Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- *In gen1, evasion boosting is allowed if the Pokemon does it through means other than learning the move by level up or TM. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed. (This exception is to keep ranking consistent with my legacy videos.)
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons all my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- All in-battle glitches are allowed in generation 1
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1, banned in gen2, and allowed for bypassing terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
-- The ability Pickup can only be used if the starter has it

If I recall, the teams for trainers in Red and Blue specifically have the moves they would have learned by that level. In Rhydon's case those are the moves it would learn in its level up set by that level and they just happen to be a particularly terrible combination. Obviously, they manually updated some movesets for Yellow version, hence the better teams, along with the other moveset changes to account for the Pikachu start.

I rather doubt Screech was ever meant to be a triple debuf. Most likely Tail Whip and Leer were always two versions of the same move and it's just an esoteric quirk that Pokémon like Rhyhorn learn both. If they were ever different, however, I would imagine Leer might have been a single stage debuf for the special stat. It makes sense insofar as we have Growl for lowering attack, Tailwhip for lowering defense, Stringshot for lowering speed, but no equivalent move for special. Shame too, as a special lowering move might have helped mitigate Psychic-types from being quite so overpowered.
@HighPriestFuneral
@HighPriestFuneral Жыл бұрын
Now that I think on it, it makes little sense that Leer decreases defense. It feels like its supposed to unnerve the opponent, which would be a mental matter, not a physical one. (But heaven forbid, Special is touched in Generation 1!)

This is a fun idea! :D I typically just phone my mum, but this is so much better. My mum also is a great listener to my obsession. She even remembers some pokemon - specifically Gengar because one of her patients and me own the same plush. My memory of Gen1 Rage is very similar to yours, except I had used it on my Charmeleon. Not being able to save at the drop of a hat while in battle was a great frustration to my father especially, who felt the game was gaining control over me, which, with the way Rage worked back then, wasn't entirely inaccurate - something he didn't need to know, but is very funny to think about nowadays. Mechanically, I actually love the idea of Rage. They later re-did the concept with moves like Rollout and Fury Cutter, but Rage is the only one of these that has perfect accuracy and still lets you choose to forfeit your rage counter, making it the best version of the "use continuously to power up" in these games. When they later made Echoed Voice, I was pretty happy, altough sadly I rarely get to use it.

Amazing results. I have mentioned this before, but it just shows how important the Pokemon's level-up group is. I realize this was a Kangaskan vs Kangaskan video, but I mean when compared to a Pokemon like Tauros. Tauros should crush Kangaskan, but it just does not happen that way. I saw a similar thing on Gym Leader Matt's recent Golem video. It kicked Rhydon to the curb, where if you just look at their base stats, Rhydon should roll. Anyway, I really liked this comparison. I was hppy to see Yellow do so well. I also wanted to say thank you for your decision to provide more options with your content. I believe the stream highlights are going to be a huge addition for you, and even though I try to catch your livestream runs too, this is in a format that I can easily consume while I am multitasking.
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon
@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Жыл бұрын
Yeah, Golem is way better than Rhydon in this format exclusively because of its growth-rate. I never knew that it would matter as much as it does. Now it’s the first thing I check when planning a new run. It helps me set my expectations appropriately.
@cduke_Net_Architect
@cduke_Net_Architect Жыл бұрын
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Exactly - it is really something man. Honestly, I have only recently learned how important it is - by watching so many of you and several others who do solo runs. The thing about Golem versus Rhydon is that there is even more to it than just the level-up group. Golem has access to a Badge Boosting move, whereas Rhydon does not. I am not sure which of those two is actually more important. I am curious and would love your thoughts on that subject. Basically, between a Pokemon having a "good" or a "bad" level-up group and whether or not they natively have a Badge Boosting move - which do you think is more important, which can take a Pokemon further, how much better is having both versus only having one or the other, versus having neither, etc? Thank you for taking the time to "talk shop" with me - I really appreciate it.

I have a different theory on Tail Whip and Leer. I think Tail Whip (Tail Wag in its original Japanese name) lowers defence as the user is acting playfully and cutely wagging its tail to lower the opponent's guard. Leer however stares down the opponent making them more self-conscious, and being relaxed with moves like Amnesia and Calm Mind tends to be the basis of Special raising moves - so I think Leer was supposed to lower Special until it was found lowering Special was too powerful on a 100% accurate status move; so they probably changed it to lowering defence.

Surf on Pikachu/Raichu trivializes any Rock/Ground type match-ups and it would make Blaine less troublesome. Also depends how soon you'd permit it as I'm pretty sure you only need Pikachu as part of your team and the transfer pak so theoretically you could get it at the start but it wouldn't be realistic to fulfill the conditions to allow it to learn Surf in Stadium as you need to clear Round 2 of Master Ball level Prime Cup.

It's a good thing you didn't go for rage against the light years jr. trainer because if rage misses, it can never hit again and it's an instant reset. I'm not that far into the video yet, but I had to comment on that. Rage is such a buggy move in gen 1. If you could choose to use it as an attacking move that can raise your attack stat, it would be pretty great actually. But locking you in forever is just awful, even if it gives the move an insanely huge PP.

You seem to be an expert on these games, so I'm surprised you haven't realised that EVERY Pokemon in Red/Blue just has their level-up moves (the same as wild Pokemon). That's why Rhydon has Tail Whip and Leer. That's why Lance's 2 Dragonair are identical. That's why loads of Pokemon have Roar and Whirlwind, that's why Exeggutor only has 3 moves. And so on. The only exceptions to this are the ace of each Gym Leader who have the gym leader's TM moves, the ace of each Elite 4 member (Lapras is Blizzard I think, Machamp is Fissure, Gengar is Toxic, Dragonite is Barrier), the champion's Pidgeot (Sky Attack) and the champion's starter (Blastoise is Blizzard, Venusaur is Mega Drain, I can't remember Charizard's, I thin it's Fire Blast?). These moves are always in the 3rd slot in their moveset. It's odd that Pidgeot is the only Pokemon in the game to have a special move that isn't the trainer's ace, but from the game's code it looks to me like they were originally going to give a special move to all 6 of the Champion's Pokemon but changed their mind. One of the biggest upgrades in Pokemon Yellow was custom movesets for every Pokemon, even some regular trainer Pokemon have custom movesets.

I have realized this. I’ve spoken about it in the past before. It is still strange that a mon learns two moves by level up that have the same effect. (Rhydon)

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon: The level up sets in Generation 1 are just notoriously bad and poorly planned out. Having both Tailwhip and Leer could maybe be useful, as there was no move re-learner back then. It could have also been useful for random AI making it more likely to drop the player's defense...that is if it weren't for the only damaging move Rhydon knows while having both Tailwhip and Leer was Fury Attack. Then again, learning a move as bad as Fury at level 40, when it already has the vastly superior horn attack and stomp, is just another example of how poorly planned level sets could be.

Alright I don't have as much time to comment as I'd like and I'm already trying to catch up Spoilers ahead everyone So first not a spoiler, but I find it funny that you mention that pikasprey video since he made one mistake in it (that I'm aware of). Rage does not need to miss 20 consecutive times, even tho rage doesn't use pp anymore it can still gen 1 miss. So you "only" have to grind for 20 of those, which is probably still far worse than just making a new file and grinding back that ape. Now I only wanna talk a little bit about the e4 since for the first two fights I had some trouble understanding your movesets choices, especially looking forward, and honestly thought they were just bad. Third run was clean ofc and there is so much variance more than 1 way will lead to a good result. And obv I can't theorycraft a perfect run in my head. I haven't even used a calc, just pondered with all the damage ranges given by you. All in all I think rock slide is completely unviable for anything past Lorelei but even there it probably is. And blizzard is not worth using for the champ in any scenario. My strat would've been something like: Lorelei - eq bodyslam tbolt mimic/bubble beam Bruno + Agatha - eq bodyslam tbolt ice beam/bubble beam Lance - eq body slam tbolt ibeam/blizzard Champion - eq body slam tbolt blizzard/rest My reasoning isn't very deep I must say, the only reason to keep rockslide past lorelei is agathas golbat which I think isn't worth playing around, and you even have tbolt if it somehow is stronger than bodyslam, which still is a ridiculously good stab move coming of solid attack. Eq is mandatory for agatha but you still want special damage for Brunos Onixes, you just can't take that many hits. And not having body slam is a death sentence since your special is good enough to exploit low spdef on neutral hits. Lance I believe is too trivial to discuss, and probably the best place to use rock slide since Ice moves really aren't the game changer you'd want with Dragonite still being a two hit. (I beam always hitting makes it better than slide imo but what gives, I don't know the important body slam ranges. But generally I think it is not advisable to aim for lots of super effective coverage when you're tight on move slots. Maximizing neutral coverage is better. You're a normal type anyways. I feel like you really overvalued rock slide, generally the tendency to overvalue super effective coverage hasn't completely lost you it seems to me, even tho you now don't get fooled and look for base power of moves more) Eq is pretty great against the champions mag and flareon (so smth both gens right?) Body slam meets damage range for like zam, rest is nice utility and tbolt for gyara in yellow and blastoise is red. (Not gyara, cloystwr my bad) Last topic is that I said ice coverage is really bad for this e4 run, body slam effectively replaces it. You mentioned that it gives you a decent roll to kill on eggy. So that means it's a guaranteed two hit on pidgeot and I don't think a ten percent freeze is valuable against the bird if there's a ten percent miss. On top of needing to hit four when body slam will be at most five turns even if the roll doesn't get hit against eggy. Ice beam is too weak, sad. That's what having bad special does to a fucker mother. Not sure rest has much value in either fight, but neither has blizzard and at least it can be used somewhere. (Not against the turtle tho, hydro strong) Edit: so blizzard or beam would be good for rhydon but I think that mon is bad and you just use eq three times or we. Not worth wasting one whole moveslot for one kill. (Otherwise the fight is so safe that rest is never a necessary option. In that case maybe using blizzard against eggy if the first body slam was weak and the roll is unlikely to get a two hit then yeah using ice moves somewhere else might be fine) No genius commentary today soz, I'd love to have written this comment while watching. Maybe on a rewatch

Have you thought about doing pokemon races between games with different regions? You should play Ruby/Sapphire and Firered/Leafgreen at the same time with the same pokemon and see which region (Hoenn or Kanto) the pokemon would become Champion first in.
