So the ending of The Walking Dead gave us the conclusion to a lot of different characters. Of course, not everyone got a conclusion because their stories are gonna continue, but for the ones that didn’t get a spin-off show, I think that Father Gabriel had easily the greatest conclusion to his character arc.

I loved the scene when he opened the gate, it was just the perfect arch for him. Everything came full circle and I think thats the moment he truly and completely forgave himself. It always seemed like he was holding onto that shred of guilt inside himself and risking his own life to open the door was that guilt finally being set free.

I liked how Gabriel kept his faith and still preached despite nearly losing it many times and being scolded and even bullied by everyone for still being religious. “God will save Alexandria because He has given the strength to save it ourselves.” is probably one of the best lines on the show and his best line as a character

Carol and Daryl as well. While the first three go from meek cowards to badasses in their own way, Daryl was always badass but he was a total dick at first, and his time with the group and his brothers tragic death shaped him into one of the most lovable and loyal badasses ever

Gabriel organizing the retreat from the tower and staying behind for a last stand with his shotgun was probably when I truly realised how great he was as a character. I always liked him, but seeing how far he had come made me apreciate him even more. Also it’s clear to me that his role in season 11 was greatly increased with the abscense of basically every big main or supporting character. Which really just made him shine even brighter. Absolutely one of the best characters of the walking dead. Top five for sure

"We've been praying for God to save our town, but he's given us the strength to save it ourselves." Chills-absolute chills every damn time. Gabe was a coward, hated he was a coward, did the wrong things but was able to take ACCOUNTABILITY for those things and did his damnest to prove himself and worked on himself to be a better person. No matter how savagely badass he becomes, he is still so compassionate and has a spark of optimism and hope when others would have none. Plus, as I always say, there is nothing cooler and more badass than a bloodthirsty priest in the apocalypse

Gabriel in the beginning represented the last of the Old World Holdouts, people who thought eventually things would go back to normal on their own and that he didn't need to hurt or kill anything because of it. But I'm glad to see that he got rid of that way of thinking once he encountered the last of Terminus and realized that who he was before the end of the world is dead that he has to be a new man now. Suffice to say, he really became one of my favorite characters in the show

His Character Growth was unexpectedly one of the best of the show had. It was slow yet realistic, it took him along time to get a hold of the apocalypse and change his mindset about. Once a Humble Cowardice Priest turned into a Responsible Survivor in the span of 4 seasons is a brilliant character arc.

Absolutely got chills when he opens the gates for the Commonwealth at the end, a direct connection and a complete 180° from when we first met him. WHAT AN ARC. Glad he got more screen time after Rick left. I love his arc so so much. to me, Gabriel has always been one of the more realistic characters (with Glenn being the most). His actions make sense, he wavers between his beliefs as he sees more about the world. With survival being key, he lies or deceives while maintaining some level of trust just to live on. Naturally a coward, while naturally being strong. and unlike other people where it took like instantly to become ruthless killers, it was only until the final couple seasons where he felt on par with the rest in combat and leadership.

The part where he “sacrifices” himself to save Judith and the rest of the kids in season 10 was probably the best scene in the last few seasons of the show. Great analysis! I remember the exact point that I became a Gabe fan. When he said "God has already saved Alexandria. Because he has given us the power to save it ourselves." That was in 6.09 Now Way Out. His face was full of power and confidence. The coward was gone. After that point I loved him. Yes I wish he had more screentime at different points but it is what it is. It is cool that he got a complete fleshed out arc. Other characters died before their arcs were complete (Noah, Jesus, T dog) or their arcs got rushed in to a hero's death (Merle). I think you should do a character analysis on Hershel next. That would be a great one.

I agree with everything you say on here 💯. I'd like for u to do something on Judith. 1) she looks a lot younger than what she really should be on the show with all the year jumps. RJ is almost as tall as Judith and I think they messed up on getting her age right. She was a baby and a toddler for way too long imo. I'd also like for u to do one on how many years really went by on the show with all the time jumps. Great video as usual.

I think the season was mishandled by the writers and the world building was atrocious. The ending scene where Gabriel opens the gates and only like 20 out of 50k people run in. (They really could've just said the town was only like 5k people or something and it would've made more sense) Also also is that Outlast SFX in the intro?

maybe it's the carl brainrot in me but i do feel like carl is the unsung hero to gabriel's development. he's the one convinced rick and co. save him on the top of the rock, he uncovered gabe's sins carved into the wall, he and michonne in turn open the door for him when he sneaked out and got attacked by the walkers. and when rick dismissed him in every turn when they first arrived in alexandria, it's carl who accepted to train gabe to be fit for the new lifestyle he must adapt. had carl not died, i can see their relationship grow even further, especially after rick "died"

He outright becomes THE leader. Not crossbow boy, not sword lady. He does. Not saying he was leader the whole time, kinda was though. He outright BECOMES THE LEADER. As in the perfect one. I really hope he comes back and lives to the end of the story. I remember watching some episodes back when it first aired. Immediately I knew he was my favorite. He was just WAY too different from the others. I never even made the connection between him and the people who took Beth. Despite them saying it. He looked and acted like a real coward so I never bought it.

I know it’s not really important to the overall story and the bonus episodes are a mixed bag to say the least, but how Gabriel baits and then kills Mays in ‘One More’ is flat out just one of my favourite moments from the show. Couldn’t stand Gabe when he first entered the show but he easily became one of the best characters - and whilst it would’ve been cool to see the brutal tower death (though seriously, we could’ve had that with someone else like Alden or if it was gory enough, a redshirt would’ve been fine) I’m glad he made it to the end with his arc of opening the gates as it rounds him off nicely.
