hatchbacks 2. similar-ish power/weight ratio (18 vs 17.7) 3. Same suspension design (Macpherson front & 4-link live axle rear with LSD) 4. both pulled decent lateral G's for their day 5. both have decent balance (55/45 vs 50/50) 6. both starred prominently in a TV show 7. POP UP HEADLIGHTS Some other cool facts about 3rd gen firebirds - At the time of it's creation, the 1982 firebird was the most aerodynamic car GM had ever produced with a drag coefficient of only 0.3 - in 1999, a 3rd gen firebird was used to set the world speed record for a stock bodied car, at 300 mph (484 kmh) - early 'birds had a base engine option for the pontiac designed Iron Duke I4. This makes them the last pontiac muscle car powered by a pontiac engine. - Early 'birds also had the option of an odd double throttle body injection system called "crossfire" injection by GM, though it's reputation for poor reliability earned a place in the garbage bin not long into the generation's production run. Please drive this overlooked but remarkable car, there is a mod for it on Assetto-DB.

The AE86 can go through corners at 60 when other cars are taking them at 45 People forget just how well balanced the AE86 is, the 50/50 weight distro helps make it the ultimate handling machine. Moreover, you don't need the power to go fast when you go through corners 50% faster than pretty much any other car. Pretty much, you see an AE86 in the rear view you should probably get out of its way, its just being nice not passing you, so you don't get scared; It has the full ability to pass at any point. A reminder that the AE86 BTFOS supercars on track all the time, so don't think that just because its the street it's any different. The car teaches the driver much like how the Mach 5 taught Speed Racer to become the best driver in the world. So, that power handicap is fine, cause if it had more, it would just be unfair to anyone trying to follow. So remember next time you see that "Little" AE86, you should probably respect it more, cause it has the full ability to destroy you and your car. Its a fact that some of the best drivers in the world drive AE86s, cause they know the hidden power that got machined into the vehicle. If anyone wants to refute me good luck, ill answer all arguments and blow you away finally if anyone wants to go at it on the touge, heh well good luck with that, I've blown away many cars, and I have probably made more than 20 cars including a Ferrari, 2 Porches and a gt40 crash trying to keep up

The only reason the AE86 was the fastest car in Initial D was because of the circumstances of street racing. None of them could really push it to the limit, but Takumi could use the 86 to its maximum potential because it's such a driver's car that he could control unlike any else. Street racing also explains why drifting was, in fact, the best technique for the drivers in the series to corner, because it allows a much more predictable slip angle and in turn, more control. This is similar to why the drift in rally and was even explained in one episode. The abundance of drifting also lead to an advantage to Takumi and the 86 because it lost demonstrably less speed in a drift compared to other cars such as the RX7.
@plethman36695 жыл бұрын
Very good comments, but drifting can never be faster than racing, racing is about efficiency, you need to be going the slowest you can and still be first. Spinning tires get hot an lose traction, they lose efficiency and cohesion. I love the anime and Tak is amazing but nature of drifting will never beat racing . Ultimately the fastest way around the track is to be fully in control of the car at all times. The fastest times on a track never ‘look fast’, they look smooth. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.

Hey Jimmer. Big fan. Weird question. Is there any possible way you could upload an actual VR video if its not too hard? That way we could use a VR headset to experience these amazing hotlaps first hand.

something to keep in mind though is that even in the first stage Takumi's ae86 was tuned to 150 hp and i believe it had tuned suspension. so it would've been faster, also under 9 minutes is possible with the stock ae86.

If they have the Bunta Special of this car I'd love to see you run it so we can all see the work Bunta and Project D put into that iconic tofu delivering machine in action.
