Great review, and I always appreciate your focus on little mechanics that will impose time-pressure (or obligate ongoing time commitment) such as those with building/maintaining the castle. Looks cool! I haven’t enjoyed combat in games like this before, maybe I’ll give this a try!

My reaction when I first heard about this game: *sees the steam tags* "no thanks" My reaction after learning who made the game: added to wishlist

Victor Vran has a lot in common with this as a more conventional ARPG: Each weapon comes with two special abilities and you freely switch between them, with magical spells also filling up two slots.

this one looks interesting, I'm not a big fan of traditional survival games, but it looks like they tweaked the formula enough it might be up my alley

Great video, I always love catching these reviews if I can, and I love your unique take to the review genre - time, not money! That said, I did want to clarify a couple points if you'll allow me. Not to detract from the review of course - I think it's very important that you express your opinion based on the 5 hours you played, and it might help show that some things aren't inherently clear to new players, which is good feedback for the devs too! First, the silver coins. Someone else already mentioned this, but later on, you end up getting a human form, which is how you're able to interact with the merchants and properly use your silver coins. Second, the base pvp. There's an odd server setting that I didn't realize initially - but the server can actually set a time that "Castle PvP" is allowed. Meaning that outside of those hours, you're completely unable to damage another person's castle. Also, as far as castle pvp itself goes, it generally takes a lot of resources to do so. To my understanding thus far, Palisades can be broken with 5 small explosive crates, which early players may struggle to get. But once you get into the stone walls it takes a giant "Siege Golem" which is worth a lot of resources and only lasts a few minutes, if I remember right. Of course, it's perfectly understandable to not want to deal with the chance that your castle gets destroyed/raided while you're offline and it's certainly a pain point for some when it comes to survival pvp. But I think it's important to note that SLS has taken steps to make the chance of actually losing your castle while offline much less likely than most other survival pvp games (to my knowledge)!

Things like the silver coins become important later on, since merchants wont just trade with a vampire would they ;) there's a lot you can do with strangers btw, help with beating bosses(they do scale per players in the area), or use the integrated proximity chat to have some fun etc.

The game is a bit obtuse about stuff, but to interact with merchants for example you need the human disguise ability which comes from a gear level 38 boss.

I would not call that obtuse, it shows an obstacle or feature which we discover later. Just like metroid vanias where you discover somehring you cant break yet and will be able to back track once you unlock a new ability. Same as a high level vampire hunter roaming the starter zone.

I bought it at launch, it didn’t click with me at all, refunded after ~1 hour. Your video’s now kinda making me reconsider :) I was kinda surprised by how flat it fell on me - i like both Battlerite and Valheim a lot.

Like most games like this it takes 2 hours to chew through before it picks up greatly

Between FFXIV and this one there's some strange choices for games that are meant to be played in 5 hours. . .
