How Fast Can You Beat Pokemon Red/Blue with Just a Kangaskhan?

I'm curious how your take on a Tauros run would go considering it's pretty much Kangaskhan with higher special and speed.

I think it would be about the same, if not a little worse. Just because the one thing that doesn't show up on the stat sheet is the slow leveling group. I think that would slow it down.

It always felt like Kangaskhan had better stats than it actually had (like legendary levels). It was always so tanky and hit hard, which made it the most difficult pokemon for me to deal with on Giovanni's team, before he inexplicably gets rid of it for no reason. Whenever I think of the Safari Zone, I always think of Tauros first... I blame the anime for that. Great run, his special held him back considerably, wish it was 60 in gen 1 to keep it between his 40/80 special split from gen 2 onwards.

True. I guess Tauros and Kang are 1 and 2 easily. I personally just got tired of losing to it and I was like 'what are this things stats' and I thought it looked pretty good! Someone said it had bad stats but outside of the special, I think it has a pretty nice spread tbh.

I think Ghost Tower Rival can routinely be skipped (with a simple verbal note in your script mentioning that you crushed him), with the exception of weak pokemon that struggle to beat him.

I feel I've been a little stagnant on the work as of late but I think by the time August comes around I'll have some new things to show off but don't expect it in the next few videos. Working with some software to increase the experience and I've basically been in the hyperbolic time chamber the last few weeks doing a Pokemon Yellow Parasect x4 speed solo run race for Scott's Thoughts channel. Something fun that’s absolutely broken is the Japanese version of Gen 1. Blizzard was made 30% chance to freeze. It makes it always the correct move to use and blastoise the hardest rival Pokémon to face at the end. Also all the trade evolutions are available as in game trades so you don’t need a second copy of the game to trade for them

Alot of good runs don’t even need resets! If pure consistency is your goal then leveling up is always the option but I’d imagine it’s up to the player to make those decisions.

3:20 did nobody catch this??? You got a Rage miss due to sand attack, which forces all subsequent Rage uses to have 1/256 accuracy. Then the following Rage hit connected, just like that! Did the patch you're using make a change there?

I did not make a change and I watched and researched some myself. I have no clue. My roms are basic outside of fastest text being on so that’s interesting! My only guess is that maybe the game counts Gen 1 misses and sand attack accuracy drops different and I actually Gen 1 missed? If not, I have no clue! I know some people fluent in the disassembly but this is probably such a rare case it’ll likely not ever occur again haha.

Cheers Matt, really excited for this one, really curious about the result, some fun pros but unfortunately some big cons. Still like the pokemon, 40 special is awful in gen 1 because he's super weak to Stab special moves which makes most tough trainers and long battles an issue I think. Edit: I always thought Kangaskhan was better stats-wise, you can't even say he has a good spread of stats because his special is awful, he gets 80 sp def after the split but for him to be viable he should have like 125 attack or something or 140 hp, he just needs a bit more in one stat in order to just fill a niche, as is I'm very surprised with how bad he is. Maybe it's just because I like the pokemon that I thought he was better. Because he's normal, has decent attack and has stab hyperbeam, as well as only being weak to fighting and immune to ghost gives him some good spots, (not that it matters in this gen) if he had 135 ish HP he would work great because he could tank a lot of powerful physical moves even fighting and could even stand up to a powerful special attacker for a turn, not sure what gen I'm talking about because I have no idea what's viable but it would be cool if he was just a bit better and had a niche he was great at because it's a really cool pokemon. Edit 2: Really good job Matt, great run, you also covered everything fantastically

Kangaskahn eventually got it's spotlight and even got banned because of it's superb mega evolution. The baby comes out and every move does 50% more on top of the increased base stats. It's pretty nutty.

I think Rival 4 can be skipped over if he ends up being too easy, though he must be shown if a pokemon happens to struggle against him. On another note, I did a Lopunny run. Completed it for a friend of mine since she loves Lopunny. Honestly surprised how well that run went. 4:16 on animation%. Just goes to show how a solid movepool makes a world of difference even on pokemon with a less-than-stellar stat distribution. (although 1:14 of that time went to Brock...)

Oh god, Lopunny. I was pulling up roms to see how they interact with some Gen 1/2/3 software I’m using and volcorona looks like a beast but I haven’t done a full run. I’m on about Parasect run #100 for the race. On a side note I’ve done Pokémon yellow so much lately that I’m about to look for a solution to how superior yellow looks. The sprites and actual color look so damn good in comparison. It’s so beautiful lol.

I mean, I guess Erika still having Gloom makes sense in context to the anime, but what about Blaine? What happened to his Magmar and Rhydon? Honestly, I hope a Sanqui-like tool develops for Generation 2. That's the pokemon generation I grew up in, and I'd be stoked to do some runs with later-gen pokemon in GSC.

Also, unless I’m mistaken, bide always does double the damage received regardless of stats and buffs, so that would explain why you didn’t take a ton of damage against Brock even after all the screeches. Tackle becomes a bigger threat at that point. Additionally, I think Jrose asked that question in regards to multi-hit moves and someone in the comments said only the first hit is counted towards bide, but I might be remembering that wrong. Either way, seems pretty simple to lab out if you wanted to

Not technically. It's 20 base power regardless and it'll never be as strong as tackle but since you are locked into it, the +2 stages to attack might make it stronger but I'm not going to look up Kangaskahn simulations lol. I redid the run on stream a while ago and needless to say, Rage didn't get used once lol.

I wasn't arguing that it was in any way useful, I was actually specifically pointing out how incredibly bad it is. Even in the best case scenario of your opponent hitting you with weak moves. Jump to all these hoops, get lucky, and you get your very own bite with extra downsides as the best case result.

@@MeriadocMyr Ha, I'd never argue in the comments, I was just saying that the move never actually gets stronger. It's just increasing your attack by a stage. It was useful in the Ditto run though. There was a least a battle or two that locking yourself into rage made things possible.

Eventually. I got a lot of requests but October is for some dark/ghost/psychic stuff that I’m working on now and there’s a couple of single stages that are up after. Kingler should be solid but I think Tentacruel will do really well.

I can't say that I understand the algorithm or do this for a living so your guess is as good as mine. Views matter in the first couple of days in the video but the ad revenue and views are going to be the same regardless of when you do.
