@@nautgamingnautgaming9949 My counterclaim is that Red isn't actually difficult but so much higher level that it enters the realm of tedium. The whole point of contention is that if you want the fastest Red time and that's all you care about then you just learn Curse and Rest on 99% of Pokemon and call it a day. I don't like that strat. It isn't fun to play and it's not fun to watch the same result play out every video. If you don't use those strats then only a handful of Pokemon can do it without some very tedious grinding that you have to do in your 60s and 70s when all you have are wild Pokemon that are up to 30 levels lower than that and that just adds superficial time to the final tally.

Definitely one that you never really got to 'use' under normal circumstances. It evolves so late and you get it at the very end of the game so this was fun!

I am mostly a Gen 1 runner, but I did play Crystal & Gold. These runs are really growing on me. I am just getting started on this video, but I look forward the rest of this one - as Tyranitar is one of my favorite, as well as any future Gen 2 runs that you do. Bruno's Revenge!

Yea, I've been pretty committed to doing a lot more this year. Generally 1 a month for the most part feels like a good balance. My only worry is that I'm just getting better and better each run and it won't be but a few videos in before Ho-oh needs a redo lmao.

I may be wrong, due to not playing Gen 2 nearly as much as Gen 1, but from an observer's point-of-view, it seems like Gen 2 has a good bit more optimizations available to the runner. The length of the game, plus the new moves open up so many different strategies IMO. Look forward to more & Tombstoner Brother!

The main thing is Hidden Power is your one get out of jail free card if you need it but there is a lack of things like Thunderbolt/Flamethrower/etc until post game. If you learn the elemental punches then you just cruise. It's a fun process overall but in a video or two we'll have it down I think.

I loved this so much, the Wilhelm Scream on the rocket dude that was attacked by dragonite, the routing of the HM mons to save time, and especially the Tyranitar at the end with all his items lol. I remember talking to you about doing this run in comments on a previous video and I’m so happy you did, this made my day^^ even got bonus footage with no rest+curse strats! (Even though using detect to abuse Venusaur’s ai was pretty sick imo). You went above and beyond for this one!

Yea! This one taught me a lot about Crystal and how I'll handle it going forward. I did the items in post on this one but I have got the tech now very soon to start doing damage sprites as well as held items in the actual overlay. I've been testing it on stream a few weeks now and It's ready for a video soonish. I think I'll do the Wilhelm scream every video, lmao. But yea I thought this one was good. Overall I'm just trying to streamline my process so that I can put a little more care into things. Going forward we'll note the time after Blue and see if a Pokemon needs curse/rest and then show what level it would need to be to make it consistent without it.

This was kind of the test for that. I've since coded into my overlay and I think we can get these dynamically into the run. I've been testing out damage sprites and I think after next week's cross gen run with Tinkaton it'll start to be in every video.

I've planned and recorded the footage for the next one already and I had to double check but I don't think I did. I guess the E4 isn't as important in this game but if I remember I'll see what I can do. They added a cool flag in the code to gen 1 for when you beat the champion and I'm not 100% sure it's in gen 2 but I'll see if I can maybe tie it to the Hall of Fame room or something.

Yea, that one is here to stay. From the last video onward I'll have parameters for damaged sprite states and held items in gen 2 show up on the overlay. It's a little more work to create custom damaged sprites but it's worth it.

I think that one way you could hammer home how much planning goes in to a particular battle you could make a small grayed out box with footage of you getting backhanded in said battle. I'm sure it's way easier said than done. Love the videos.

The main thing is that for the sake of time I don’t record the first couple of playthroughs so I can just get through at my leisure to plan out. I’d be far less productive on the channel if I had to record like 3-4 hours of footage for every run and wade through hours of footage to splice onto the screen. Rarely I’ll do a first attempt into the optimized run like the next video coming up but it’s rare because it takes a good bit longer to do and this is just a little side hobby for me.

Here's a thought: Maybe you could end the official timing at Blue, ban rest / curse for Red, but hack in rare candies just for the Red battle. Then you could see what it takes for each pokemon to beat Red on their own terms without impacting the leaderboard or taking hours out of your day.

Bruno's Revenge! WOW old Bruno came a LONG way since gen 1 (when even zero DV guy was making Bruno jokes)! Yeah, this pokemon is particularly vulnerable to hos attacks, but still... Bruno's gone into training in his dark basement, in the mountains, to defeat his limits, and the Shadow Man (reference to that american pro football player who went into his dark basement to battle The Shadow Man -- whatever that means)...

Well for whatever reason in Red/Blue/Yellow they just gave him bad AI. If his Machamp or even Hitmons had good AI then they could really do well. In some Sanqui videos I do where he does have good AI, he does alright but it's just weird to code an Elite 4 member to just use random moves.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 from what I'm told another factor is the fact that he's a phsyical attacker (assuming that's because almost any challange pokemon that gets to him will have LONG had an answer to his physical attacks.) It all adds up together to big isssue for him. Gen 2 appears to fix many of his issues.

I think using Blue time and Red time as a composite score along with resets is a good idea, and you can extrapolate your earlier Blue times from your videos

It forces this meta where 99% of the runs will just use the same exact strategy to take down the 'hardest' challenge. The only other alternative is to spend a good chunk of time grinding 10+ levels just because of the bad leveling curve of the game and that means probably picking up like 30+ level 30 trainers when I'm in my 60s which would just make me outlevel content more. It's not engaging to play, watch, and it makes the game even less trivial. It's not banned, per say, but Red just isn't a timed part of the game and Pokemon that can do it without it will get a bonus in my book.

Oh yea. It's something I've been working on a while. I think we'll finally see them in every video and probably see them implemented better in the next one. Also, damaged sprites at 50% health and a faint sprite are something I've been testing on stream.

Plus, if you have an older video you didn't like, it's a great excuse to revisit them and make new content trying to either outplay your past self, or just to redo the run with all the new bells and whistles.

I've been redoing all my older stuff pre-tech and better skill on streams generally once a week. I try to refrain from remaking or redoing all the older content. Sometimes there's something special but I think it's a good thing to stream.

It does not. Sounds like a later Gen ability but even so, his is sandstream or whatever there.

It helped a lot being that most Rock/Ground and Steel types are slower it gives them that chance to avoid a hit or two giving them a chance to get a little offense in. But I wasn’t sure if it applied in Gen 2 or not.

I think other pokemon have abilities to boost evasion in certain weather but to my knowledge even in the latest games it's Sand Stream, which casues sandstorm automatically, or Unnerve that doesn't let the opponent use berries.

It blows my mind that the y made Dark type with BITE and CRUNCH special and ghost type with Shadow Ball physical. Clear as day that they should be swapped.

I think they came up with the types and what they do first and then designing a Pokemon like Ttar was just secondary. Ghost was physical to counter Psychics but they forgot to actually give it moves and it was one of the last types added and they messed up and made psychic immune to it lol.

I enjoy the cross gen runs a lot but after some really intensive research and fiddling, I think I have a base to at least start building Ray on. New tech too. I was so focused on Dragon Ascent and doing some code that doesn't exist anywhere else that I stumbled into inventing the omni boost for Ancient Power lol.
