How Filipinos were manipulated: The state of democracy in the Philippines? | DW Interview

Targeted by the regime of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa recently released a new book, 'How to Stand up to A Dictator.' DW's Janelle Dumalaon asked her about that and democracy in the Philippines.
"If you don't have facts, you can't have truth and without truth, you can't have trust." Without these three, there is no shared reality leaving problems unsolved, the journalist said in the interview.

I feel like there should be a new class introduced into schools, something like responsible use of social media. Or navigating social media. It's an integral part of our society now. We need to teach kids how to use it and navigate it responsibly before they're fully engulfed into a whole new world of algorithms they dont quite understand. If only.

Such a splendid view Maria Ressa has. With a sparkle in her eye, she called this a "time of creative destruction." She sees the present as terribly dangerous time when through social information technology, truth and history are losing ground to both targeted, purposeful disinformation and random lies.
