Better than nothing mate, trust me you don’t wanna be a freaking beginner, but I’d say the difference between beginner and intermediate is easier than the difference between intermediate and advanced so many rules and everything else but above all it pays off so don’t you dare giving up, accept where you are and go straight to the next level, deeply, lovely and patiently.

Surround yourself with English as much as possible. Sounds simple, right? I tried this, and, oh my God, it was so difficult and discouraging in the beginning: I understood almost nothing of what was said. Then, after months of practice and lots of mistakes, I slowly began to understand more and more. It takes time. Don't think that you're stupid or that you're bad with languages if you can't do something right away. Again, It takes time. Try different things and approaches and find what works best for you. Just learn English a bit everyday, try to have fun with it, and you'll surely reach your goals.

Understanding and reading are easy. But to be able to speak at a stretch on the spot as he said "carrying a conversation" is altogether a different skill. That's extremely difficult and only few people have such skills.

@@IntelsCreed Understanding and reading and all other skills are only easy if one spend some time practicing it. That's pretty much what I'd suggest. You need to immerse yourself in your target language, nowadays it's easier since technology and learning/teaching methods have changed for the better. And this guy's right; it takes time, you'll be exposed to frustration, but you need to understand that it's not something you can achieve in one month, everyone is smart enough to attain such a goal if only they're persistent enough and believe in their own potential, so keep working on your goal not hard but smart and you'll make it!!!

To learn english I switched every thing that I could to english. It was hard for me at the begging but after a month I had ease to understand. But my native language is french and that made it easier for sure regarding how the two languages are close. I think it would be way mor difficult and tedious for someone learning from korean or japanese to do it without classes.

my advice is to watch everything on English. Be it movies, simple youtube videos, Tik toks or similar. If u don’t get it right away that’s not bad, just turn on the subtitles in English, which will help. I started the same way until I could just watch movies and series without them and perfectly understand. Also try to talk with native speaker and it also just can be on the phone. I had an English friend with a strong accent, so even though I am advanced in English student, I had difficulties. But with time and more speaking I understood everything perfectly, to the point where she said that she had forgotten, that I am not a native speaker, because in her opinion, I spoke fluently.

I decided to enter an english class, there was I noticed that I don't know nothing about. Now I'm trying to do everything in English, I quitted my job and found a new one where I'm "obligated" to speak in english, I view the movies and the videos in english without subtitles and looking for videos like this, hear music in englis and follow the lyrics, even when nobody is seeing me I try to sing the songs... that's what I do to learn this new language.

The thing that helped me out was traveling to Canada and expose myself to English with no way out other than speaking English. Have an immersive experience improves your progress beyond your expectation, but since that is something that is not possible to everyone, my tip is to expose yourself in another way, like have a conversation with a native through social media, or Cambly or any method available on internet. There is a lot of content in English on KZbin, podcasts, Facebook that you can use to dive right in, but the most important thing is to be consistent. It's crucial to do it EVERYDAY.

I barely speak with people in my native language, despite living among them. I talk mostly online, using English which I picked up playing videogames, listening to music and consuming other media. It got so bad, I'm starting to forget my own language. When I want to express my thoughts, words often come in English first, so I have to basically translate them backwards. It's rather annoying.

Yeah but don't forget that it is perfectly normal to have pauses and thinking on how to articulate something even in your native language (I know this is obvious but I reckon we - language learners often forget about that). I used to put a pressure on me that I should respond immediately like a robot to come off as a fluent speaker. Once I realized that thinking and taking pauses is normal, my communication skills have elevated. Not saying it's not important to master the language but it's beneficial to also have a good attitude not to wait to be confident in speaking until you hit the native level;)

My story with learning English is a bit complicated. However, thanks to that now I can share my advice to you: practise your english regularly, learn new words and try to use them in the context, watch videos, read, speak - good practise is to comment everything you do or talk to yourself whatever you are doing at the moment. Then try to speak with a foreigner or if you don't have such an opportunity, speak with your friends. It is the best way to level up your English :) I had advanced English in high school, I had fantastic grades, but after high school I barely have studied my english so now I am afraid I lowered down from advanced/intermediate to intermediate/begginer and that's a shame for me. But thanks to watching films in english I am able to communicate with erasmus people at least ^^ I think I just need to improve my vocabulary, cause that stops me from expressing my true self.

Tips for beginners: Listen to music (that you LIKE) and look up the lyrics. Then look for translations in your native language or translate the words that you don't know by yourself. It really helps with learning new words because you can sing along and you will automatically remember all the words. Tips for intermediate: Watch interviews of your favourite actors. That way you can listen to different accents. It helps to watch several videos of the same person. Read fanfiction

Well James, you've helped me many times and this one wasn't the exception. Right now I'm studying for IELTS so I'm gonna share my tips with you: 1) Right now I began to learn how to play chess so I'm reading and listening all of my lessons in English (KZbin and PDF mostly). 2) For IELTS I pick a subject that is interesting for me (could be anything), I look for an article or digital newspaper and read it two times. On the first try, I just read for understanding the article and what it is about, and the second one I read the article looking for at least 3 or 5 new words that I have no idea what they mean. So I pick those unknown words and look for their meaning, synonyms and write one or two sentences with the new word. After that, I write a full page on what it's about the article that I've read. 3) The last part is a little more complicated because I don't have any native English speakers around, what I do is using an app on my phone that converts my audio notes into writing notes ("Speechnotes"). So doing this exercise I can have a certain if my pronunciation is good enough. I use some complicated words for this so I can maximize the use of this app. I hope you keep making some advanced classes because we really enjoy your teaching style. See you bro!

It helps a lot so keep doing this kind of videos please. Here goes my tip: it is to try to read at least 10 pages a day of a book you have at home, obviously in English. Try to maintain this habit every day, you will get many new words to include in your speeches. Also avoid using your native tongue in order to master a new skill, as James said, it is a quite good piece of advice.

In my case, English has been a long journey. Like many other people, I started learning Englisg in school, without motivation to learn it haha, I was a child that only wanted the class to be over. When I enter college, I had to present an English exam to know if I needed to take the subject each term, and I have to admit it...I copied to avoid even 1 lesson of the language during my degree. Those 4 years without being in touch with English I thought I was intermediate, and I wrote that on my resume. What a surprise when I was interviewed for a job and I just couldn't answer properly "What is your favorite movie and why?". THAT DAY I decided to start over, I reviewed all the tenses, basic grammar and all from the beginning. Of course I started watching a lot of videos, and a very important tip that they all left me is "LEARN WHILE YOU CONSUME CONTENT YOU'RE INTERESTED IN ". It's amazing how that brought me the motivation I needed to keep going. I didn't stop learning because boredom wasn't part of the journey. When I felt a little bit more confident, I downloaded apps for practicing with other people, and I'm not gonna lie by telling you I wasn't a mess at first hahahah but it's just a matter of practice. That's all. Now I think I'm advanced in listening, writing and reading; and I'm working on my speaking, which I consider intermediate-advanced. If you are reading this line, I hope my story helps you with this beautiful journey that is learning English. You'll see that sooner than you think, you'll improve your level and enjoy all the advantages that English brings with it. DON'T GIVE UP! p.s. Two months ago I got a job where I use English everyday because I could handle a part of the interview in English :D

Well, I am surprisingly advanced. I thing the most impressive mention in this video is that learning another language using English is an olympic level. I can't imagine how would my life look if I was an english (or another extended language) native speaker, but I often don't have any other choice. Duolingo is not translated into Czech (just English courses), there are not so many language courses in Czech (if you learn something else than French, German or Spanish) and my foreign friends don't know Czech, so I commonly use English. And my tip is to speak with yourself in the language you learn. Let's be honest, many people do that.

I think having a conversation with native speakers, or just english speakers in general would help the most. Not only they might use vocabularies that you have never heard before, you can also practice your speaking and listening skills, also grammar patterns and a lot more. @@XnxxD I think it happens with a lot of learning speakers. When you can understand everything but you have a huge lack of practice, you are not use to structure your sentences. And even if you have vocabulary, if you don’t have the structure you can’t use the words. Happened to me until I entered in an english spoken college, and now that I improved my english, I can notice how my friends who never really had everyday social interaction in english are struggling in the structure. I have even a friend who has a better vocabulary and prononciation than me who isn’t as fluent as me cause he structure his sentences like in our native language.
