We humans are obsessed with speed. We bred the fastest horse when we first started riding. We looked for ways to put insanely powerful engines in our cars when we first started building them. And when we figured out how to build flying machines, we really pushed the envelope. Going fast, however, is not always a matter of sport or pleasure. The need for speed sometimes drives us to design the impossible.
One such example is the chain of events that resulted in the famous SR-71 Blackbird.
When the military U-2 spy planes became vulnerable to Soviet attack in 1960, particularly from surface-to-air missiles, President Eisenhower directed Lockheed to build an aircraft that would fly faster than any aircraft before or since, at greater altitude, and with a minimal radar cross-section
The goal was clear: build the impossible. And do it fast.
No other air breathing aircraft has managed to beat the SR-71's speed record of Mach 3.3 set in 1976 for sustained flight.
It flew from New York to London in just 1 hour 54 Minutes including refueling compared to Concorde's best of 2 hours 52 minutes.
And no other air-breathing aircraft has flown higher since SR71 pilot Robert Helt set the absolute altitude record of 85,069ft.
And the interesting bits don’t end here as this record breaker doesn’t have one dull screw on its body.
So, buckle your seat belts and enjoy the flight!
